5 GENERAL SPECIFICATION : ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION 1. Extent of Contract The works to be executed under this Contract comprise the supply, erection, installation, and connecting up in accordance with the schedule, plans and drawings, of all materials necessary for a complete installation for electric light and power from the supply cut-out to the lamp holders, socket outlets, ceiling fans and cooker control units. All works shall be carried out in accordance with :- a) The Electricity Rules 1949, b) The Electricity Regulations, 1951, c) The latest edition of I.E.E. Regulations for the Electrical Equipment of Buildings, d) The Regulation issued by LLN or SESCo and Ketua Pemeriksa Letrik. The successful Contractor shall be responsible for preparing of all drawings and to obtain the approval of the relevant authorities before commencement of works. The Contractor shall maintain and keep the whole of the works in perfect repair for six calendar months after the Engineer has certified their completion and should any defects appear in the works within six months, the Contractor shall on demand at his own cost amend and make good the same as the Engineer may direct. In case the Contractor shall neglect or fail for seven days after notice to do so, amend or make good such defects, the Employer may perfect the same and whatever expenses may be incurred by the Employer in so doing, shall be refunded to the Employer by the Contractor. 2. Cutting Away, Making Good and Painting The Contractor shall allow for all necessary cutting away and making good complete with painting and colour washing. All new cables, wood battens and casings shall be painted to match the surrounding colour scheme. The making good and painting shall be carried out by skilled tradesman to the satisfaction of the Engineer or his Representative. 3. Faults and Defects All faults and defects arising within a period of six months through bad workmanship or inferior materials shall be made good or replaced by and at the expense of the Contractor. 4. Materials All materials used for the work under this Contract shall conform to SIRIM standard. The tender shall include the manufacturer s name of the undermentioned items. Drawings The drawings indicate generally the arrangement of the installation and are for assistance shown thereon are approximately only. Exact position will be indicated in site by the Engineer or his Representative. 6. Time of Completion The time of completion shall be stated. Penalty clause shall be invoked should the time of completion be exceeded. 60

6 7. System of Wiring i) Surface & Conduit All wiring to be fixed on walls, ceilings, posts etc. shall be run in the approved standard PVC wiring conduit of appropriate size. The wiring above ceiling (roof space) shall be run in 1/2 and 3/4 Class C PVC pipe and properly laid without intersecting the other unit line. The wiring shall be carried out with black PVC insulated PVC sheathed copper cables of 600/1000 volts grade manufactured to B.S. 6044/1969. The cables shall run on the surface of the wall and ceiling and where specified, in the roof spaces. The cables shall be secured by approved buckle clips or lead alloy saddle or approved design. For wiring on plaster brickwork or on metal surface, the cables shall be run on hardwood battens. Buckles clips shall be fixed by brass nails or screws. ii) Conceal The wiring shall be carried out with PVC insulated PVC sheathed copper cables of 600/1000 volts to B.S. 6044/1969 and concealed behind the plastering of walls and ceiling or in the roof spaces. The Contractor shall cut chase on the concrete and/or brick walls and ceilings to accommodate the runs of cables. The building contractor shall carry the final rendering and plastering. Cables shall not be taken diagonally across the walls. All circular or rectangular blocks shall be fitted flush with the walls or ceilings. All timber switches and sockets shall be of flush pattern. 8. Arrangement of Conductors The wiring throughout shall be on the looping in system and no tee or other joints be used. No reduction of the strands forming the conductor will be allowed at switches or other terminals, but all the strands shall be effectively secured by screw, nuts and washers or other approved means. 9. Arrangement of Circuit Each lighting sub-circuit shall be fused at the sub-distribution board only and unless otherwise specified, the loading shall in no case exceeds 1,000 volts nor have more than ten points connected to it. The following cables sizes shall be used for the various circuits :- Lighting circuits mm² 13 Amps Socket Power Circuits mm² Air-Conditioner mm² Water Heater Circuits mm² Cooker Circuits mm² 10. Method of Fixing Hardwood battens, wood blocks, wood distribution boards and other wiring accessories shall be fixed to brickwork, concrete, etc. with screw and raw plugs. Metal-clad switches and fuse gears shall be fixed with rag bolts or other approved means. Ceiling fan hooks where secured to wood works shall comprise a mild steel hook or U bracket not less than 3/8 diameter fixed to substantial hardwood beam with one nuts, lock nut and split pin. 11. Height of Fixing Unless otherwise specified :- a) Pendant light shall be suspended at a height of 8 min. from lamp to floor level. b) Bracket light shall be fixed at a height of 6 9 from lamp to floor level. c) Tumbler switches shall be fixed at a height of 4 9 above floor level. d) Socket outlets for general purposes shall be fixed at a height of 4 9 above the floor level 61

7 12. Lighting Points All lighting points shall have an earthed terminal at the ceiling roses in accordance with Section D-6 of the I.E.E. Regulations. All lighting points shall be provided with a white plastic shade and a 60 watts lamp unless otherwise specified. All switches used shall be of MK or other approved make Amps Socket Outlets One 5 Amps socket outlet only maybe connected to a 5 Amps circuit and two to a 10 Amps circuit but it is not permissible to connect three 5 Amps socket outlet to 15 Amps circuit. 14. Power Point All 13 Amps power sockets shall be installed in accordance to Section A-30 of the I.E.E. Regulations. All switch socket outlets shall be of MK make or approved equivalent. 15. Cookers The 30 Amps cooker control unit shall be installed next to the cooker. The cooker circuit shall be connected to 30 Amps way of the distribution fuse board. 16. Water Heater The water heater circuit shall be install to a 20 Amps way of the distribution fuse board. The water heater circuit shall be terminated in a 3-plate ceiling rose adjacent to the water heater and out of reach of normal person standing in the bath. Only the heater is to be wired off a final sub-circuit. 17. Air Conditioner Room air conditioner points shall be permanently connected to a 20 Amps way at the distribution fuse board. An isolator and push button starter with no-volt release shall be installed adjacent to the air conditioner. 18. Distribution Fuse Boards Distribution fuse board shall be in accordance with B.S. 214 and for single-phase distribution shall be equipped with single pole fuses and a neutral bar. The neutral bar shall have the same number of terminals as there are fuse ways. Ease of access for wiring of terminals and renewal of fuses shall be provided. In wood cases, the clearance between the live metal and the case shall be sufficient to prevent risk of fire. 19. Woodwork Wood battens and casings shall be of approved hardwood, smooth finished and free from defects. Wood battens shall be 3/16 and not wider than is necessary to accommodate the number of cables to be carried. 20. Earthing and Bonding i) Earth Continuity Conductors The earth connection of all the three pin sockets and the non-current carrying metal parts of the switch gears, motors, current consuming apparatus and all the metal conduits shall be effectively earthed by means of a conductor of sufficient size but in any case not less than 2.5 mm² green PVC copper 62

8 conductor properly connected as specified in table D2M of I.E.E. Regulations. Where the connection is made at motor, switch gears etc., the earth continuity conductor shall terminate in a sweated cable socket or other approved means. The earth continuity conductor shall be protected from mechanical damage throughout its length. Before connecting the earthing conductor, the metal work at the point of electrical contact, including the clamp shall be thoroughly cleaned of paint or surface corrosion to ensure that good electrical contact is made. ii) Earth Electrode The earth electrode shall comprise an approved proprietary earth rod or alternatively a galvanised iron pipe not less than 2 diameter and 8 long. iii) Protection of Earth Electrode To protect it from mechanical damage and to provide a means of ready inspection and testing, the upper part of the buried electrode shall be encased within a brick or concrete chamber with a removable cover. iv) Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) Where a single phase ELCB is to be installed it shall be of Crabtree make or other approved similar type and shall be wired after the consumer s main switch fuse. The trip coil shall be connected by an insulated 2.5 mm² green cable to an auxiliary electrode which shall not be less than 6 away from the main electrode of the installation or any buried water piping. If the fitting of an auxiliary electrode causes the ELCB to become inoperative due to the influence of local ground conditions, then this electrode may be omitted and the trip coil connected direct to the main electrode of the installation. Where there is water heater in the installation, a current operated ELCB shall be installed. In the case where a metal-clad board is used, the ELCB shall be wired before the consumer s main switch fuse. 21. Test at Site On completion, the Contractor shall carry out the tests as prescribe under Rule 22 of the Electricity (Board Supplies) Rule, 1949 and submit test results. In the event of the installation failing to pass any or all the test, the Contractor shall take such remedial measure to correct the defects. 22. Labeling Label of approved design shall be fixed on all main switches and fuse boards denoting various circuit controlled. Each fuse board shall be provided with a white card fixed inside the cover with particulars of the circuits controlled by each fuse. The Contractor shall fix to the main switch board a rust proof metal label baring the following :- a) Name of the Contractor b) Address and telephone number c) Date of completion of either a new or rewired installation. 23. Installation Diagram On completion, the Contractor shall prepare an as fitted single line schematic diagram showing the arrangement of the main switch gear, etc. The approved diagram shall be fixed in the substantial glazed hardwood or approved metal frame and mounted adjacent to the intake switch gear. 63
