CHALLENGEOVERVIEW Time Limit The team must complete the Presentation (including setup) in eight minutes or less. Team Budget The total value of the materials used may not exceed $150US. Approaching This Challenge This Challenge can be solved on many levels, ranging from the simple to the complex. We recognize that there are many different ways to be creative. Please approach this Challenge in the true spirit of Destination Imagination: try foremost to solve the Challenge. If you find the intent or any of the details of the Challenge unclear, we encourage you to ask for a Clarification. (See the Rules of the Road.) Remember if it doesn t say you can t, then you can. However, if it says you must perform specific requirements, then those requirements have to be met. Team Number Teams and individuals using these Program Materials must hold a Team Number. The Destination Imagination Team Number is a license to compete in sanctioned tournaments and/or to use the Program Materials for educational purposes within your team, school, group, or organization. 3 A: CENTRALCHALLENGE 240 POINTS 1. The Intent of the Challenge: To successfully solve this Challenge, the team must build a Structure made entirely from Wood, Playing Cards, Glue, and/or Adhesive Tape. The team must also design and build a single Removal Device to be used at the tournament to remove pieces of its Structure. The team must show that its Structure can support the weight of the Pressure Board while placed in the Structure Tester. The team will then remove parts of its Structure using the team-created Removal Device, attempting to remove as much as possible (by weight) from the Structure while the Structure continues to support the Pressure Board. Additionally, the team must tell a story about transformation, and it must create a Prop or Set Piece that is transformed after a part or parts are removed during the Presentation. Special Note: Before designing and building Structures, the team should carefully read Section E: Special Procedures for the Structural Challenge. 2. Designing and Building the Structure: a. The team must design and build a Structure made entirely of Wood, Playing Cards, Glue and/or Adhesive Tape (in any combination), that supports the weight of the Pressure Board. The team is encouraged to build and test many structures before they come to the tournament. These tests are best performed using an actual Structure Tester, which may be built using the plans found in the Destination Imagination online Resource Area: DestinationImagination.org. b. The team must design the Structure so it can be placed in the Structure Tester at the tournament for testing. The team must then demonstrate that the Structure can support the Pressure Board. (Section E.2 shows a diagram of a Structure Tester.) c. Team members must do all tooling and/or shaping of the Structure. The team must make any jig they use in the construction of the Structure. A jig is a template or guide that assists in the design and creation of the Structure. 3. Structure Specifications: a. Materials: The Structure must be made entirely of Wood, Playing Cards, Glue, and/or Adhesive Tape (See Special Definitions) in any combination. The team may choose which of these materials it will include in the Structure. b. More than one species of Wood, and more than one type of Playing Cards, Glue, and/or Adhesive Tape may be used. i. Only team-built Laminations (See Special Definition) are allowed; no commercially produced Laminations are permitted. ii. The team must not soak the Structure in anything other than water. If it is soaked in water, the Structure must be dry at Structure Check-In on tournament day. iii. The Structure may be marked with pencil, ink, pen, and/or markers, in any color. iv. Appraisers will inspect the materials used in the Structure during Structure Check-In (See E.1). If necessary, the Appraisers will examine the materials again after the team tests the Structure. DestinationImagination.org 2014 Destination Imagination, Inc. 37

A: CENTRALCHALLENGE 240 POINTS Safety Note: The team must read and follow all instructions and precautions on the labels of any Glue they use. If the team members use Epoxy glue or Super Glues, they must use them in ventilated areas, with a de-bonder close at hand. Team members must be careful not to touch their eyes or anything else if Glue gets on their hands. The team should have adult supervision while using Glue. c. Weight of the Structure: The total weight of the Structure must not exceed 75 grams. d. Height of the Structure: The Structure s height must be at least 12in (30.48cm) and no more than 15in (38.1cm). e. The Structure must be a single unit. Multiple free-standing pieces placed in the Structure Tester will not meet the Challenge requirements. f. The Structure must fit in the Structure Tester. (See E.2) An opening that can easily accept a circular column with an outside diameter of 2in (5.1cm) must run the entire height of the Structure. This is to be sure the Structure will fit easily around the 1in (2.54cm) Safety Pole in the Structure Tester, but not through the hole in the Pressure Board. g. When the Structure sits on the Tester Base, it must fit completely within the Tester Base and around the Safety Pole. h. The only places the Structure may touch the Structure Tester are the top surface of the Tester Base, the bottom surface of the Pressure Board, and the Safety Pole. i. During Structure Check-In, the team will be required to invert its Structure (flip it 180 degrees). The Structure must meet the above requirements before and after it is inverted at Structure Check-In. Wood A natural substance found under the bark of any species of tree. The Wood used in the Structure must be 100% natural. The following are NOT acceptable: cork, man-made substances that simulate natural wood (examples: plywood, commercially available laminates or fiberboard), or are made from wood and any other material (examples: paper, cardboard), and tree-like substances (examples: bamboo, grasses). Playing Cards Any type of preprinted card commercially available in multiple quantities called a deck, typically used in playing a card game. Index cards, cards cut from materials such as poster board, boxes, and the like are not considered to be Playing Cards. Glue Any commercially available adhesive material applied in liquid form capable of creating a permanent bond. For example: two part epoxy, Gorilla Glue, super glue, wood glue, hot glue, glue that uses an accelerant, etc. Adhesive Tape Any of the commercially available varieties of the following combination: a backing material such as paper, plastic film, cloth, or metal foil, coated with a sticky adhesive, used for the purpose of connecting other materials together without the use of heat, water, or any type of accelerant Program Materials Structural Challenge E: Lose To Win

A: CENTRALCHALLENGE 240 POINTS Lamination Gluing or taping layers of Wood and/or Playing Cards together in order to increase strength. 4. Structure Part Removal Procedure: a. After the Presentation time begins, the team will place the Structure over the Safety Pole so that the Structure rests only on the Tester Base. The Structure may touch the Safety Pole. b. The team will place the Pressure Board on top of the Structure, and once all hands are removed from the Structure Tester, Structure, and Pressure Board, the Weight Removal Appraiser will begin the 4-second count. c. In order to earn any points, the Structure must initially support the Pressure Board for 4 seconds, as indicated by the Weight Removal Appraiser. The Pressure Board may not be removed after its initial placement. Any part that either falls off or is taken off the Structure prior to the initial 4-second count being completed will be removed by the team from the Structure testing area and placed in a separate tournament-provided Discard Container. d. The team will then use the Removal Device (see A.6) to remove parts of the Structure, which will be set aside in a tournament-provided Removed Part Container for weighing after the Presentation time ends. The Removed Part Container is a pre-weighed container. After each part, or parts, have been removed, the Structure must continue to support the Pressure Board for 4 seconds once the Removal Device and part(s) have been moved entirely outside the 6in (15.24cm) Safety Line, as indicated by the Weight Removal Appraiser. e. Once the 4-second count has been completed, the removed part(s) that have been moved across the Safety Line may be handled by team members and placed in the Removed Part Container. Only pieces moved across the Safety Line by the Removal Device may be placed in the Removed Part Container. Any part that is not put in the Removed Part Container will not count towards scoring. f. After the 8-minute Presentation time ends, the Weight Removal Appraiser will note the total weight of Structure parts that were removed from the Structure while it continued to support the Pressure Board. This is called the Total Weight Removed (TWR). The weighing of the removed parts is done on a calibrated Challenge Site scale. g. The Weight Removed Ratio (WRR) is the Total Weight Removed in grams divided by the Initial Structure Weight in grams (all measured to the nearest tenth of a gram), rounded to two decimal places. Weight Removed Ratio = Total Weight Removed in grams the Initial Structure Weight in grams For example, if the Total Weight Removed is 24.0 grams and the Initial Structure Weight is 36.0 grams, the Weight Removed Ratio is 0.67 (WRR = = rounded to 0.67). 5. Structure Scoring: It is the intent of the Challenge that the team will create a Structure according to the specifications in A.2 and A.3, and that the team will test the Structure at the tournament during its tournament Presentation time. DestinationImagination.org 2014 Destination Imagination, Inc. 39

A: CENTRALCHALLENGE 240 POINTS a. If the Structure does not meet the specifications in A.2 and A.3, and if the team is unable to bring the Structure into compliance with these specifications, the Structure itself will score a Weight Removed Ratio of zero, and will receive no points for Initial Structure Weight. However, the team may present its solution and earn points for other Challenge requirements. b. Any team that does not make a good faith attempt to present a Structure for testing may earn points for other Challenge requirements, but may not advance to the next level of tournament competition. The Appraisers will make this determination, and their decision is final. c. The team will earn scaled score points (see D.1 & D.2) for the Structure based on two things: i. The Structure with the Lightest Initial Structure Weight that supports the Pressure Board for 4 seconds. In each Challenge Level, the Structure with the Lightest Initial Structure Weight that supports the Pressure Board for 4 seconds will receive 50 points. The score for all other teams in that Level will be based on the percentage of its Initial Structure Weight compared to the Lightest Initial Structure Weight in that Challenge Level. ii. The highest Weight Removed Ratio. In each Challenge Level, the Structure with the highest Weight Removed Ratio will receive 90 points. The score for all other teams in that Level will be based on the percentage of their Weight Removed Ratio compared to the highest Weight Removed Ratio in that Challenge Level. 6. Removal Device a. The team will create a Structure part Removal Device, built from its choice of materials. The team will use this Removal Device to remove parts of the Structure while it is in the Structure Tester supporting the Pressure Board. This Removal Device will enable the team to selectively remove Structure parts during the Presentation. b. There will be a 6in (15.24cm) Safety Line surrounding the Structure Tester (See Figure E.2). Only the Removal Device is allowed inside this Safety Line once part removal has begun. All team members must remain entirely behind the Safety Line. c. The team chooses how to operate the Removal Device. There is no limit to how much of the Structure may be removed in any given removal attempt. d. The Structure part(s) that have been removed and the Removal Device itself must be completely outside the Safety Line for 4 seconds before a removal is considered successful and complete. e. Structure parts dropped inside the Safety Line during part removal may be retrieved using only the Removal Device and placed in the Removed Parts Container. (See E.3 for details). If the Removal Device completely crosses outside the Safety Line, it is considered a Removal Attempt and 4 seconds must pass before another attempt is made. f. Only those part(s) successfully removed from the Structure and set aside in the tournament-provided Removed Parts Container for weighing after the Presentation are included in the Total Weight Removed. g. The team can have only one Removal Device. The team must describe the Removal Device on the Tournament Data Form Program Materials Structural Challenge E: Lose To Win

A: CENTRALCHALLENGE 240 POINTS h. The team will earn points for: i. Creativity of the Removal Device. (D.3.a) ii. Quality and workmanship of the Removal Device. (D.3.b) 7. Story and Prop/Set Piece Transformation a. Your team will create and present an original story describing how something, someone, or someplace is transformed from its beginning appearance to a noticeably different one. i. The story may be set at any time in the past, present, or future, and may be set in any place, real or imagined. ii. The presentation of the story will take place during the 8-minute Presentation time, at the same time as Structure testing. iii. The story should use clear and effective storytelling. This means that the story has a beginning, middle, and an end. The story must be presented in a manner that is easy to follow and understand. b. The team will design a prop or set piece that will be transformed during the Presentation. This means its physical form or appearance will change. For this Challenge, a prop is a portable object, other than a costume, normally used on the set of a play or movie. A set piece is a piece of stage scenery built to stand by itself. i. This transformation will occur after the team removes a part or parts from the prop or set piece during the Presentation. ii. This transformation will result in the prop or set piece appearing visibly different. c. The team will earn points for the creativity of the story. A story is more creative when there is original and novel development of the storyline. (D.4.a) d. The team will earn points for the dramatic effect of the prop or set piece transformation. An effect is more dramatic when it creates a feeling of suspense, mystery, or excitement. (D.4.b) e. The team will earn points for integration of Structure part removal with the story. (D.4.c) 8. Team Identification Sign: The team should provide a free-standing Identification Sign of approximately 2ft x 3ft (0.6m x 0.9m) displaying your team s Team Name, Team Number, School/Organization (if different from Team Name), and Level. The team cannot use the sign as a scoring element. See Team Identification Sign section in Rules of the Road for further information. DestinationImagination.org 2014 Destination Imagination, Inc. 41

B: TEAM CHOICEELEMENTS 60 POINTS In addition to the above requirements, the team must present TWO creations called Team Choice Elements that show off their interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents. The team may create anything they wish for Team Choice Elements including props, music, technical gadgets, costumes, physical actions, etc. 1. The team must present both Team Choice Elements as part of the eight-minute Presentation and each Team Choice Element should have a meaningful connection to the team s Central Challenge solution. Each Team Choice Element must be described briefly on the Tournament Data Form found at the end of this Challenge. 2. A Team Choice Element may not be a specific item that is required in the Central Challenge and is already being evaluated. A Team Choice Element MAY be a single unique PART of a required item, as long as it can be evaluated as a stand-alone item. Both Team Choice Elements may be presented at the same time ONLY IF both can be easily identified and scored separately. Examples of these can be found in Rules of the Road. 3. Each Team Choice Element will be evaluated in three ways: for the creativity and originality of the Team Choice Element, and for the quality, workmanship, or effort that is evident and integration into the Presentation. Evaluation of Team Choice Elements is subjective. C: PRESENTATIONAREA 1. Floor Surface: Destination Imagination strongly suggests that the Presentation Area be a large space with a hard floor such as wood, linoleum, concrete or short-napped carpet. Teams should be prepared to deal with a variety of floor surfaces. 2. Site Size: The minimum dimensions of the Presentation Area will be 16ft x 16ft (4.88m x 4.88m). In most cases, this area will not be marked on the floor. When possible, the tournament may provide a larger Presentation Area. The team may use all of the space available at the site, but the team must be prepared to present in the minimum area specified. The team should keep in mind that the Structure Tester, surrounded by the 6in (15.24cm) Safety Line, will occupy a portion of this area. The team must not move the Structure Tester from its location. 3. Electrical Power: A single 3-prong electrical outlet or extension cord will be provided at the edge of the Presentation Area for the team s use Program Materials Structural Challenge E: Lose To Win

E: SPECIAL PROCEDURES 1. The Structure Check-In Procedure: Prior to the team s Presentation time, at a time designated by the Tournament Director of each tournament, the team will bring its Structure and a completed copy of Page 2 of the Tournament Data Form to the Structure Check-In Area. The purpose of Structure Check-In is to determine whether the Structure meets the Challenge specifications. The Structure Check-In Area may be at a separate location from the Challenge Site. a. The Structure Check-In Appraisers will always avoid touching the Structure. b. The Structure Check-In Appraisers will instruct the team to place its Structure on a calibrated scale. Once the scale reading stabilizes, the Structure Check-In Appraisers will verify that it does not exceed 75 grams, and record the official Structure weight to the nearest tenth of a gram on the Structure Check-In Form. c. Next, the Structure Check-In Appraisers will make sure that the team can legitimately test the Structure using a representation of the Tester Base. A team member must place the Structure on the representation of the Tester Base so that a 2in (5.1cm) outside diameter cylinder easily passes through the Structure, without assistance, in the exact same manner that it will be placed over the 1in (2.54cm) Safety Pole. The Structure must be able to stand on the representation of the Tester Base without team members holding it. The Appraisers will validate that the Structure does not touch the Safety Supports. d. While the Structure rests on the representation of the Tester Base, the Appraisers will measure it. They will verify that the Structure is at least 12in (30.48cm) and not more than 15in (38.1cm) in height. e. Appraisers will then repeat this measurement with the Structure inverted (flipped 180 degrees) and re-verify the Structure height. f. The Check-In Appraisers will make sure that the team constructed the Structure using only Wood, Playing Cards, Glue, and/or Adhesive Tape. The Check-In Appraisers may ask the team questions about construction methods, use of materials, design, etc. in order to gain a better understanding of how the team created the Structure. The Check-In Appraisers will reserve the right to recall the Structure to the Check-In Area after the team s Presentation to verify the materials used. If the Check-In Appraisers want the Structure returned following the Presentation, they will note it on the Structure Check-In Form. g. The Structure Check-In Appraisers will make every effort, within reasonable scheduling constraints, to allow the team time to bring its Structure into compliance with the above specifications. Any team whose Structure does not meet the above specifications will earn no Initial Structure Weight points and a Weight Removed Ratio of zero. However, the team may still present its solution and earn points for other Challenge requirements. h. When Structure Check-In is complete, the team will place its Structure into a team-supplied storage container and the Structure Check-In Appraisers will seal the container. The Structure and the Structure Check-In Form must remain in a designated place in the Structure Check-In Area until approximately 20 minutes before the team s scheduled Presentation time. i. Approximately 20 minutes before the team s scheduled Presentation time, one or more team members must return to the Structure Check-In Area to collect the Structure and carry it to the Prep Area. Team members must not break the seal on the storage container until the Prep Area Appraiser directs the team to do so Program Materials Structural Challenge E: Lose To Win

E: SPECIAL PROCEDURES j. If the team arrives in the Prep Area with a Structure storage container with a broken seal, the team will be required to return to Check-in to have the Structure re-checked. 2. Placement of the Structure in the Structure Tester: During the Presentation, the team will demonstrate the Structure s ability to support the Pressure Board using the Structure Tester. a. After the Presentation time begins, the team will place the Structure around the Safety Pole and on the Tester Base. The team may adjust its Structure on the Tester Base as needed to place the Structure to its satisfaction before initial Pressure Board placement and Structure part removal. b. All team members involved in Structure part removal must wear protective eyewear. The team must not move the Structure Tester from its location. The team must not use the Structure Tester for any purpose other than testing the Structure during the Presentation. 12 E: SPECIAL PROCEDURES 3. Structure Part Removal Specifics: a. Structure Tester: The tournament will provide a Structure Tester shown in Figures A, B, and C and with the dimensions listed in Table One. b. The Pressure Board is the first and only weight the team places upon the Structure. (See Figure B). A Pressure Board typically weighs approximately 10 pounds. If the team wishes to know the specifics of the Structure Tester for its tournament (i.e., the height of the Tester Base, the thickness of the Pressure Board, and/or the actual weight of the Pressure Board), it may contact the Tournament Director. c. One or more team members may touch the Structure while they place the Pressure Board upon the Structure. After the initial placement of the Pressure Board, team members may not touch the Pressure Board, the Structure, or any part of the Structure Tester except through the use of the Removal Device. Safety Notes: There will be no safety shields in place. This is to allow access to all sides of the Structure for part removal. Therefore, the use of protective eyewear is required. Team members must provide their own protective eyewear. Regular eyeglasses do not qualify as protective eyewear. If it is used only for safety, protective eyewear is exempt from cost on the Expense Report form. d. The Structure must support the Pressure Board initially and after each removal of a Structure part(s) for a minimum of 4 seconds, as counted and indicated by the Weight Removal Appraiser, for the removed part(s) to be included in the Structure s Total Weight Removed. The 4-second count for a Structure part(s) that has been removed begins when the Removal Device is pulled out beyond the 6in (15.24cm) Safety Line. The Appraiser s count is final. e. After each Structure part(s) is removed using the Removal Device, and the 4-second count is successfully completed, the removed part or parts are placed inside a tournament-provided preweighed Removed Part Container to be weighed again once the Presentation ends, and included in the Total Weight Removed. f. A Removal Attempt begins when the Removal Device enters the Structure Tester under the control of a team member. g. A Removal Attempt ends when the Removal Device crosses outside of the Safety Line and after the Weight Removal Appraiser signifies the end of the 4-second count. The Removal Device must remain outside the Safety Line until the 4-second count ends. h. During the Removal Attempt, the Removal Device and parts being removed may touch any of the four Safety Supports. i. Structure parts that fall with any portion inside the Structure Tester or Safety Line during part removal may only be removed using the Removal Device during a Removal Attempt. j. If any Structure part falls entirely outside the Safety Line during part removal it may be retrieved and placed in the Removed Part Container any time without using the Removal Device. Only parts that are placed in the Removed Part Container will count toward the Total Weight Removed Program Materials Structural Challenge E: Lose To Win

E: SPECIAL PROCEDURES k. If the 8-minute time limit ends or the Structure fails and a Removal Attempt has just been completed, only parts in the Removed Part Container will be counted toward the Total Weight Removed. The following are some examples of rules E.3.d to E.3.k in different scenarios. i. The team removes a part or parts from the Structure and moves it outside the Safety Line. Once a part is moved outside the Safety Line, the Structure must hold for 4 seconds before another Removal Attempt may begin. The part may be placed on the ground outside the Safety Line so the team can get ready for another Removal Attempt. However, if any part or parts placed on the ground are not in the Removed Part Container when the Structure fails or when time expires they will not count. The Removal Device must remain outside the Safety Line for the entire 4-second count. ii. The team removes multiple parts from the Structure. The team may remove as many parts at one time from the Structure as it wants. However, if there are parts remaining within the Safety Line or Structure Tester once the Removal Device crosses the Safety Line, they cannot be removed or retrieved until the 4-second count has successfully completed. iii. The team removes parts from the Structure and outside the Safety Line and the 4-second count successfully completes just as time expires but a part or parts are being held by the Removal Device and are not in the Removed Part Container. In this case the part or parts will not count because the part or parts are not in the Removed Part Container. iv. The team removes a part or parts from the Structure and places them on the Structure Tester or within the Safety Line for later removal. The team is not required to move all parts outside the Safety Line during each Removal Attempt. However, when the Structure fails or the Presentation time ends any part or parts that are not outside the Safety Line and not in the Removed Part Container will not count. l. The part removal portion for the testing of the Structure will end when any of the following occur: i. The team elects to stop Structure part removal. The team may do this at any time during the 8-minute Presentation. ii. The Pressure Board or the Structure and any parts still attached touch any of the four Safety Supports of the Structure Tester. A Removal Attempt that causes the Pressure Board or the Structure to touch the Safety Supports prior to the completion of the 4-second count will not count towards the Total Weight Removed. If the Weight Removal Appraiser cannot slide a single sheet of paper between the Pressure Board and any Safety Support, this means that the Pressure Board is touching the Safety Supports. iii. The 8-minute time limit ends. Note: The team may use the entire 8-minute Presentation time for Structure part removal, regardless of whether or not it has ended the performance of its story.
