2 About Us R. J. Watson, Inc. specializes in the design, manufacture and testing of structural components for the heavy construction and bridge industry. The engineers at R. J. Watson have extensive experience in solving complex problems with their innovative devices and systems. In addition to standard products we are also adroit at developing custom solutions to a variety of difficult challenges. As a result we offer a no cost or obligation design service in order to assist engineers in their overall goals. Innovative Technology Custom Designed Featured Product DISKTR N Bearing System Maintenance Free Low Cost Aesthetically Pleasing Disktron Bearings have seen extensive use on railroad bridges as well as highway bridges. Railroad engineers favor the Disktron Bearing due to the cushioning effect and durability of the polytron rotational element which is designed to handle the excessive live loads typical on railroads. Disktron Bearings meet the extensive requirements of railroad industry guidelines. Polished Stainless Steel SRM Polytron Disc PTFE Polytron Disc By utilizing a polyether urethane disc, the Disktron Bearing accommodates vertical design loads of 10 to 10,000 kips while maintaining its ability to provide rotation in both longitudinal and transverse directions. SRM (Shear Resisting Mechanism) A high strength shear pin transfers horizontal loads from the base plate to the upper bearing plate and isolates shear loads from the Polytron Disc. PTFE The PTFE to stainless steel sliding interface results in a very low coefficient of friction. Polished Stainless Steel Stainless steel with a mirror finish provides a low friction sliding interface for the PTFE.

3 Applications The Columbus Gateway Arch Bridge in Indiana illustrates how an interstate grade crossing can be made into a signature structure. R.J. Watson s engineers worked closely with JMI s (Earth Tech) designers to come up with a cost effective and functional Disktron Bearing design to match this structure s brilliance. Disktron Bearing for the Columbus Gateway Arch Bridge in Indiana. Disktron Bearing manufactured for the Bandra Worli Sealink Bridge in Mumbai, India. Unique anchor design used on the Sound Transit structures in Seattle. Connection details vary based on structure type and owner preference. For suggestions on Disktron connection details contact your R.J. Watson representative. Disktron Bearings on Highway 90 over the Pascagoula River in Mississippi were easily installed by field welding to a steel plate embedded in the concrete beam.

4 Standard Types of Disktron Bearings Fixed Unidirectional Multidirectional Fixed bearings allow rotation in any direction and prevent lateral displacement. Additional Features Available Unidirectional bearings allow rotation in any direction and displacement in a single direction. Multidirectional bearings allow rotation and displacement in any direction. Sliding Isolation Uplift Expansion The EQS Bearing is designed to withstand the forces and displacements incurred during an earthquake. Flexible Guided Uplift Expansion bearings are used in seismic areas, on curved girders and on flood prone structures. High Rotation Flexible Guided Disktron Bearing for curved girder bridges. Disktron Bearings can be designed for extreme rotation conditions exceeding.04 radians.

5 Performance and Testing Rotation Fatigue Test Results NCHRP Report 432 Disc Bearing hysteresis loops for fatigue rotation tests at the 1000 and 5000 cycle mark. Note the difference between the two loops is negligible, indicating reliable and repeatable elastic behavior. Pot Bearing hysteresis loops for the same test. The increased size and shape reflects the significant damage that has occurred to the pot bearing. The Polytron Disc Rotational Element is not confined so it can accommodate large, low load rotations which can be experienced temporarily during erection. Vertical load capacity is up to 10,000 kips Can accommodate all live to dead load ratios Rotation capacity in excess of 0.08 radians Minimum horizontal load capacity is 10% of the vertical load; much higher loads can be accommodated Allowable compressive stress on the Polytron Disc results in a more compact bearing design. Separate sole and masonry plates can be attached to bearing plates by bolted, welded or recessed connections One of the RJ Watson Test Machines is located at the prestigious Multidiscplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER) at the State University of New York at Buffalo. R.J. Watson offers a no cost or obligation custom design service in order to assist engineers in their overall goals. Simply complete the Disktron Design Questionnaire available on our website at to initiate the design process. MDisc Program Contact Us The MDisc program is an interactive, user friendly design program that was developed by the engineers at R.J. Watson. It enables engineers to design Disktron Bearings by inputting loads, displacements and rotations. For information on obtaining MDisc, please contact us. Phone: Fax: Web: sales@rjwatson.com
