3 Stability The product is heat-resistant. It may be processed at temperatures up to 200 C and for brief periods up to 250 C Storage Provided the product is correctly stored and kept in the original sealed package, its shelf life is at least 2 years. Application The penetration of roots into bituminous construction materials can cause leaks, water seepage and corrosion, which can lead to serious damage. It can affect, for example, - flat roof coverings and roofing felts such as for roof greenery and roof gardens - insulating compounds for buildings, pipelines, bridges and hydraulic structures - sealing compounds for drainage and sewerage systems - asphalt surfacings such as for farm tracks, cycle and park paths. The addition of Preventol B 2 during formulation can render such bituminous construction materials root-resistant. Preventol B 2 can also be used in rubber seals. Characteristics of Preventol B 2 - Protects construction materials from undesirable root penetration without damaging plants. - Provides long-term protection. - Remains effective also under harsh weathering conditions. - Is heat-resistant and has a very low vapour pressure. The effectiveness of the active ingredient is virtually unaffected by the high temperatures required to process bitumen and welding roofing felts. - Has good compatibility with most bituminous constrution materials. Preventol B 2 is very economical to use as it develops its root-resistant action at very low concentrations. The amount required depends on the composition of the sealants or insulating compounds to be protected. The thickness in which the sealant or insulating compound is applied also plays a part in determining the amount of Preventol B 2 which should be added. Coats which are thinner than 4 mm require relatively large additions of Preventol B 2 to protect them against root penetration. Soft bituminous compounds require larger additions of Preventol B 2 than hard mixtures. Extenders and diluents also influence the effectiveness of Preventol B 2. The best extenders are those with an acidic, neutral or weakly alkaline reaction. If extenders with a strong alkaline reaction are added to bitumen, the properties data of the bitumen mixtures containing Preventol B 2 may be considerably altered by prolonged heating. It is therefore advisable to carry out preliminary trials. In formulations with a strongly alkaline reaction, e.g. bitumen emulsions, the prolonged effect of alkalinity results in the saponification of Preventol B 2 which thus loses one of its most important properties, namely its slightly solubility in water. It is this property which gives products containing Preventol B 2 3/5

4 their longterm root-resistance, an effect which even frequent or constant contact with water does not reduce. If Preventol B 2 is to be fully effective, it must be evenly distributed in the bitumen or construction material. Preventol B 2 is a liquid and has good solubility in bitumen. It can therefore be evenly distributed in molten bitumen by stirring. Small amounts of Preventol B 2 may also be pre-dissolved in a solvent and then added. In continuous manufacturing processes Preventol B 2 can be added by means of a metering pump. Here too, Preventol B 2 must be effectively mixed with the liquid bitumen or the bituminous construction material. Preventol B 2 has no appreciable microbicidal action and does not, therefore, protect compounds against rot. In addition, it should be noted that it is not possible to achieve resistance to rhizomes with Preventol B 2 Examples of applications Coating compounds and cold-working sealants Putty, tapes and other coating compounds for drainage and sewerage systems can be made root-resistant through the addition of Preventol B 2. Suggested additions Depending on the hardness of the compounds, % Preventol B 2, calculated on the total weight, should be added. Extensive tests and practical experience have shown that the hot processing of coating compounds containing Preventol B 2 does not reduce their root resistance. Even in underground conditions, the root resistance of coating compounds and sealants containing Preventol B 2 remains unimpaired. To ensure that its action is uniform and effective, the product must be evenly distributed in the compounds. Coating compounds and sealants treated properly with Preventol B 2 are root-resistant according to the definition of the Lupin test. For monitoring tests to confirm root resistance, Preventol B 2 can be determined analytically if the testing unit has previously been informed of the concentration of Preventol B 2 used by the sealant manufacturer. Bitumen insulating compounds Pipelines, dykes, bridges and other hydraulic structures can be protected against root penetration by the addition of Preventol B 2. In these cases, high processing temperatures will not cause any appreciable reduction in the effect of the active ingredient. The amount to be added depends on the mechanical strength and thickness of the applied coat. Suggested Dosage % Preventol B 2, calculated on the total weight of the insulating compound, should be added to a coat 3-4 mm thick. If unthinned or high-strength bitumen is used in the coating, % Preventol B 2, calculated on the weight of the bitumen, should be added to a coat at least 2-3 mm thick. Bitumen/sand coatings with a low bitumen content should contain % Preventol B 2, calculated on the bitumen. Roofing felts Roofing felts/polymer bitumen felts can also be protected against root penetration by the addition of Preventol B 2. However, this is only expedient if the total thickness is 3 mm or more. Suggested Dosage % Preventol B 2, calculated on the weight of the bitumen. The dosage depends on the thick and firmness. Roof paints and other bituminous coatings and adhesives should not contain less than 1 % Preventol B 2. 4/5

5 Lightly surfaced roads / dykes Plant growth on lightly surfaced bitumen roads (farm tracks, cycle tracks and park paths) and on dykes can be prevented if the bitumen/sand mixtures used in their construction contain a low proportion of bitumen with sufficient Preventol B 2. Suggested Dosage % Preventol B 2, calculated on the bitumen content. Rubber seals 1-3 parts by weight Preventol B 2 are added to 100 parts by weight rubber.
