3 1. CLIENT Fire resistance f Blazebrake 201 Sealant Applied t Pipe Penetratins in Cncrete Flrs Ramset Fasteners (Aust) Pty Ltd Marndah Hwy Mrlbark Victria VIC 3138 Australia 2. INTRODUCTION This reprt gives BRANZ s assessment f the fire resistance t AS f cpper and stainless steel pipes in cncrete flrs with Blazebrake 201 sealant. 3. BACKGROUND Specimens f Blazebrake 201 acrylic based fire stpping sealant used t seal pipe penetratins in cncrete flr slabs have been tested in accrdance with AS , in BRANZ fire resistance tests FR 3700 and FP The full scale test FR 3700 incrprated a flr slab measuring 170 mm thick, pilt test FP 3701 incrprated a flr slab measuring 180 mm thick. The pipe specimens tested relevant t this assessment are as fllws. Specimen 1 Fire Resistance Test FP mm thick cncrete slab Cpper pipe nminal 200 mm OD (203 mm OD x 2.2 mm wall thickness) Opening 244 mm internal diameter. Famed plyurethane frmer inserted int annular gap between the pipe and the cncrete slab t prvide a depth f 20 mm, backfilled with Blazebrake 201 sealant flush with the surface f the cncrete slab. Test result: Integrity 120 minutes. Insulatin 9 minutes. Specimen 20 Fire Resistance Test FR mm thick cncrete slab Cpper pipe nminal 80 mm OD (79 mm OD x 1.5 mm wall thickness) Opening 100 mm internal diameter N plyurethane backing strip included Blazebrake 201 sealant applied t the annular gap between the pipe and the cncrete slab depth f 20mm flush with the surface f the slab. Test result: Integrity 248 minutes NF. Insulatin 30 minutes withut radiatin guard and 248 minutes NF with radiatin guard. Reprt Number: FAR 3318 Date f Issue: 10 September 2009 Page 3 f 5 Pages

4 4. DISCUSSION 4.1 Pipe Sizes Specimen 20 (FR 3700) had a half circumference, steel mesh radiatin guard fitted cncentrically arund the pipe where it prtruded frm the cncrete slab measuring 450 mm lng x 240 mm diameter. The tw cncrete slab pipe penetratins tested in FR 3700 and FP 3701 were nminal 200 mm OD and 80 mm OD cpper pipes. It is nw required t prvide ur assessment n the fire resistance f five smaller diameter cpper pipes specifically 20 mm, 25 mm, 32 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm and 65 mm nminal diameter and ne intermediate cpper pipe f 100 mm nminal diameter pipe service penetratins. A single size 200 mm diameter stainless steel grade 316 pipe withut a stated wall thickness is als cnsidered. All pipe services are thrugh a 170 mm thick cncrete slab incrprating the Ramset Blazebrake 201 acrylic sealant system. In FP 3701 the 200 mm diameter cpper pipe with the plyurethane backing strip failed the integrity criteria after 120 minutes, due t a gap develping with visin int the furnace where the seal had receded away frm ne third f the circumference f the pipe. In FR 3700 the 80 mm diameter cpper pipe withut the backing strip did nt fail the integrity criteria fr the 248 minutes f the test. The pipe sealing system cmprising Ramset Blazebrake 201 acrylic sealant fall int tw clear categries with and withut the plyurethane backing strip. Bth tests had a minimum depth f sealant arund the pipe service f 20 mm, hwever the width f sealant varied frm 20.5 mm wide fr the 200 mm diameter pipe t 10.5 mm wide fr the 80 mm diameter pipe. The width f sealant applied t the annular space fr the 80 mm diameter cpper pipe in FP 3701 was 10.5 mm x 20 mm deep withut a plyurethane backing strip. It is therefre expected that the smaller diameter cpper pipe sizes if installed with at least 10 mm wide x 20 mm deep Ramset Blazebrake 201 acrylic sealant t the annular space between the pipe and the pening wuld achieve a similar integrity rating as the 80 mm diameter specimen tested in FR 3700 f 240 minutes. As the nminal 100 mm OD cpper pipe has a higher mass than the nearest equivalent pipe size as tested (nminal 80 mm OD cpper pipe) it shall be installed as per the 200 mm OD cpper pipe cmprising a plyurethane backing strip with Ramset Blazebrake 201 acrylic sealant applied t the annular space f 20 mm wide x 20 mm deep. It is cnsidered that the 100 mm cpper pipe service penetratin wuld achieve an integrity f at least 120 minutes. Stainless steel has a lwer thermal cnductivity than cpper and it is therefre expected that a 200 mm diameter stainless steel grade 316 pipe f cmparable wall thickness t the 200 mm cpper pipe installed and tested as per specimen 1 in FP 3701 wuld achieve a similar integrity rating f 120 minutes. 4.2 RADIATION SHIELD The 80 mm diameter pipe tested in FR 3700 included a half circumference radiatin shield, the insulatin result fr the specimen in questin indicated that if the cpper pipe was fitted with a full circumference radiatin shield it wuld achieve a fur hur insulatin rating. Hwever as the pipe diameter increases there is als a significant increase in the mass f the pipe, and fr the larger diameter pipes a crrespndingly steep increase in the heat cnducted thrugh the pipe and seal t the unexpsed face. 5 the smaller diameter cpper pipes (nminal sizes 20 mm t 65 mm OD) wuld therefre be expected t achieve a similar insulatin rating as the nminal 80 mm OD cpper pipe as tested in FP 3700 if fitted with a radiatin guard f similar dimensins as specified in FP CONCLUSION It is cnsidered that the fire resistance, in accrdance with AS f the nminal 20 mm, 25 mm, 32 mm, 40 mm, 50 mm & 65 mm diameter cpper pipe service penetratins thrugh a 170 mm thick cncrete slab wuld maintain integrity up t and including 240 minutes, if installed as per the nminal 80 mm diameter cpper pipe as tested in FR Pipe installatin wuld include Ramset TM Blazebrake 201 acrylic sealant applied t the annular space between the pipe and the slab flush with the face f the slab t a minimum f 10 mm wide x 20 mm deep. Pipes installed withut a radiatin guard wuld achieve up t 30 minutes insulatin. Where insulatin in excess f 30 minutes is required up t 240 minutes a steel mesh radiatin guard f diameter nminally three times the diameter f the penetratin and at least 450 mm lng must be installed. The nminal 100 mm diameter cpper pipe and the 200 mm diameter grade 316 stainless steel pipe penetratins thrugh a 170 mm thick cncrete slab wuld maintain integrity up t and including 120 minutes if installed as per the nminal 200 mm diameter cpper pipe as tested in FR The pipe installatin wuld include Ramset TM Blazebrake 201 acrylic sealant applied t the annular space between the pipe and the slab flush with the face f the slab t a minimum f 20 mm wide x 20 mm deep n tp f a plyurethane backing strip.
