29 Fabrication Methods Fabrication methods used with conventiona materias can aso be used with Dura Profie. The most common form of connections are made by mechanica fasteners. Bonded joints are aso an option and seection of the appropriate method wi depend on the: Distribution of oads within the assembed structure. Necessity to disassembe the structure components at a ater stage. The environmenta conditions during fabrication. The environment in which the assembed structure wi be used. Boted connections Boted connections are the most common method of jointing Dura Profie. Stainess stee (or gavanised) nuts and bots are used, with washers arger than usua to reduce oca compressive stresses. It is good practice for the bot to be a tight fit in the hoe as this substantiay reduces oca stresses. It is aso important that the bot shank ength (un-threaded) is sufficient to avoid threaded sections within the thickness of the joint materias. Typica bot separation distances are: Bot dia x 3 from end of profie/x 2.5 from edge of profie/x 5 bot centre to centre In certain circumstances, fibregass nuts, bots and washers can be specified to suit aggressive environments or for eectrica isoation. Putruded Grating Ony Due to the transverse mechanica properties of Putruded profies, the foowing connections shoud be avoided. Rivets Stainess stee and auminium riveting is a very effective method of joining Dura Profies. Pop-rivets are commony used in conjunction with back washers to hep distribute and minimize oca stresses. The assemby shoud be designed so that the rivets are not in tension. Captive Inserts Captive Inserts are a fast, bind fixing system suitabe for use with a materias. They re of particuar use when there is no reverse access and can be instaed at any stage of fabrication. Screw Connections Sef-tapping screws can be used successfuy in many appications invoving mechanica connections when high-strength fasteners are not required. Sef-tapping screws may aso be used in combination with adhesives. Bonded Joints & Preparation Structura adhesives distribute stress more eveny and are used successfuy to join Dura Profie and for seaing joints and exposed surfaces. Exceptiona bonds can be obtained as ong as the joint is designed to avoid excessive peeing stresses, the surfaces are propery prepared and the correct adhesive is used. Epoxies and toughened acryics are suitabe for use with Dura Profies. Preparation To achieve an optimum bond, the surfaces must be degreased with a suitabe sovent. The bonding areas must be abraded unti the surface goss is removed then ceaned of dust and degreased again. The adhesive shoud be mixed and appied according to the manufacture s recommendations. The bond area shoud be camped or mechanicay fastened to maintain bond pressure and to ensure that there is no movement unti the adhesive has fuy cured. Assemby Methods Amost a assemby methods used for wood, auminium, stee or other materias can be adopted to assembe Dura Profies. The foowing techniques shoud be foowed: Router bits and saw bades shoud be diamond-coated. Carbide tipped dri bits. Speeds shoud take whoe size and thickness into consideration. A medium course grinding whee is preferabe to the finer grades. Lag screws/bots are not recommended for fastening Dura Profie. Punches work better with a sight sheer edge. Sovents, such as methyene choride or acetone shoud be used to prepare surfaces for bonding. It is good practice to sea a exposed edges with a suitabe resin seaant.
