2 The Wood Products Council is a Registered Provider with The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education Systems (AIA/CES), Provider #G516. Credit(s) earned on completion of this course will be reported to AIA CES for AIA members. Certificates of Completion for both AIA members and non-aia members are available upon request. This course is registered with AIA CES for continuing professional education. As such, it does not include content that may be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by the AIA of any material of construction or any method or manner of handling, using, distributing, or dealing in any material or product. Questions related to specific materials, methods, and services will be addressed at the conclusion of this presentation.
3 Course Description As mass timber has become increasingly sought after as a sustainable design solution, a greater understanding of both the material and system designs is required. This session will explore structural design aspects of modern mass timber buildings, including material design processes and resources, connection design and detailing with an emphasis on cost efficiency and constructability, system approaches to accommodating a variety of architectural programs and features, and incorporation of MEP elements in structural details. Southeast mass timber projects designed by the presenter will be discussed as will unique benefits, material sourcing and cost considerations related to the use of mass timber in this region of the country.
4 Learning Objectives 1. Review structural design processes of mass timber products including cross-laminated timber and naillaminated timber. 2. Discuss considerations for determining when mass timber is appropriate, including economics and design and project types. 3. Highlight efficient connection details for mass timber panel-to-panel, panel-to-support and panelto-foundation conditions. 4. Describe recent southeast mass timber projects designed by the presenter.
