1 Identification and Form Mortar Mill Entrapment Hearing damage Manual handling injuries GA Mortar prepared by the GA. No other members of staff or trainees use the equipment. Mill loaded by shovelling previously used mortar onto the loading conveyor. Used mortar located beside the conveyor. Grid located over the main part of the conveyor. Cage located over the mill. Crusher/mixer rotates slowly. Water added in through the cage using a hose. Drive motors enclosed. Greasing nipples can be accessed through the cage over the mill. Mixed mortar dropped into a trough and delivered to where it is needed using an electric pallet truck or dropped into a barrow. Door to the mixing area closed during operation. Hearing protection used. Lime mortar Chemical burns/irritation to skin/eyes Gloves used when handling mortar. Hands washed regularly. Safety glasses used when handling mortar. Eye wash. 2 Identification and Form Dust irritation Mortar mixed in separate area. Misters spray water mist into the air in the main workshop to help control airborne dust. When possible, mortar removed while wet. Workshop swept and washed down regularly. Manual Handling Back injuries Muscle strains The precautions applicable to all area, plus: Lintels, windows sills, bricks, blocks etc stored on pallets and moved to work area using pallet truck. Two man lift then used. Mortar trough moved using pallet truck. Alternatively mortar moved in barrow. Dismantling project work irritation due to dust. Lime mortar used during construction as it is easier to dismantle. Gloves, safety glasses and safety shoes worn when dismantling. Bricks, blocks, lintels and sills stored on pallets on one side of the workshop. Skip located in the workshop for material to be disposed of. Walkways and exits kept free of obstructions.
