Light and matt colours with a solid feel, and soft patterns suggesting natural materials such as wood or stone, will make the flooring feel secure and inviting for residents. Colour coding and highlighting can provide the visual distinctions and prompts that people need to orient themselves and identify particular areas or functions. For example, using different colours for floors, walls and doors, and highlighting stair treads or using stripes to mark exits will also enhance safety and independence Tarkett have researched the influence of colour and patterns on people living with dementia and Alzheimer s. We have developed significant expertise to assist designers create sympathetic environments to soothe and comfort sufferers. Your Tarkett representative will be delighted to share our knowledge in this area. 6

8 Alzheimer s and Dementia A worldwide concern According to Alzheimer s Disease International (ADI), more than 35.5 million people worldwide are affected by problems linked with Alzheimer s. In 2009 the number of Australians with dementia was estimated to be 245,000 (over 1% of the population). By 2050 the total number will exceed 1,130,000 cases, in excess of a fourfold increase since Developing appropriate interior design to compliment suitable medical treatment in these facilities is a major challenge. CREATING A SUITABLE ENVIRONMENT FOR ALZHEIMER S PATIENTS The role of colour Colour appears to perform an important function in how Alzheimer s patients perceive their environment: Strong and saturated/primary colours may cause behavioural problems while pastel and soft tones encourage a sense of wellbeing and help to create a setting that patients find reassuring. 1 The McCusker Alzheimer s Research Foundation Inc. It s very important to use warm colours for the resident environment in areas such as living, sitting or dining rooms, with cooler or contrasting colours used for the bathroom. Prof. Suzanne Cahill, Research Director, Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland The role of pattern Patterns on walls and floors are important in helping to create a comfortable and familiar environment in an Alzheimer s unit. However, while some patterns may create wellbeing as a reminder of daily life, others can cause confusion. The role of light The major light management issues are luminosity and maintaining circadian rhythms. Light can also improve patient quality of life & comfort by making the hospital environment seem more familiar. Very white or very dark flooring should be avoided because the reflected light can disturb or dazzle patients. 8

9 How flooring helps Secure danger zones Reduced lighting levels or darkness to discourage residents from entering unauthorised or dangerous areas. Make bathrooms safe Bright lighting facilitates orientation, around the washbasin in particular. Contrast between walls and floors aids spacial orientation. Promotes intimacy and memory Floors with patterns that stimulate memory Facilitates walking Use contrasts to clearly identify each zone Follow the circadian rhythm Provides acoustic comfort Light, bright flooring offers good light reflection and helps to re-establish rhythms. Acoustic flooring dampens ambient noise which can be a major source of anxiety. Alzheimer Unit Ostwald, France Recommended Colours Patterns Colours that soothe and reassure patients Natural, mineral and vegetal colours Pastel colours Semi-plain effects Saturated colours for orientation Matt finish Encourage memory Remind patients of familiar environments Neutral, warm plain materials Subtly patterned textures and discreet dots or non-figurative motifs To Avoid Colours Patterns Sharp, electric colours which can cause agitation and confusion Dark brown, black and grey, which can create fear that there is an obstacle Very light colours and white, in particular, that may seem blinding Bright red, which can cause agitation Large stripes in bright colours Repeating geometrical patterns like circles, checkerboards, diamond shapes or grids Flakes with highly contrasted colours Typographic Imitations of natural materials like grass, pebbles, leaves, straw, etc., can create confusion 9
