Pile Driving: At the Contractor s expense, the Contractor shall repair any damage to the levee including but not limited to cracks and changes in the levee crest elevation and/or levee cross section as a result of pile driving as determined by the Engineer. Submit repair methods to the Engineer for approval prior to the start of any repair work DEFINITIONS A. Steel Sheet Pile Measurement: Vertical measurement for payment will be from sheet pile head cutoff elevation to sheet pile tip elevation. Horizontal measurement for payment will be the horizontal distance in feet covered by the piling, not including the indentations, as measured along the centerline axis of the sheet pile wall as shown N-10

4 PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 MATERIALS A. Steel Materials: 1. Sheet pile sections shall maintain the following properties: a. All sheet piles shall be structural steel conforming to ASTM A 572, Grade 50. b. All sheet piles shall be a hot-rolled Z-shaped section. c. Pile size and placement shall be as shown. 2. New interlocking sheet pile sections shall be used. All sheet pile sections furnished shall be straight and undamaged, clean, and free of potential groundwater contaminants. 3. All sheet piles shall be subjected to inspection and approval by the Engineer WORKMANSHIP A. Workmanship shall conform to Section Materials and Workmanship and Section Miscellaneous Metalwork COATINGS A. The top 10 feet of the sheet piles, water and land sides, shall be coated as specified in Section Coatings EQUIPMENT A. Pile Driver: 1. Sheet piles shall be driven with non-impact, vibratory hammers, or press-in equipment. 2. Pile driving equipment shall be sized such that the sheet piles can be driven with reasonable effort to the lengths required without damage N-10

5 PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. After sheet pile lengths are verified, deliver materials to work site in such quantities and at such times to ensure continuity of pile driving operations and adherence to project schedule. B. Store sheet piles in orderly groups above ground and blocked to prevent distortion of members PRELIMINARY WORK A. Pile Length Markings: Mark each sheet pile length with horizontal lines at 5 foot intervals from the tip PILE CAPACITY A. Sheet piles shall be driven with approved driving equipment to the tip elevations as shown DRIVING A. General: 1. Furnish three sheet pile segments or 100 feet of spare sheet pile length, whichever is longer. Spare piling shall be in the possession of Contractor and readily available during driving operations. 2. The heads of all sheet piles shall be plane and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the sheet pile before the helmet is attached. 3. Approval of pile driving equipment relative to driving stress damage shall not relieve Contractor of the responsibility for sheet piles damaged because of misalignment of the leads, failure of cushion materials, failure of splices, malfunction of the pile hammer, or other improper construction methods. Sheet piles damaged for such reasons shall be replaced at Contractor s expense when the Engineer determines that the damage impairs the strength of the sheet pile. 4. Driving stresses in the sheet piles shall not exceed 90 percent of the minimum yield stress of the steel sheet pile. 5. Drive sheet piles to the position and line shown. After driving, inspect each sheet pile for position, vertical alignment, buckling or reduced dimensions at any point N-10

6 B. Tolerances: Use templates to hold the sheet piles within the specified tolerances. Drive sheet piles within following maximum tolerances. 1. Horizontal Alignment: The sheet pile head at cutoff elevation shall be within 1 inch of plan location, in both the transverse and longitudinal directions. 2. Plumb: Maintain 1/2 inch in 20 feet from vertical, measured when the sheet pile is above ground in leads. 3. Vertical Alignment: Sheet piles shall not be more than 1 inch out of plumb in 20 feet. a. Pulling laterally on sheet piles to correct misalignment, or splicing a properly aligned section on a misaligned section, will not be allowed. b. If the preceding location and/or alignment tolerances are exceeded, the Engineer will evaluate the extent of displacement. If, in the judgment of the Engineer, corrective measures are necessary, suitable measures shall be designed and taken by the Contractor UNSATISFACTORY SHEET PILES A. The method used in driving sheet piles shall not subject the sheet piles to excessive or undue abuse producing deformation of the steel. B. Misaligned sheet piles shall not be forced back into proper position. C. Sheet piles damaged during driving by reason of internal defects, or by improper driving, or driven out of their proper location, or driven below the designated cutoff elevation shall be corrected by the Contractor, without added compensation, by a method approved by the Engineer SPLICES A.
