4 WSAA Product Appraisal PA 05/06.8 Georg Fischer Pty Ltd Alprene Compression Fittings 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Georg Fischer - Alprene PP Compression Fittings have Class 16 pressure rating (20ºC), and are product certified for compliance with AS/NZS Alprene compression fittings are designed for jointing PE pipe (AS/NZS 4130) including PE 80 and PE 100. Alprene compression fittings are used for new PE pipe jointing and in repair situations, wet areas or where fusion jointing is not possible. In all sizes of Alprene compression fittings there is no need to disassemble the fitting. After having loosened the nut, the pipe can be introduced directly to the stop (push-fit) and the nut tensioned. Repair couplings do not have a stop and can be slid completely onto the pipe and back over the repair section. The range of Alprene compression fittings includes plain couplings, repair couplings and reducing couplings, tee s, 90 elbows and end caps in many sizes. There are also male and female adaptors with ¾" and 1" BSP threaded outlets. The female threaded outlets have a Grade 430 stainless steel reinforcing ring (see Section 12 Discussion). Sizes suitable for the water industry include; DN s 25, 32, 50, 63, 90 and larger if appropriate. 9 WSAA Product Appraisal PA 05/06.8 Georg Fischer Pty Ltd Alprene Compression Fittings Material identification (abbreviated); Pressure Class (PN); The number of the standard (AS/NZS 4129) and StandardsMark logo. 9 PACKAGING AND DELIVERY Individual Alprene Fittings are packed in transparent protective bags and contained in carton boxes. Each carton or protective package clearly indicates its contents. All fittings are packaged to allow use on site without additional cleaning. Where only one type of product is packaged in a bag or carton box, a label showing the manufacturer identification, the description of the product, a line drawing of the product, the relevant size and the quantity is on each package. 10 WATER AGENCIES EXPERIENCE / FIELD TESTING REPORT PP compression fittings are a mature and widely installed product in the Australian water industry and such fittings are approved by many water agencies simply based on product certification. Water agencies regard these fittings as good substantial products that perform well. 11 PRODUCT WARRANTY The products are covered by the normal commercial and legal requirements of The Trade Practices Act 1974, which covers manufacture to the relevant Standard. 12 DISCUSSION The Grade 430 stainless steel used as the reinforcing ring for the female threaded components is a plain chromium Martensitic stainless steel with nominally 17% Cr and is regarded as having good corrosion resistance. WSAA nominates Grade 316 stainless steel for buried situations to provide a high level of corrosion resistance. Stainless steel Grade 430 will be adequate in most buried situations but agencies should be aware of the ground conditions. GF Fittings with the stainless steel reinforcing ring should be installed in conditions that provide a less aggressive environment. A high resistivity sand or granular embedment is recommended to minimise the likelihood of corrosion. NOTE: A high resistivity material is defined as one that has a resistivity greater than 50 ohm meters when tested in accordance with AS The WSAA Agency Network has not reported any problems with PP compression fittings and these fittings, including Alprene, have a very good reputation for providing trouble free performance. Compression fittings rely on interface pressure being maintained between the elastomeric seal and the PE pipe surface to maintain a sealed connection. Mechanical fittings, including compression fittings are normally used on PE pipe DN 90. Mechanical fittings are also normally used for repairs or changes to the pipeline as the pipe surface preparation requirements are less stringent. Some water agencies consider the smaller PE pipe and compression fittings used for main to meter property services as plumbing products and they are not included in Water Agency infrastructure. Many agencies use minor size PE mains in cull-de-sac installations and find PP compression fittings adequate and fit for purpose. For information on quality polyethylene pipeline design, installation and testing processes refer to the WSAA Polyethylene Pipeline Code - WSA September Issue 1
