Things t Cnsider The drywall is heavy and will require several vlunteers t mve and install it. Ensure all electrical bxes, light fixtures, and detectrs are marked n the flr prir t installing the drywall. Safety Issues Rules fr Utility Knives 1. Keep them sharp. Drywall will dull blades quickly. Change blades ften. 2. Keep them clsed when nt in use. Drywall dust will cllect quickly in the knives making them difficult t clse. 3. Check area arund yu befre cutting. 4. Dn t cut twards yur hand. 5. Wear dust masks and safety gggles when rasping drywall r using the Rtzip. Cmpnents Drywall Stps Hanging Ceilings Hanging Walls Finishing Cleanup Timing & Prerequisites The fllwing city and AWARE insulatin inspectins must be passed befre drywall can be hung: AWARE Air Sealing Inspectin AWARE Insulatin Inspectin City Insulatin Inspectin Thermal Bypass Inspectin The nail pattern f drywall attached t fire-rated walls must be inspected befre it can be finished. Fr mst huses, the drywall phase will be cntracted ut. The Huse/Prject Lead will wrk with the Cnstructin Superintendent t c-rdinate resurcing ptinal activities. A hle must be cut in the first flr sub-flr t lwer the drywall. Safety Issues Dust masks & gggles must be wrn when cutting drywall with a rt-zip. Dust masks shuld be wrn when cutting drywall with a knife. 1. The drywall delivery cmpany will stck drywall in several rms f the huse. The prper number f sheets fr each flr shuld have been placed n that flr. Identify which sheets are 5/8 (fr ceilings and fired-rated walls) and which are ½ thick (fr nn fired-rated walls). 2. If the basement cannt be stcked using the basement stairs, cut a hle in the flr t lwer the drywall. The hle must extend frm the middle f a flr jist t the middle r the next flr jist. The hle must be 4 lng. Cut acrss the width f a sheet f OSB. The hle must be cvered with ¾ OSB when nt in use. Mark the OSB with the wrd HOLE. (Use range spray paint). Fill the hle a ¾ OSB after the drywall is stcked. 3. If the drywall is being installed by vlunteers: Setup a cutting area away frm the installers. Keep this area clear f debris. April 2018 Drywall 20-3

The rms and clsets will get dark as the drywall is installed, lighting will be required. If extensin crds are needed, ensure they are nt laying acrss walkways. Setup several drywall benches fr each crew. Keep them abut 12 frm and directly in frnt f the wall panel being installed r directly under the ceiling panel being installed. Prepare fr Drywall Mark the Interir Electrical Bxes (Vlunteers) Mark the lcatin f these bxes befre the drywall installatin. (See Figure 15.1) Mark the Lcatin f the Wall Studs (Vlunteers) Mark the lcatin f the studs with marking paint, t assist with hanging the drywall. It is best t use a different clr. D nt spray paint n the steps. Figure Electrical bx symbls Mark the Plumbing Pipes (Vlunteers) It is critical t knw where the plumbing is when installing things like twel bars and shelving; therefre, it is imprtant t mark the lcatin f the plumbing befre it is cvered. On the flr next t the pipes, mark the lcatin f the center f the plumbing pipes and what size they are. After the drywall is painted and befre the flring is installed in the bathrm, transfer the marks in the bathrms t the bttm f the walls using a Sharpie. The marks shuld be lw enugh t be cvered by the base bards. April 2018 Drywall 20-4

String Bath Fan Cvers and Laundry Trim Ring T prevent the lss f the bath fan cvers and the trim ring fr the laundry shutff cnnectin bx, stre these items in a secure lcatin such as the tp f the basement shelving. Remve Temprary Safety Lighting All crds and lights which pass thrugh r are attached t the walls and ceilings must be remved and stred befre the drywall cntractrs can begin. Free standing wrk lights can be used t light the main areas. Remve Temprary Handrailing The temprary handrailing and blcking must be remved and stred befre the drywall cntractrs can begin. Additinally, any temprary tables r wrk surfaces which are attached t the wall framing must be remved. Remve Tls & Materials All rms in which drywall will be installed must be cleared f tls and materials befre the drywall cntractrs begin. After remving the tls and materials, sweep the flrs t prvide a clear area fr the cntractrs t wrk. Cutting and Hanging Drywall Installing Drywall Screws Drywall screws must be installed perpendicular t the drywall; nt at an angle. Drywall screws shuld be dimpled; but nt deep enugh t tear the paper. If the paper is trn, install additinal screws. Cutting Drywall Using a drywall tee as a guide, scre the sheet n the frnt, which is the side facing ut. This side is usually white. Snap the sectin t be cut away frm the cut side. Use a utility knife t scre alng the crease n its back side Snap the piece frward fr a clean break. Clean up the cut edge with a dry wall rasp. Mving Drywall When carrying sheets a recmmended methd is t have 2 peple; each 1 ft r mre frm an end-n the same side f the panel with the same hand under the panel. Allw the panel t lean against yur shulders. Making Cut Outs in the Drywall Gggles and a dust mask must be wrn t keep the drywall dust and particles ut f yur eyes and muth. April 2018 Drywall 20-5

After the drywall has been installed, use a rt-zip with a drywall cutting bit t make any cut-uts Insert the bit int the center f the area t be cut ut. Cut t the edge f the bx then hp the bit ver the utside edge. Fllw the uter edge in a cunter-clckwise directin. Apply Drywall in Living Areas Apply Drywall t Ceilings 1. Start with the ceilings. The drywall shuld be in place n the ceiling ver a wall befre applying drywall t the wall. 2. Plan yur wrk: Use 5/8 drywall. Drywall will be installed with its lng edge perpendicular t the trusses r ceiling jists. Stagger jints n adjining rws n different trusses r jists by at least 24. Bards which run parallel t interir walls shuld be 48 wide, if pssible. Bards must span 2 r mre trusses r jists. 3. Start in a rm cntaining a minimal number f sheets stcked in it t minimize carrying f sheets. 4. If yu will be using a drywall lift, set it up. Yu can install the ceilings with a lift r with 5-6 vlunteers and benches. 5. Determine measurements f ceiling area t be cvered and cut a sheet t fit. Cut the sheet ½ smaller than the pening t be cvered. Be sure t use 5/8 drywall t cver trusses. 6. Nte any cut-uts that will be required fr electric bxes, etc. and mark the lcatin f any cut-uts n the drywall. Duble check with the marks n the flr. 7. Mark the tp plate where the trusses r jists crss ver. These marks will be used t align the drywall screws. 8. Set the prepared drywall nt the lift with the uter side facing dwn. 9. Elevate the lift placing the panel int its crrect lcatin. Have several vlunteers guide the panel t prevent it frm getting caught and brken. 10. Attach the drywall t the truss using 1 5/8 drywall screws installed with a drill with a drywall Dimpler bit April 2018 Drywall 20-6

Screw the drywall screws every 12 acrss the width f the sheet int the trusses r ceiling jists. Nte exceptins: Dn t screw drywall t the trusses within 16 f an interir wall. D screw the drywall t the trusses alng the exterir walls. Areas within 12 f cut-uts will be screwed-in after the cut-uts are made. 11. Once enugh screws have been installed t hld the sheet, remve the drywall lift. 12. Draw a pencil line using a tee t dente the lcatins f the trusses / jists. 13. Apply hand pressure t the sheet next t the fastener being driven t hld it tight t the truss. 14. Finish installing the drywall screws except within 12 f any cut uts. 15. Using a rt-zip make any cut-uts. 16. Screw in the remaining drywall screws int the sheet near cut-uts. 17. Succeeding sheets shuld be butted tgether. Apply Drywall t Walls Critical Issues Interir walls f any fire-rated wall assemble (walls which are within 3 f the prperty line) require 5/8 Type-X fire rated drywall. The drywall n fire-rated walls must be attached with screws every 7 vertically up each stud. The drywall n fire-rated walls must be inspected after it has been hung and befre finishing. 1. Plan yur wrk. Use ½ drywall. Exceptins The fllwing require 5/8 Type-X drywall: Fire-Rated wall assemblies Adjining walls in attached garages. Begin installing the drywall with the sheets at the tp f the wall. The sheets will be applied hrizntally. Plan fr drywall seams ver r under windws and drs; they are less nticeable. If the seams are nt ver r under windws and drs, stagger the tp and bttm seams by at least 24. Install drywall n walls where the drywall will be supprted by drywall stps befre the adjining walls. April 2018 Drywall 20-7

Install drywall t lng interir walls f clsets befre the exterir walls. The drywall will nt fit thrugh the dr. 2. Prepare sheets fr tp f wall. 3. Lift the sheets int place. Lift the sheets until they are flush t the ceiling. 4. Drywall ver windws and drs and then cut them ut. 5. Screw int place using 1 ¼ drywall screws installed with a drywall Dimpler bit Starting with the bttm edge, screw 1 screw in each end. Screw 1 screw at the bttm edge int each f the middle studs. Draw a pencil line using a tee t dente the lcatins f the studs. Apply hand pressure t the sheet next t the fastener being driven t hld it tight t the stud. Finish screwing the sheet t the studs with a screw every 12. The best sequence is tp; middle; halfway between the tp and middle; and halfway between the bttm and the middle. D nt place any screws within 12 f any cut-uts. 6. Make any cut-uts using a rt-zip. 7. Insert screws arund the cut-uts. 8. Prepare lwer sheets. 9. Set the sheets in place and use a te-lift t raise them int place. Set ne at each end f the sheet t be lifted. Step n the ft lifter t elevate the sheet int psitin. It shuld be snug against the tp sheet. 10. Screw int place with 1 ¼ drywall screws installed with a drywall Dimpler bit. Marks n the flr and the screws in the tp sheet will help lcate the studs. Fllw the same screw pattern as the tp sheet. 11. Make any cut uts as nted previusly. Check fr markings n the flr. 12. Insert drywall screws near cut-uts Apply Drywall n Inside Crners 1. Bards being supprted by drywall clips will nt be screwed in the crner. 2. D nt angle screws. They will nt recess int the drywall. If the screws d nt recess, tap them in with a hammer. Apply Drywall n Outside Crners 1. Cut the bard flush with the crner. 2. After the bard is hung, use a rasp t ensure the edge is flush with the crner. April 2018 Drywall 20-8

Apply Drywall at Windws and Drs Nte: D nt apply drywall n the framing inside the dr penings unless marked as a pass-thrugh dr. This is the area where the dr jambs will be attached. 1. When preparing the upper sheets make a scre that is even with the tp f the windws r dr n the inside f the sheet. 2. After installing the sheet use the sides f the windws r dr as a guide t cut up t the scre. Use a rt zip r a drywall saw. 3. After cuts have been made n bth sides, lift the panel t be remved. It will bend nicely at the scre. Use a utility knife t trim alng the crease the bend makes. 4. Snap the panel lse. 5. Clean-up the tear if needed with a light rasping. Apply Drywall in Clset Areas 1. Install the ceiling sheet first. 2. Shrt walls can be installed using vertical sheets t reduce cutting; t reduce finishing time; and better use f materials. 3. Refer t previus text fr techniques. Apply Drywall n Edges f Walkway Openings 1. Cut ½ drywall t fit acrss the tp and dwn the sides f the dr frame. 2. Cver the tp first then bth sides; placing screws every 12 nt t clse t the edge. Apply Drywall n the Windw Frames 1. Rip pieces f drywall t fit acrss the tp f the windw frame and dwn the sides. 2. Attach the drywall; placing screw every 12 in a zigzag pattern nt t clse t the edges. Apply Drywall arund Shwer Area 1. Mld resistant drywall must be used in the shwer enclsures. Prepare an Attic Access Cver 1. Cut a piece f 5/8, Type X fire-rated drywall t create the attic access dr. 2. Trim the pening with 3 wide ½ drywall t supprt the attic access dr. 3. Set the cver in place. The drywall cntractr will stmp this at the same time as the ceiling. April 2018 Drywall 20-9

Finish the Drywall (Cntractr) The finishing f the drywall will be cntracted ut. Once all f the drywall is hung, the drywall cntractr will take ver. They will install the crner bead, mud and tape the jints, mud the nail hles, stmp the ceiling, and sand the walls. Prepare fr the Finishers 1. Remve all full r half sheets f drywall frm the huse. 2. Thrw any ther cut pieces f drywall in the dumpster. 3. Sweep ut the dust and trash 4. Perfrm the Quality assurance checklist with a special emphasis n: Inspecting all jints t ensure they are secure. Inspecting screws t ensure they are recessed. Inspecting utside crners t ensure they are rasped smth. Cleanup after the Finishers (Vlunteers) 1. Using a utility knife, remve drywall mud frm inside f utlet bxes. Be sure t cut arund the inside edges f the bx t prevent breaking the drywall jint utside the bx. 2. Using a shp-vac with a drywall dust filter, vacuum all f the flrs, windw sills, utlet bxes, bathtub, and any ther edges where dust has cllected. April 2018 Drywall 20-10

Quality Assurance Checklist Run a metal putty knife ver each screw head they shuld be deep enugh s that n ting sund is heard. Screws can be set deeper using a Phillips head screw driver. Any screws that missed the studs shuld be remved. Verify all utside crners have been rasped flush. Verify the paper was nt brken. Verify any cut-uts were made. Match the hles t the marks n the flr. Verify all electrical utlets have been cut ut. Are all f the drywall screws recessed Are all f the drywall sheets anchred tightly Are there any nail pps Are all f the seams and screw hles finished Are all f the electrical bxes cut ut April 2018 Drywall 20-11
