7 Geotech With Florida primarily built on limestone, it makes for a prime candidate for unpredictable sinkholes. However, cracks in floors, walls, and pavement; foundation exposure and unusual lawn activity; doors and windows failing to close properly; or cracks in your driveway can all be signs of a sinking foundation here in Florida or elsewhere in the United States. The Right Repair For Your Property Sinkholes can vary in severity and depth, which can influence the type of repair best suited for your property. Helicon s team is licensed and trained to stabilize a wide range of loose foundations. 9 Pre-Construction Process Pre-Construction Drilled Piers New construction underpinning is an increasingly popular method to prevent future foundation problems. By installing a pre-construction pier system prior to laying your foundation, you can ensure that the structure will rest on a solid base. Advantages Versatile - can be installed to support any load Installation is very fast Safely & permanently transfers the weight of a structure onto a solid bedrock Safe to install in environmentally sensative areas Pre-Construction Helical Piers Protect your foundation before the construction of your home or business with helical pier installation. The helical pier foundation can be devised to resist or support any load or application Advantages Can be installed year round Round shaft has a high resistance to bending Galvanized steel resists corrosion for long life Cannot be seen after installation No vibrations to neighbors Can be installed in tight spaces Cost effective

10 PRE-CONSTRUCTION PRE-CONSTRUCTION PIERS TIMBER PILE (WOOD) Pre-Construction Helical Piers DEPTH LIMIT TORQUE LIMITED Subject to soil density NO NO Load is transferred through problematic soils to load bearing strata to achieve proper torque. The piles are easy to handle and are available in multiple lengths. Can be driven in hard soil conditions and to greater depths. Higher load capacity Faster and easier installation, and lower overall cost. Groutable Can be encased in concrete, if required. Greater design flexibility for the engineer. Many design options available. Less impact while driving into the ground minimizing seismic wave activity LOAD MAX (KIPS) ROCK PENETRATING FAST INSTALL HEAVE SUSCEPTIBLE SETTLEMENT SUSCEPTIBLE GALVANIZED >137 kips (2½ O.O) certified YES YES NO NO YES 20 to 100 kips NO Moderate Yes (friction pile) Yes (friction pile) NO AFFECTED BY GROUNDWATER NO Potentially SUBJECT TO COLLAPSE NO NO SUSPECT TO POUNDING 10 PRE-CONSTRUCTION Limitations of Timber Piles Salt water corrosion limits life of piles. Pile Cap installation costs are greatly increased due to deep excavation requirements where sub-soil water level is very low. Low joint strength limits the depth of the timber piles. Lower load-bearing capacity. Timber piles must be cut off below the permanent ground water level to prevent decay. If the water table at a site is at a greater depth, extra cost of excavation needed to provide the pile cap may render the choice uneconomical. Increased safety concerns during installation in filled-in ground.

11 Pre-Construction Drill-In Piers Pre-Construction Bracket This pre-construction bracket can be ordered in several sizes square seats made from ¾ thick steel with four support gussets for added structural support space. The top seat can be ordered with pre-drilled holes for foundation rebar tie-in. Pre-Construction Drill-In Pipe This drill-in pipe is available in either or 3.5 O.D. Schedule 80 P110 grade. The pipe is threaded with a triple-start thread for ease of installation and can be hot- dipped galvanized, when necessary, to ASTM A-153 standards, ensuring decades of rust and corrosion resistance. Geo Drill Starter Bit The drill starter bit used is a sacrificial bit with carbidetipped cutting heads adequately spaced from the tip of the pipe allowing enough space for grouting, if necessary. The drill starter bit is durable enough to drill into competent rock securing the pier directly into the bedrock. This technique is optimal when reaching limestone layers going through to solid bedrock.

Chemical Grouting is the safest and most accurate method of filling sinkhole voids and densifying loose soils that exist within 15 feet of the surface. Compaction & Chemical Grouting

18 18 SOIL STABILIZATION GEOTECH SOIL STABILIZATION Step One: Drilling The TRX1000 surgically drills injection points, spaced ten feet apart, all the way down to the limestone - alternating the pipe-insertion angles from 90-degrees to 75-degrees. Notice the plywood under the wheels to protect your landscaping. Step Two: Grout Preparation A concrete truck - with a protective plastic shield under the wheels - pours grout into the TK40. This state-of-the-art pump pushes a special mixture of sand, cement, and fly ash through a pipeline into areas under your home. 2 HeliconUSA.com Soil Stabilization Compaction Grouting Chemical Grouting Underpinning Injection Piers Helical Piers Pre-Construction Piers Lifting and Leveling

19 Step Three: Grout Pumping and Evaluation A Helicon foreman uses a transit with cards to track the upward movement of the foundation. A pressure gauge is used to carefully monitor underground pressure. Wooden blocks under the pipe protect your property. 3 Step Four: Pipe Extraction Our extractor removes the pipes once the soil zone is remediated and filled. On the surface, our techniques are minimally invasive - and we take extra steps to protect your property. Chemical Grouting The best solution for shallow sinkholes is chemical grouting. It s also a good remedy for problems that occur close to the surface - where compaction grouting is not an option. Underpinning Sometimes foundations shift because the upper level of soil is loose. Underpinning lifts and re-levels homes by driving steel piers into solid bedrock, safely and permanently transferring the foundation s weightload. Compaction Grouting This sinkhole repair method caps and seals the limestone surface, fills voids, and pushes weak soil - compacting and strengthening it.

Chemical Grouting The best solution for shallow sinkhole repairs is chemical grouting. It s a good remedy for problems that occur close to the surface - where compaction grouting is not an option. Injection Piers Injection piers are one of the most stable methods of foundation repair, injecting a low slump, low mobility, aggregate grout solution, through pins, into the ground to fill voids and stabilize the soils in addition to the structural stability of the pier. Underpinning Sometimes foundations shift because the upper level soil is loose. Underpinning lifts and re-levels homes by driving steel piers into solid bedrock, safely and permanently transferring the foundation s weight load. 20 SOIL S TA B IL I Z AT ION Helical Piers Helical Pier installation is ideal for stabilizing existing structures that have been damaged due to settlement. The weight of a structure s load bearing walls is transferred off the weak soils and onto the helical piers. Pre-Construction Piers By installing a deep underpinning foundation system prior to laying your foundation, you can ensure that the structure will rest on a solid base.
