6 FAQ s Frequently asked questions about Stone-Coated Steel 1. How long has Stone-Coated Steel roofing been around? Stone-coated steel roofing occurred during World War II when tar and sand were used to cover galvanized steel bunkers. After the war, the practice was commercialized and the first roofs were produced. Stone coated steel roofs have been protecting buildings for close to 50 years, but the product technology today bears little resemblance to early practices due to advances in the chemistry of coatings. 2. Will a Steel roof make my home hot? No. A properly vented steel roof system moves air both between the shingles and the underlying deck as well as moving air from vents under the decking. Heated air is allowed to dissipate through the ridgeline as cooler is drawn through eave vents. Reduced energy bills can result from airflow both under and over the decking. 3. Can you walk on a steel roof? Yes. Some care must be exercised while walking on the roof, but note that roofers walk all over the shingles during the installation process. 4. Is a steel roof noisy in the rain? The Metro roofing system is quiet. The combination of dead air space and the stone coating minimize outside sounds. One rural couple standing directly under a stone coated steel roof observed that they could hear the rain striking a metal building about 50 feet from where they were standing, but couldn t hear any noise from the stone/steel roof directly over their heads. 5. How wind resistant is a steel roof? The Metro roofing system has been proven to resist wind speeds in excess of 120- mph. One homeowner s roof survived tornado force winds completely intact. We lost 12 large trees the shingled roof of our garage a 14 X 14 (2 X 6 ) pump house deck slammed into the house and buckled the brick. You said it would hold up in a tornado. I m writing to tell you it will. Bill Jamieson 6. How do the granules stay bonded to the steel? Specially graded Non-Oiled granite stone chips, produced by ISP Corporation are used for all Metro stone-coated products. The stone granules are embedded in a UV resistant acrylic polymer for a lasting bond to the steel substrate A Industry Street Oceanside CA Toll Free: (866) METRO-4U Tel: (760) Fax: ORDERS (760) Fax: GENERAL ( Will a steel roof rust? The steel substrate is protected from corrosion by layers of metallic and polymer coatings. Metro utilizes an advanced metal composite developed by BIEC International and introduced in 1973 as aluminum-zinc coated steel. The composite improved earlier metallic coatings by applying an aluminum-zinc alloy to the steel in a continuous hot dip process. The aluminum creates an inert barrier coat while enhancing the long-term performance of zinc and its ability to protect breaks in the coating. Galvalume coated steel has repeatedly been shown in industry studies, conducted over the last 20 years, to outperform the corrosion resistance of other coated metals. This is why the Metro roof system is referred to as The final Roofing System, and is backed up with a 50 year limited warranty. METRO FAQ's Page 1 of 2 Iss: REV: 6/3/2006

7 FAQ s Frequently asked questions about Stone-Coated Steel 8. Does the color fade? Though sized more precisely, Metro uses the same stone granules used by asphalt shingle manufacturers for over 50 years, so history demonstrates that fading is not a problem. Over time, a slight change in color may occur due to settling of airborne contaminants, however periodic rain or washing the roof with a garden hose will keep the roof looking new. 9. Is a steel roof fire safe? Steel roofing is classified as a noncombustible roofing material (Class A). In new construction and in many re-roofing applications the metal roofing system is a Class A noncombustible roof assembly. In roof-over applications, where Metro panels are installed over old combustible shakes or shingles, the resulting roof assembly can be classified as A, B, or C depending upon the type of underlayment installed between the old and new roof. There are many examples of the safe fire performance of stone-coated steel roofs in areas subjected to fire storms. Additionally, the lightweight strength of the steel roofing system precludes it from crashing down on occupants exposed to fire within their residence. 10. How long does it take to install a steel roof? Usually only a few days. The complexity of the building s roofscape is the primary factor in determining the time required. Complex roofs require more time than basic designs. 11. What is the installed weight of a steel roof in comparison to other products? PRODUCT WGT. PER SQ. (1-Sq. = 100 Sq.ft) Steel Roofing 125 lbs. Standard (3-Tab) Asphalt Shingles lbs. Wood Shake/Shingle* lbs.* Heavy Weight Laminated Asphalt Shingles lbs. Clay / Concrete Tiles* lbs.* *Note that the weights for cedar, clay and concrete products are all dry weights. All three-product categories weights increase when wet. 12. What does hail do to steel roofs? Metro panels received the highest impact resistance rating from Underwriters Laboratories. Except under the most extreme storms, Metro panels show no visible effects from impacting hail stones. Some insurance carriers extend a discount on premiums to homeowners that have a Metro roof A Industry Street Oceanside CA Toll Free: (866) METRO-4U Tel: (760) Fax: ORDERS (760) Fax: GENERAL ( Are steel roofs more susceptible to lightning strikes? Steel roofing is no more susceptible to lightning than other roofing materials. It has been demonstrated that lightning strikes most frequently the highest points of terrain. Where concerns exist, lightning rods can be installed on roofs that are the highest point of surrounding terrain. Metro Shingle As Easy As It Looks METRO FAQ's Page 2 of 2

22 SMARTBrief T E C H N I C A L B U L L E T I N DATE: Wednesday, March 20, 2005 No: SB TO: Contractors & Distributors Page 1 of 1 FROM: Metro Technical Services Division SUBJECT: REPAIRING MARKED OR SCRATCHED PANELS Scuffed Panels: Periodically it may be necessary to repair small damaged areas of the Metro stonecoated panels or accessories. To repair these areas, has available for purchase, a Touch-Up Kit that consists of the following items: 1-8 oz. Plastic Squeeze Bottle of Metro Basecoat Colored Acrylic 1- Sealed 3 lb. Bag of Metro stone chip 1- Small detail brush The above items are packed in a cardboard box labeled Touch-Up kit. Repair of Scuffed Panels: The surface of the repair should be clean and dry prior to any repair being attempted. To ensure adequate drying of the repair, the ambient temperature should be at least 50-degrees-F and Relative Humidity below 85%. The acrylic basecoat is applied with care to only the scuffed area of the panel being repaired. The wet basecoat coating is then completely covered with Metro stone chip and any excess chip is to be blown off. Larger damaged areas may require a topcoat of clear acrylic over the stone chip of the repair. This clear acrylic coating will ensure the gloss level equals the rest of the panel or panels being repaired. Acrylic clear sprays are commercially available in aerosol cans and can be purchased at most large hardware stores. ( Krylon is a common commercial brand). Repairing panels using the above method will not affect the limited warranty in effect at the time. Warning: For all touch-up repairs use only the Touch-Up kit. Do not use colored spray paint as this fades and leaves a marked area on the roof. Sealants should not be used as a base adhesive for the Metro stone chip A Industry Street Oceanside CA Tel: (760) Fax: (760) SMARTBrief Technical Bulletins are for use by all customers. 23 SMARTBrief T E C H N I C A L B U L L E T I N DATE: Friday, January 2 nd, 2004 No: SB TO: Contractors & Distributors Page 1 of 2 FROM: Metro Technical Services Division SUBJECT: SMART PRACTICES TO SAFEGUARD THE LIFE OF METRO ROOFS Accessory Materials Compatibility Copper, lead, graphite and unprotected steel should not be used in contact with prepainted Galvalume sheet. Water run-off from copper should be avoided. Pre-painted Galvalume sheet should not be used in direct contact with wet and/or weather-treated wood or uncured concrete. Wood retains moisture, and weather treatments contain corrosive chemicals that can shorten the life of a panel in direct contact. Run-off from chemically-treated wood may also cause corrosion. Uncured concrete is highly alkaline and may attack the aluminum-zinc coating. Flashing Due to galvanic action, lead and copper flashing can cause accelerated corrosion of prepainted Galvalume sheet. Lead flashing is incompatible with Galvalume sheet. Copper flashing is incompatible with both galvanized and Galvalume sheet. For metal flashing, the preferred alternatives are bare and pre-painted Galvalume and aluminum sheet. Graphite-free rubber and aluminum factory-made roof penetration flashings, such as those for vent pipes, should be used with pre-painted Galvalume panels. Field Cutting When possible, cutting of sheets at the job site should be minimized by using factorysupplied cut-to-length sheets. If required, using straight blade shears, profile shears, nibblers or hand snips can cut panels. It is important that all jobsite cutting practices give a clean-cut edge without damaging the paint or metal coating. The shear blades should be kept sharp to minimize burrs. Shearing of pre-painted steel sheets should be done with the critical (exposed) surface uppermost so that any small burrs are on the unexposed side. Never perform field cutting over the top of other painted products. Cutting with an abrasive disc or hacksaw or burning through with oxyacetylene or similar torches should be avoided to prevent damage to the paint and metal coating A Industry Street Oceanside CA Tel: (760) Fax: (760) Insulation Fiberglass blanket insulation with a vinyl vapor barrier is generally used on walls and under roofs on buildings with pre-painted Galvalume roofing and siding. Under circumstances in which insulation contacting pre-painted Galvalume panels gets wet, inside-out corrosion can occur on the panels. Insulation not properly tucked in under the roof and at the top of the wall panels can be exposed to condensation and wind-blown rain, causing underside corrosion of the roof panel. Installation practices that allow the insulation to become continually wet simply should be avoided. Fiberglass blanket insulation under Galvalume roofs needs to be installed in SMARTBrief Technical Bulletins are for use by all customers. 24 SMARTBrief T E C H N I C A L B U L L E T I N such a way that all vapor barrier seams are sealed, and punctures, penetrations or holes in the vapor barrier are repaired. Condensation of water vapor on the underside of the roof, along with saturation of the insulation, can cause inside-out corrosion. Certain types of field-applied spray-on insulation contain chemical fire retardants that may be corrosive to Galvalume sheet. Check with insulation manufacturers before using such products. Fasteners Because Galvalume sheet roofing and siding are long-lasting products, it is important that fasteners have a service life equivalent to that of Galvalume panels and accessories. Fastener costs are minimal relative to the overall cost of a building project, so no benefit is gained by using inferior fasteners. The correct selection of a fastener is important for long-term structural performance and aesthetics. A wide range of fasteners is available for use with pre-painted Galvalume sheet. These fasteners are also supplied in various metal to suit the fastening requirements. Fastener materials include carbon steel, 400- and 300- series stainless steel and aluminum. Carbon steel fasteners are available with special heads that include cast zincaluminum, nylon and 300- series stainless capped heads. Fastener manufacturers can also top coat metal fasteners with factory-applied polymer coatings that color-match prepainted Galvalume roof and wall panels. (Note: Carbon steel fasteners are available with electroplated and mechanically-plated zinc and cadmium coatings; however, these coatings typically are too thin (0.5 mil. or less) and not recommended for pre-painted Galvalume sheet.) For all fastening applications, users should be guided by recommendations of the fastener and panel manufacturer. * Zincalume or Galvalume are registered trademarks of BIEC International Inc A Industry Street Oceanside CA Tel: (760) Fax: (760) SMARTBrief Technical Bulletins are for use by all customers. This new panel is virtually identical to the old Roman Tile (PN-# 1110XX), however it incorporates some slight changes that speed up production and enhance transit packaging protection. These changes affect the way the old Roman Bird-Stop (PN-# 3135XX) works with the new Roman Tile. Metro Roman Bird-Stop Changes (Old PN-#3135XX vs. New PN-#3134XX) Metro is now producing a new Roman Bird-Stop (PN-#3134XX) to fit the new Roman Tile. As an interim measure (until we exhaust the inventory of old Roman Bird-Stop) it s critical for installers to check and if necessary perform the following procedures when installing the Roman Bird-Stop. Failure to follow these procedures will result in the Metro Roman Tile panels not aligning correctly with the Roman Bird-Stop. Metro Installer Roman Bird-Stop Correction Steps Verify which type of Roman Bird-Stop you have? Old Roman Bird-Stop is stamped with the words METRO BIRDSTOP. New Roman Bird-Stop has no stamped name markings. The New Roman Bird-Stop (No markings) can be installed by butting each piece across the fascia. However, over time the accumulation of dirt and debris, combined with regular retained moisture and limited sunlight, can create a hospitable location for moss or algae growth. As water runoff from Metro Roofs can be considered potable, it is unreasonable to formulate Metro panel components with sufficiently aggressive algae/moss inhibitors. Additionally, many algaecides, that are used in adequate quantities to prevent Moss or algae growth, also have detrimental effects on plant life located downstream from the roof; i.e. landscaping. Pressure-treated wood using copper oxide treatment used in contact with bare or prepainted Galvalume sheet? Contact with pressure-treated wood or, for that matter, any wet lumber is not recommended for either bare or pre-painted Galvalume sheet. Treated lumber contains chemicals that protect the wood when buried in soils. Direct contact between wet treated lumber and Galvalume sheet creates a corrosion cell and the corrosive chemicals leaching out of from the wood accelerates this process. All rooftop ancillaries, such as air conditioners, should be mounted with factory-made mounting accessories compatible with Galvalume sheet (roof curbs, for example). Some HVAC contractors commonly mount rooftop air conditioners on pressure treated landscape ties. Direct contact of these ties with the Galvalume roof causes corrosion of the aluminum-zinc coating. Even drainage from pressure treated lumber onto Galvalume sheet should be avoided. -Source FAQ s SB Rev Pressure Treated Blue-Wood using BORATE - OK with Galvalume Steel The use of pressure treated Blue-Wood that is referenced as Borate Treated lumber, is acceptable for use with Metro panels and accessories. Borate treated lumber is designed to be used above-grade (Not underground) in weather protected environments and is easily recognized by its industry standard Blue-Tint color. It has become quite common in the construction industry in the S.E. where traditional ACQ (Copper Oxide, Green tint color) treated lumber cannot be used due to its corrosive reaction to the Aluminum-Zinc composition of Galvalume steel and aluminum A Industry Street Oceanside CA Tel: (760) Fax: (760) SMARTBrief Technical Bulletins are for use by all customers. 37 WHY METRO? STEEL STEEL isn't just steel anymore Today, steel is the most recycled product on earth and Metro suppliers use state-of-the-art production facilities to ensure that high quality, long-life steel goes into every roof we sell. METRO Steel We use the performance proven and highly corrosion-resistant AZ-50 hot-dipped Aluminum Zinc alloy coated (top & bottom) steel. This type of coating is traditionally branded as *Galvalume steel, and is specially designed for exterior construction where the best corrosion resistance is demanded. THE Metro difference After our steel supplier applies the AZ-50 coating, Metro Steel undergoes additional treatment, where they apply a proprietary designed primer, on the top-side of the steel coil. It is this unique primer that enhances and promotes long-life adhesion of Metro s specially formulated acrylic polymer basecoat that is applied at our factory during the panels coating process, where finely graded & non-oiled stone-chip is applied to the steel pressings. The result is a long-life roof panel in either Shingle, Shake or Tile designs to suit any architecture, that s warranted for 120-mph winds, Class-4 Hail resistance and for 50-years against corrosion. 100% Clear Acrylic OVER-GLAZE Metro Fine Grade NON-OILED STONE CHIP Metro BASECOAT Acrylic Polymer Metro Special PRIMER AZ-50 *Galvalume Base Steel Approx.26-ga Nominal AZ-50 *Galvalume Back coat Clear or colored 3093 A Industry St., Oceanside CA PH (760) FX (760) The opinions expressed in this paper are based on industry experience, independent testing and analysis by Metro engineers. 38 WHY METRO? STONE CHIP STONE coated steel roofing Has been protecting structures around the world for nearly 50-years. With a heart of steel and a solid coating of stone chip it can withstand virtually whatever nature wants to throw at it. METRO Stone Is specially graded, natural granite in an extremely fine grade, angular faceted chip to increase coating coverage per-square inch. If we can apply more granules per-square inch to each panel, the longer the life the coating will be. THE Metro difference We didn't stop at a fine grade of chip, we pursued experimentation with our supplier to develop an industry first a stone chip that s OIL-FREE. A critical element when using water miscible acrylic-polymer technology. It is this unique OIL-FREE condition of the Metro fine 18-grade stone chip that separates us from the competition and ensures the best adhesion of stone chip coated panels on the market. The result is a long-life roof, in either Shingle, Shake or Tile designs to suit any architecture, that s warranted for 120-mph winds, Class-4 Hail resistance and for 50-years against corrosion. LOCATOR-LIP locking point THE Metro difference We continue to develop new & exciting accessory items to work perfectly with Metro roofs. The result is a long-life roof, in either Shingle, Shake or Tile designs to suit any architecture, that carries a 50-year limited corrosion warranty to protect your investment. The opinions expressed in this paper are based on industry experience, independent testing, and analysis by Metro engineers. 40 WHY METRO? BATTEN-LESS BATTEN-LESS Panels Metro offers its Shake & Tile profiles in an innovative design, allowing them to exceed the wind-uplift strength of panels installed with battens. The uniqueness is in the panels back-flange, angled nose sections and twice as many fasteners in an X pattern as a battened panel. It s these Metro Batten-Less attributes that in December of 2005 during (1) Wind-Uplift testing at UL in Chicago proved that batten-less panels can out-perform Metro s battened systems for uplift resistance. In one test UL s Uplift test chamber was pushed to an all time high of 307-psf uplift force. The test report reads; Prior to and during the attainment of the 307-psf pressure, there was no sign of fastener pull-out or damage to any of the panels. The roofing system did not fail, the maximum capacity of the apparatus was reached. The most stringent wind-uplift region of the US is in Dade County FL and their Product Control Approval known as an NOA defines the Maximum Design Uplift Pressure a product can withstand after applying the standard safety factor of 2 to the tested pressures. (2) psf is Metro s Dade NOA pressure the highest of any stone-coated steel panel on the market today. Its this sort of performance that clearly answers Why Metro? BATTEN-LESS Difference Homeowners receive an immediate benefit by going Batten-Less - making the Metro panels easy to walk on and earthquake strong due to their interlocking design and direct to the roof deck installation. METRO Batten- Less X Pattern The unique double fastening X pattern of fasteners is what allows the Metro Batten-Less panel to be currently, the (3) highest uplift rated stone-coated steel roof panel in the industry. Perfect for the extreme highwind coastal requirements of Florida. X Pattern fastening of Metro Batten-Less panels installed with Ring Shank nails. 2-3/8 X.131 dia. 41 WHY METRO? WIND High Wind Metro roof systems with standard installation are covered under the 120-mph wind warranty. This is enough for most areas of the country but not all. The most stringent uplift pressure for residential roofs is in Dade County FL and is the 150-mph Exp- C, Zone-3 Corner which requires this section of a roof to withstand (1) psf uplift force. Metro Tested to Extremes (2) Wind-Uplift testing at UL in Chicago proved that Metro batten-less panels can out-perform our battened systems for uplift resistance. Its this sort of performance that clearly answers Why Metro? Metro SMART wind Design- To support the Metro team of contractors, we now have two (2) options for permit applications in High Wind areas, commonly referred to as HVHZ areas (High Velocity Hurricane Zone). Copies of the Metro s HVHZ approvals can be found on our website at the following link. ( highwind.html). In both approvals Miami-Dade NOA # and FL # 6710 the contractor can select either a Batten application or a Direct-to-Deck install. For steep pitched roofs the Batten application allows a grid system for the installers to walk on while the Direct-to- Deck batten-less method ensures high-wind security using the double X pattern of fasteners.
