2 Located in close proximity to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in south, the 70 acres of park land includes a playground, skate park, picnic shelters, comfort stations, tennis courts, and the historic Sylvan Springs. Originally known as Rock Springs, the park was the site of the first bivouac at Jefferson Barracks. This portion of the Barracks remained largely unused until 1939, when the Sylvan Spring area was improved by the 6th Infantry with stone retaining walls and terraces. The Sylvan Springs property was conveyed to the County from the Federal Government in 1950 and was dedicated on October 23, It was one of the most popular parks for many years as the site for numerous school and corporate picnics. Today it is still enjoyed for its natural beauty and park amenities. Historic spring area which the park gets its name. Open wooded area of the park. Site Observation Summary: Sylvan Springs Park is a wonderful natural environment with several unique built elements. Its status is uncertain due to the fact that the south portion (excluding the Spring) may be turned over to the JB cemetery. Boundaries of the park are difficult to determine due to lack of signage on the south edge of the park. Skate Park area is very sunny and has little protective shade. Spring is a unique feature and should be celebrated and renovated as a destination historic feature. Large American Elm tree, which shades seating area of splash pad, is dying and should be replaced to provide shade in the future. Park contains a significant number of reservable picnic sites which will be removed if a portion of the park is turned over to JB Cemetery. Open ditches in park are difficult to maintain. Ditch north of the center road should be placed underground to reduce maintenance. Parks Master Plan Page 2
