1 CALL FOR ARTISTS FOR THE DOWNTOWN CIVIC PLAZA LAS CRUCES, NM Benches, Gates for electrical building, Splash pad, Sundial in the new civic plaza, Las Cruces, New Mexico Entry deadline for artists November 20, :00 PM MST PROJECT OVERVIEW The Dona Ana Arts Council is seeking local artists (within a 150 mile radius of Las Cruces) to design one or more of the following: SPLASH PAD BENCH ARTISTIC DESIGN: An artistic design for the finished surface for the four benches applied to the bench concrete surfaces constructed by the Contractor. Each bench is 16 6 long, with two 6 0 long side benches, making each of the decorated surfaces 28 6 long. The Artist shall propose a finish for the benches that must be durable, non-slip when wet, and long lasting. The benches will surround the Splash Pad as shown on Exhibit A-1. This bench project will total in length, with a depth of 18 as shown on Exhibits A-1 and A2 STEEL DOOR ARTISTIC COVERS: Three double gates (Total of 6) for the Electrical Equipment enclosure will be the sizes shown on Exhibit B. Artistic finishes or applied covers will be attached to the steel doors and frames that will be provided and installed by the Contractor. The Artist shall propose a surface finish or 1 2 deep assembly for the door covers that must be durable, and preferably not depending on repainting, and long lasting.

2 SPLASH PAD WATER FEATURE ARTISTIC SURFACE DESIGN: A 24-0 concrete slab with surrounding concrete pavers will be constructed by the Contractor, as will the Splash Pad equipment. The Artist shall propose a surface finish for the concrete that must be durable, non-slip when wet, and long lasting. The slab can be recessed as required to accept the artistic finish. See Exhibit A-1. Pictures of Artwork on other splash pads is shown on the page following Exhibit #A2. ARTISTIC DESIGN FOR SUNDIAL: An 18-0 diameter concrete slab will be constructed by the Contractor to receive the sundial design by the Artist. The Artist shall propose a surface finish or 2 4 deep assembly for the sundial that must be durable, non-slip when wet, and long lasting. The slab can be recessed as required to accept the artistic finish. See details on Exhibit C. The gnomon (upright) will consist of a person standing in the center of the Sundial, with their arm or body casting the shadow. A Sundial expert will be available for consulting on all of the technical and alignment issues for the Sundial. CONSTRUCTION AND INSTALLATION OF THE ARTWORK: Please note your background and ability to construct and install the Artwork you propose. If your submittal is a design only submittal, please so state. The Contractor and Architect will assist, schedule, and coordinate all installation work of the selected Artwork, and the Artist will be consulted during the installation if the Artist is not the installer. If your submission is selected, each Artist will meet with DAAC and the Architect/Contractor Team to discuss their work, the proposed materials, and the cost of execution and installation (if proposed) of each design. REQUIREMENTS: Resume, maximum 2 pages, electronically. 5 digital images of previous work, if available. Rendering of your design concept for one or more of the above mentioned items. A short letter of interest, maximum one page to include: How your work will complement and coordinate with the existing downtown main street environment and structural elements. Applicant s name must appear on all materials submitted. Submittals are to be sent to Admin@daarts.org No entry fee required.

3 ARTIST COMMISSION Each one of the designs Splash Pad Benches (4), Steel Door Artistic Covers (3) on the electrical building, Splash Pad Water Feature, or Sundial - will have a commission of up to $2,500. For the purposes of this submittal, this is the design commission, and final design, production and installation funds will be in addition to the commissions. FUNDING LIMITATIONS: As there is limited funding to design, produce, and install the proposed artwork, DAAC, and Las Cruces Community Partners, reserve the right to limit the eventual production and installation of the Art designs if funding is not sufficient for all of the projects to go forward. In such case, the proposed Art projects will be prioritized, and DAAC and LCCP will proceed with the maximum production and installation as allowed by the available funds. ARTIST SELECTION PROCESS A selection panel made up from members of the Dona Ana Arts Council and the Architect as Technical Advisor to the committee will review artist s applications, submissions and documents, and select up to four artists. Proposals will be viewed on the basis of creativity, artistic merit, functionality for intended purpose, long term maintenance, durability, and public safety. Work deemed unsuitable for public use will not be accepted. How will your work relate to the Architectural and Cultural history of the City of Las Cruces? PROJECT TIMELINE October 29, 2015, 2:00 PM MDT Mandatory pre-submission meeting in the conference room of the Dona Ana Arts Council, 211 North Main St. (second floor of the Rio Grande Theater). November 20, 2015, 5:00 PM MST - Artist deadline for submission. December 4, 2015, 5:00 PM MST Artists selected. February 2, 2016 Artist final design.
