3 Honduras Honduras is an impoverished country bordering Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. With more than half the population living beneath the poverty line (the total population is about 9 million), and the world s highest murder rate, Honduras faces many serious barriers to progress. Unemployment, gang violence and a widespread lack of opportunity contribute to the challenging landscape. Malnutrition is rampant in Honduras, and infant and child mortality rates are high. Food For The Poor began serving the poor of Honduras in 1999, shortly after the country was devastated by Hurricane Mitch. The education system in Honduras is very poor, with deteriorated facilities and few educational materials. Consequently, 75 percent of the adults have only a thirdgrade education and only 20 percent finish the sixth grade. Undergraduate studies are attained by barely 5 percent of the total population. Although parents want a better education for their children, survival requires that all of the children work in order to help provide for the family. Tragically, there are some communities in Honduras where up to 90 percent of the population is illiterate. Some communities do not even have a building where the children can attend classes. Instead, they receive instruction under the trees, exposed to the harsh elements of nature. Every child has the right to a formal education, and this should be the first step in lifting these communities out of poverty. School construction is an urgent need for destitute villages throughout Honduras. We hope you will join us as we seek to make education available to impoverished children of Honduras and break the generational cycle of poverty. 1813D Page 3
