Quantity Surveyor Throughout your apprenticeship you will learn about the mechanisms that determine the cost and price of a construction project, and how projects can be completed on time, to specification and within budget. This rewarding role sees you engage with all members of the project team to ensure that the budget is LEWIS NORTHCOTT Job Title: Quantity Surveyor Age: 22 Time at SJR: 4 years Study: Wolverhampton Uni I love finance and figures and quickly realised that the construction industry could offer me the perfect job as a Quantity Surveyor. After completing my apprenticeship, I quickly took control of multiple projects with values from 100,000 to 10 million and it was clear that I was an important member of the team from the start You will be involved in all financial aspects of a construction project - from conception through to completion. controlled and the project is profitable. Your apprenticeship will prepare you for a successful career in quantity surveying, with the opportunity for further development through professional organisations such as the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and the Chartered Institute of Building.

DAN OWEN Job Title: Civil Engineer Age: 19 Time at SJR: 2 years Study: National Construction College My Dad has worked at SJ Roberts for over 10 years and I was very keen to follow him and become part of the team. SJ Roberts offered me a civil engineering apprenticeship and I am now in my 2nd year. I split my time between the Bircham Newton Construction College and SJ Roberts sites. I am working on large drainage installations, estate roads and houses and love the variety and type of work I am doing. Civil Engineering As a Civil Engineer you will plan and set up sites, ready for works to commence. Civil engineers are the technical experts behind all the buildings and structures we see around us, so the ideal apprentice is interested in planning and building things. As an SJ Roberts Civil Engineering Apprentice you will be based on site from day one ensuring it is set up and ready for works to commence. This is a vital job, where you will map out exactly where all of the roads, drains and buildings are located. You will be involved in a diverse range of projects taking you throughout the UK to new homes developments, hospitals, holiday parks and beyond.

6 Site Manager This role requires many skills from both a technical, personnel and health and safety perspective. As a Site Manager you could be responsible for a whole site. You will monitor progress, oversee delivery of materials and carry out safety checks and sort out any problems which could hold up work. You will also keep in close contact with members of the site team, and liaise with Architects, Engineers, Surveyors and Planners. You will ensure that work complies with building regulations and health and safety legislation as well as other legal requirements. It is also the site manager s responsibility to keep the client updated and to act as the first point of contact for members of the public. This role requires many skills from both a technical, personnel and health and safety perspective. You will learn all about the construction process from both the college classroom and on site. A huge part of this role is dealing with people and getting the very best out of the site team. You will, in the first instance, work closely with one of our experienced Site Managers who will mentor you through your apprenticeship and help you gain the confidence and skills you need to one day run your own site.

Bricklaying Bricklaying is a great career as where there is a construction site, there is a need for experienced Bricklayers, and it s a job that can take you throughout the UK. Your apprenticeship starts with a good grounding in construction site safety, which will include the most relevant and up to date Health and Safety rules and regulations. ALISTAIR LAIRD Job Title: Bricklayer Age: 24 Time at SJR: 7 years Study: Newtown College I had a great apprenticeship with SJ Roberts and they supported me all the way through from both the practical side of things and the college work. I now work with a gang of Bricklayers, earn good money and really enjoy working outside. Sitting behind a desk just wasn t for me. Perfect for someone who can t face the idea of sitting at a desk all day and enjoys physical work in the great outdoors. You will always work alongside an experienced, skilled colleague to ensure a high quality of work and learn, amongst other things, how to cut and shape bricks to specific shapes to fit properties. Only when you ve proved that you won t be a danger to others and, of course, yourself will you move on to working on site. You will also be returning to the classroom on a regular basis, where you will study towards a formal qualification, while learning more about the theory behind working with brick and blocks.

8 Carpentry The opportunities that come with a carpentry apprenticeship are endless. You can be putting a new roof structure on a house one day and be repairing a century old oak staircase the next. This is a new apprenticeship within the group and one we are really excited to introduce. You will be dedicated to an experienced, qualified Electrician as well as learning within the classroom. Electrical If you enjoy working with timber and want to put your practical skills to good use to make complex timber-based structures, a carpentry apprenticeship could be right for you. The job is varied with our carpenters constructing, fitting or repairing doors, window frames, staircases, floorboards, cupboards, traditional cut roofs, roof trusses and partitions on site. Throughout your training you will learn to plan, diagram, install, repair and test electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment such as switches, relays, and circuit breaker panels. Enjoy working with timber and want to put your practical skills to good use? You will also be involved in constructing our timber framed houses, designed and manufactured by our sister business Lowfield Timber Frames. The skills and qualities needed to be a good carpenter include a careful, methodical and accurate approach; the ability to follow drawings and plans, work well in a team and have a good eye for detail. As a qualified Electrician you will assemble, install, and wire electrical systems that operate heating, lighting, power and air conditioning, for example. The variety of projects you could be involved in is huge and this is a great opportunity to become part of the SJ Roberts team. Learn to plan, diagram, install, repair and test electrical fixtures, apparatus, and control equipment.

The Group comprises the recently established SJ Roberts Homes (2016), SJ Roberts Construction and Lowfield Timber Frames. Steve Roberts started out as a general Builder and Bricklayer in the early 1980s. SJ Roberts Construction was established as a limited company in 1996, when the company also started constructing timber frames.
