EVERLASTING BEAUTY INSIDE & OUT Durable Split-Rock texture is very forgiving if accidents happen Ideal for use along municipal roadways & parking areas Appearance isn t noticeably affected by minor bumps or vehicle impact Structural integrity of the block is never compromised

KEEP A FEW THINGS IN MIND WHEN DESIGNING

SELECTING THE RIGHT PRODUCT Overall aesthetics Block size & available site access Structural requirements Gravity/Geogrid reinforced handrails, property lines, etc Geometry Are there tight curves?

HOW HIGH & WHAT ARE THE SPACE REQUIRMENTS Gravity Walls Rule of Thumb Max Height = 3 x Block Depth 3x x

PROPERTY LINE HOW HIGH & WHAT ARE THE SPACE REQUIRMENTS Geogrid Walls Rule of Thumb Depth of Geogrid = 70% of wall height Remember Excavation Cannot encroach property line 0.7 x H H

PROPERTY LINE PROPERTY LINE HOW HIGH & WHAT ARE THE SPACE REQUIRMENTS Large Gravity walls maybe the answer to tight property lines

WHAT ABOUT DRAINAGE Majority of wall failures are a direct result of improper drainage

WHAT ABOUT DRAINAGE Internal Drainage To remove hydrostatic pressures from behind the wall Through Wall Face To Catch Basin/Drain

WHAT ABOUT DRAINAGE External Drainage Swales above & below the wall are an effective, low-cost drainage method to divert water away from the wall Clay Swale Concrete Swale

HANDRAILS, FENCES & SAFETY Most Building Codes typically require handrails for wall over 0.6m (2 ) for safety pruposes Large Block Walls Core drill directly into the block Small Block Walls Place in Sonotube behind the wall

HANDRAILS, FENCES & SAFETY Wood privacy fences must be accounted for in the design not after the fact Normally, must be placed behind the wall The foundation must be place during construction

LARGE TREES & PLANTS No way to quantify the effect of trees on the wall wind loading Placement of grid & trees must be planned ahead of time Tree must be staked until root structure develops to stabilize itself Tree should be kept out of the reinforced zone if possible

WHAT ABOUT OTHER STRUCTURES & UTILITES Catch basins Underground services Behind wall Below or in front of wall Keep other structures & utilities out of the reinforced zone Underground Service Catch Basin Underground Service

CASE STUDY: WEST LONDON DYKE REVETMENT Product: DuraHold Manufacturer: Unilock Ltd. Location: London, Ontario Designer: Risi Stone Systems Civil Engineer: Stantec Consulting Eng. Contractor: Ro-Buck Contracting Ltd.

CASE STUDY: WEST LONDON DYKE REVETMENT Proposed wall replaced approximately 300m of the existing dyke along the Thames River in this phase.

CASE STUDY: WEST LONDON DYKE REVETMENT Access to the site was limited & all construction had to be completed from the high side to prevent contamination of the Thames River.

CASE STUDY: WEST LONDON DYKE REVETMENT Coordination of the excavation, block placement, and infill material was crucial due to the limited space.

CASE STUDY: WEST LONDON DYKE REVETMENT A fall arrest system with anchor wires secured to large blocks was utilized due to the height of the wall. The workers then harnessed themselves to the anchor wire, allowing enough range of movement required to construct the wall.

CASE STUDY: WEST LONDON DYKE REVETMENT A reinforced toe wall that was constructed in the 1980s to stabilize the original dyke was used as erosion protection. It was cut to fit the new layout and riprap was placed between it and the DuraHold Wall.

CASE STUDY: WEST LONDON DYKE REVETMENT To allow for the water to exit the infill zone as quickly as possible following a flood event, the wall was backfilled with a 10mm gap-graded drainage layer.

CASE STUDY: WEST LONDON DYKE REVETMENT Drainage tiles were installed at grade, for the 2 year and the 75 year flood events. The drainage tiles outlet through the face at 15m intervals.

CASE STUDY: WEST LONDON DYKE REVETMENT The south end of the wall was terraced to allow for a future pathway to extend under the Queens Ave. bridge.

CASE STUDY: WEST LONDON DYKE REVETMENT The pathway along the Thames River was incorporated into the new layout along the top of the wall.
