Sometimes a simple adjustment to an existing home is enough to make a substantial impact on heating and cooling costs, as owners of a 2,650-square-foot colonial home in Uniontown, Ohio, learned. Built in 1983, the home was insulated with R-19 blown-in cellulose in the attic, but featured no insulation or air sealing in the rim joists. While the home may have seemed well-sealed, a blower door test, which measures air infiltration into a home, showed that there was some room for improvement. An initial reading of 7.7 ACH50, or air change per hour, was higher than the 5.4 ACH50 minimum ventilation requirements for the house, prompting the owners to seek a way to make their home more impervious to outside weather fluctuations. Comfort RX contractors were able to mitigate a significant amount of air leakage by utilizing the Handi- Foam System 8 refillable system to apply two inches of low pressure spray polyurethane foam (SPF) in the home s basement rim joists and by securing a critical seal in the attic. The difference was clear when a follow-up blower door test was performed; a new rating of 6.2 ACH50 unveiled a 19.5 percent decrease in air leakage in the home. "As energy costs got higher, we became more and more concerned with the efficiency of our home, the satisfied homeowner stated. Our Comfort RX contractor came and was able to identify where our home s efficiencies could be improved. We ve found that we re now using less energy and seeing a big decrease in our utility bills."

Such was the objective of the owners of a 2,400-square-foot, tri-level home in Denver, Colo. Built in 1977 and insulated with mineral wool in the attic, the house was lacking insulation throughout the home, with no insulation in the rim joists or cantilevered floors. When a blower door test was conducted, this lack of an air seal became apparent the house was shown to have a 10.7 ACH50 rating, an industry-standard measure of air changes per hour at a pressure differential of 50 pascals between the pressure inside and outside of the home, which demonstrated a much higher level of air leakage than the 5.3 ACH50 minimum ventilation requirement. To address the air infiltration problem, Comfort RX contractors used the Handi-Foam System 8 refillable system to apply a two-inch thick coating of low pressure spray polyurethane foam (SPF) in the rim joists and cantilevered floors and added fiberglass above the rim joists and in the cantilevered floors. They also applied a critical seal in the attic with sealing all joints and penetrations with one inch of Handi-Foam and blowing cellulose over the critical seal, to bring the house to meet building codes. Additionally, the contractors installed new airtight recessed lighting throughout the home. The difference was immediately clear, according to the homeowners. "We noticed right away that our air conditioner was not cycling on nearly as much, and the house was much more comfortable overall." The decrease in air leakage was evident after a final blower test, as well; a 6.7 ACH50 rating marked a 37 percent reduction in air leakage per hour. This was accomplished using approximately 600 board feet of Handi-Foam SPF.

5 For more information, please contact: Amber Davis OR Kristen Lewis AKHIA Comfort RX Comfort RX Case Studies Madison, Connecticut As the cost of energy has risen over the past decade and energy-efficiency awareness is on the rise, many homeowners have begun seeking methods of saving money on the heating and cooling of their homes. This was the case for the owners of a 2,100-square-foot garrison colonial-style home in Madison, Conn. Built in 1972 and insulated with fiberglass in the walls, attic, rim joists and cantilevered floors, the home seemed well insulated initially. After a blower door test to measure the level of air infiltration into the home, however, it became clear that this was not the case. The minimum ventilation requirements for the house were 3.7 ACH50, an industry-standard measure of air change per hour at a pressure differential of 50 pascals between the pressure inside and outside of the home. The blower door test revealed the house to have a 9.2 ACH50 rating, showing room for improvement and significantly higher air leakage than preferred. Comfort RX contractors addressed this issue by using the Handi-Foam System 8 refillable system and applying a two-inch layer of low pressure spray polyurethane foam (SPF) to basement rim joists and cantilevered floors, as well as a twoinch layer to the entire attic floor. Cellulose was also blown into the attic for the house to meet the R- values required in the building code effectively and inexpensively. A post-application blower door test showed a significant improvement to the home s air sealing; the home now boasts a 5.7 ACH50 rating a 38 percent reduction in air infiltration. The effect of the application of low pressure SPF to the home is noticeable without testing equipment, as well. After the air seal was done, our house seemed a lot quieter and more structurally sound, the homeowner said.

7 For more information, please contact: Amber Davis OR Kristen Lewis AKHIA Comfort RX Comfort RX Case Studies Hartville, Ohio While it is often assumed that a home that features insulation in walls has been appropriately weatherized, it remains possible for a substantial amount of outside air to infiltrate and warm or chill a home. This is what the owners of a 2,100-square-foot, four-level home in Hartville, Ohio, learned as they researched ways to fix their home s draftiness. Built in 1970 and insulated with fiberglass in the walls and the attic, the house lacked insulation in rim joists and its cantilevered floors. A blower door test, a diagnostic tool that measures air infiltration and exfiltration, confirmed the homeowner s suspicions, the air change per hour (ACH50) rating of 10.4 showed almost double the air leakage of the minimum ventilation requirement for the house of 5.4 ACH50. Comfort RX contractors used the Handi-Foam System 8 refillable system to apply low pressure spray polyurethane foam (SPF) to address the air infiltration problem, applying two inches in the basement rim joists and cantilevered floors. These simple home improvements were enough to yield impressive results: a final blower test showed a 6.6 ACH50 rating, which signified a 37 percent reduction in air leakage per hour in the house. This was accomplished by using just 400 board feet of Handi-Foam SPF. The homeowners immediately noticed the difference, too. "After the Comfort RX contractor came through and air sealed a few spots in our home, the homeowners said, we could really feel a difference with less drafts and less cold spots in the floor."
