2 Isomass acoustic flooring systems Introduction Isomass Ltd supplies acoustic soundproof systems accepted under Approved Document E of the Building Regulations. Acoustic solutions are available for all deck, batten, cradle, screed, walls and ceiling applications. Isomass Ltd s expertise covers all areas of soundproofing standards for acoustic insulation of rooms for residential purposes. Free Site Inspections To further enhance the Isomass offer to the architect, developer or builder we will conduct a site survey to ensure all aspects of the party floor have been considered for the best acoustic performance and provide a written PI (professional Indemnity Insurance) backed specification to fulfil any of the following requirements. Impact and Airborne Test Requirements The diagram shows the scope of the Building Regulations. The requirements for conversion (or change of use) are less onerous compared to New Build because the overall construction is often less prescriptive and as a consequence flanking conditions can be more difficult to deal with. 7 Isocheck RENOVO System : offering maximum environmental credentials whilst minimising structural change Composition Isocheck RENOVO s resilient layer (ecopoli) contains 20% renewable vegetable based components compared to zero in traditionally manufactured petroleum-based foams, with the added benefit of using less fossil fuel components in its manufacture. A completely new catalyst enables castor oil to be employed in the production of low-emission polyols. With castor oil accounting for 30% of the polyol s total weight it can contribute to yet another renewable recipe to help our environment. Isomass will soon be able to offer Isocheck RENOVO with Ecopoli bonded to a new 18mm, carbon negative, p5 strawboard. Flower of the castor oil plant (Ricinus communi). Performance Benefits (Ideal for listed buildings) The Isocheck RENOVO system has been tested by the NHBC for use in conversion applications and it comfortably meets the required performance standards as specified in Approved Document E 2003 without a proprietary resilient bar or MF suspended ceiling system. So now (in cases where the floor void is 200mm or above) it is not necessary to remove a direct fixed ceiling and the existing floor may be rebuilt as a working platform before Isocheck RENOVO is incorporated over the floorboards or chipboard. Making the Isocheck RENOVO system one of the last operations thus avoiding costly protection necessary on alternative direct to joist systems. ] -- PATENT applied for ] -- ed p With the increasing demand for building products to help safe guard the environment, Isomass Ltd are pleased to offer this new acoustic overlay system that not only raises the bar with its environment credentials but delivers a performance that eclipses comparative systems when utilising a direct fixed ceiling such as existing lath & plaster. Castor seed is the source of castor oil, which has a wide variety of uses. The seeds contain between 20% and 90% oil that is rich in triglycerides, mainly ricinolein. Native to Africa, Asia and now naturalised throughout Australia, it is often abundant along watercourses and floodplains. 07

20 Isowave wall system 23 Manufactured with DAC foam Suitable for: E1 - new build (to treat underweight masonry flanking walls) domestic noise issues Composition Isowave acoustic foam measured to BS4443 and BS EN ISO 845:1995 bonded to a moisture resistant cement particle board. The Isowave system 23 is for the treatment of excessive flanking sound that bypasses a separating floor via lightweight structural walls. Isowave system 23: 10mm Isowave acoustic foam bonded to 12.5mm high density, square edged cement particle board. Boards are tapered or squared edged to allow a taped and jointed finish. 45mm 9mm 16mm 19mm Performance (on the construction above) Reduces unwanted flanking noise in order to comply with approved Doc E 2003 rev Overall board size: 2.4m x 600mm x 22.5mm Isowave foam thickness: 10mm Weight: 17.3kg/m2 Density: min 1.1g/cm mm centres The acoustic isowave foam is semi rigid and is an excellent absorber with high damping characteristics when bonded to a reflective stiff surface. Isowave foam is manufactured using water as a blowing agent and is free of CFCs, HFCs or HCFCs. It complies with requirements of EU Regulation No 2037/2000 for ozone depletion and offers good thermal properties. Fix securely to all supports working from the centre of each board outward to the edges using the specified method of fixing at 250mm maximum centres with countersunk cross-slot screws 3.9 x 30mm positioned so as to avoid the timber wall battens. Position fixings not less than 20mm from board edges and 50mm from corners. The heads of all fixings should be sunk into the surface of the board and stopped with joint filler. The square edged cement particle board should be glued with an adhesive, joints to be a maximum 1mm wide. Any excess adhesive to be removed using a spatula once the adhesive has fully hardened. A proprietary fine surface treatment should then be applied to face of board (including joints once the adhesive is dry and excess removed) using 250mm spatula or steel float. Excess to be removed immediately using a larger spatula or steel float leaving finish less than 1mm deep. Once dry; surface to be lightly sanded if required. Where electric socket boxes and light switches are installed the back of the box should be isolated with Isocheck Impacta Pads. 20

These must be used in conjunction with this booklet when laying the Isocheck Impact Mat floor system. Isocheck Impact Mat systems are designed to reduce impact sound transmission through timber floors and staircases. Isocheck Impact Mat: 5.5mm or 9mm Isolate M or 12mm tri-layer system with an Isopoli core. When installed as part of a complete party floor construction this system enables a traditional timber joisted floor to meet the sound transmission standards of ADE 2003 (amended 2004). Timber floors and staircases for conversions, refurbishments and new build. 21

22 Accessories Isocheck isolation tape Used to enhanced the impact sound transmission on stud walls, steel and timber joists. Commonly used for refurbishment upgrades, its adhesive backing ensures it can be held in position as the works progress. Isocheck perimeter flanking band To reduce the level of impact sound travelling vertically via flanking walls around separating floors (flanking noise), the acoustic flooring is isolated from walls and other vertical structures / penetrations with flanking band at all floor edges. This provides a flexible expansion joint (min 5mm). Intumescent acoustic sealant Isocheck acoustic fire rated sealant is used to reduce the unwanted airborne sound that is commonly found to pass around the junction between ceilings and walls. Other common areas requiring attention are sealing around service penetrations in the Isomass floating floor system. Supplied in 310ml tubes. Impacta Pads Impacta Pads are excellent for isolating the backs of kitchen cupboards to break the unwanted connection between the floating floor and the structure. This common connection encourages impact sound transmission to travel from the units down the structural wall to the dwelling below. It is also good practice to place them under bath feet or behind a basin for the same reason. Adhesive For use with both Isocheck and Econocheck board joints. As a rule of thumb a 1 litre bottle (as illustrated) should cover approx 20m2 depending on the board size, ensuring glue is applied to the top and bottom of the t&g joint. Insulation All systems designed for use on timber new build or conversion party floors will require mineral wool insulation between the joists. This is commonly no more than 100mm thick and around 45kg/m3. It is available from most distributors/builders merchants. If in any doubt please contact us for a specification to suit your construction. 22

23 The Building Regulations 2000 The Building (Approved Inspectors etc) Regulations 2000 APPROVED DOCUMENT E1 Protection against sound from other parts of the building and adjoining buildings E2 Protection against sound within a dwelling-house etc E3 Reverbation in the common internal parts of buildings containing flats or rooms for residential purposes E4 Acoustic conditions in schools Regulation 20A The Building Regulations 2000 (as amended) Regulation 12A The Building (Approved Inspections etc) Regulations 2000 (as amended) Technical Support Building Regulations - Noise / Sound Insulation Approved Document E (ADE) of the Building Regulations 2003 (amended 2004) for England & Wales is designed to Resistance to the passage of sound provide standards for E acoustic insulation. These new ADE regulations have changed the pass criteria for airborne sound by putting a greater emphasis on low frequency sound (100Hz - 400Hz) which can be the root cause of many complaints about noise. The Building Regulations 2000 The Building (Approved Inspectors etc) Regulations 2000 Resistance to the passage of sound AMENDMENTS 2004 to Approved Document E (Resistance to the Passage of Sound) Coming into effect 1 July 2004 E ADE applies to both new build and conversion projects defined as rooms for residential purposes which includes hotels, hostels, nursing homes and student accommodation. It applies to the separating walls, floors and ceilings between adjoining dwellings. All Isomass systems are designed to comply with these standards and it is important to understand that builders will need to demonstrate that they have been achieved in two ways. Either pre-completion testing (PCT) for conversion, change of use or new build (that are not using a Robust Detail), or using a Robust Detail (new build only), depending upon the project. As members of the IOA (Institute of Acoustics) Isomass are happy to supply names of suitable consultants to quote for the testing in your area edition incorporating 2004 amendments Testing must be conducted by an accredited acoustic consultant which can be arranged by Isomass. Similar acoustic standards are also enforced under Part H in Scotland and Technical booklet G in Northern Ireland.
