introduction to car park solutions Access With over 25 years experience, Vexcolt is a leading manufacturer and supplier of expansion joints, control joints and fire barrier systems worldwide. With operations in the United Kingdom, USA, Middle East, India and China, Vexcolt has the capability and experience to work with architects and contractors on a global basis to meet movement and fire protection challenges with elegant and economic solutions. Our comprenensive range of expansion joints is used in large, cutting-edge projects around the world and our collection of products specifically designed for parking decks is extensive. We never forget that a parking deck is where you leave your car before continuing on to your destination. Accessibility for all pedestrians is vital, and as a result, our parking deck products are pedestrian friendly and meet the requirements of ALL international disability regulations, including ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) legislation, throughout their entire movement cycle. Vexcolt works closely with designers and engineers to ensure that profiles specified meet the specific needs of each project, and that they comply with international standards for vehicle loading (as defined by Eurocode 1 EN ) and fire protection (under the requirements of both UL2079 and BS 476). Our car park systems have been carefully developed to provide safe, efficient and long-term methods of sealing car park deck expansion gaps. We never forget that a parking deck is where you leave your car before continuing on to your destination. Accessibility for all is key. 3

introduction to car park solutions Traffic Load & Contact Area Applied load and load contact area are critical elements to be considered when selecting an expansion joint for car park decks. Eurocode 1 EN Actions on Structures - Part 1-1: General actions Densities, self-weight, imposed loads for buildings defines the vehicle loading of parking structures as being from light vehicles of 30kN ( 3.0 tonnes) and 8 seats (excluding the driver). The maximum axle load is 20kN ( 2.0 tonnes) and this is applied through two tyres each with a contact area of 100mm x 100mm. All of Vexcolt s car parking expansion joint systems meet or exceed these requirements. 4 VEXCOLT United Kingdom T : +44 (0) E : enquiries@vexcolt.com W :

introduction to car park solutions Traffic Frequency Traffic Frequency relates to the maximum number of passes that a load makes across the expansion joint system per day. Traffic Frequency has been broken down into 8 groups: TF1 TF2 TF3 TF4 TF5 TF6 TF7 TF8 10 transits per day 100 transits per day 1,000 transits per day 2,500 transits per day 5,000 transits per day 10,000 transits per day 25,000 transits per day > 25,000 transits per day The number of times a load travels across a jointing system can have significant impact upon the life expectancy of the product. 5

introduction to car park solutions Fire Barriers It is vitally important that building designers consider placing fire barriers beneath expansion joints where that jointing system breaches fire compartment floors, walls and ceilings. A fire in an enclosed or underground car park is a major hazard. The fire s proximity to highly flamable substances combined with limited ventilation and escape routes could potentially pose a significant threat to life. It is vital therefore that there is sufficient protection against the spread of fire in these areas. It should be remembered that expansion joints are physical breaks in the continuity of construction and, as such, pass through floor, walls and ceilings. In the event of fire these expansion gaps act as a chimney allowing passage of toxic smoke and fire throughout the building. Where expansion joints pass through compartment floors, walls and ceilings it is important that a suitable fire barrier is installed within the expansion gap. These fire barriers must be able to accommodate the movement that the structure is expected to exhibit while at the same time maintaining the fire integrity of the compartment. Fire barriers are rated in the number of minutes fire proofing integrity that they offer and are grouped into two separate ratings: FB2 FB4 120 minutes fire integrity minimum 240 minutes fire integrity minimum Fire Test Certification Fire barriers are tested and rated to UL 2079 and BS 476. Further details are available in the relevant Technical Datasheets shown later in this brochure. Full details and copies of Vexcolt s UL Certification may be found in the Online Certifications Directory at 6 VEXCOLT United Kingdom T : +44 (0) E : enquiries@vexcolt.com W :

introduction to car park solutions Waterproofing Some ranges of joints contained in this handbook already incorporate waterproofing features; however other expansion joints such as mechanical systems will require a secondary waterproofing membrane to ensure the watertight integrity of the expansion gap. Secondary waterproofing generally should comprise a Firestone 1.15mm thick EPDM membrane epoxy bonded to the substrate either side of the expansion gap. Alternatively a self-adhesive or torch-applied sheet membrane (by others) may be used. It is important to use a membrane that can be bonded and cross linked to the structural waterproofing as this will provide a fully watertight solution. The membrane should be draped into the expansion gap such that it provides sufficient slack to move in response to structural deflection and provision should be made for the drainage of this membrane at the design stage. The membrane should be laid on top of any levelling bed being used and span all gaps and extend at least 100mm beyond gap arrises. It should be carried up all upstands and risers and intersections should be formed carefully and tested to ensure watertightness before expansion joints are installed. It is essential to waterproof some joints, particularly those that are used in the external envelope of a structure where driven rain and pooling of water are likely. 7

fi re barriers for parking deck Expansion Joints & Fire Compartment Walls Expansion joints are physical breaks in the continuity of construction; a gap that runs through floors, walls and ceilings which is designed to allow elements of the building to deflect in response to forces. Sometimes these expansion gaps pass through compartment walls, floors and ceilings and, if they do, the fire integrity of the compartment has to be re-established by installing a fire barrier into the expansion gap. Confusion exists between the terms linear gap seal and fire barrier for expansion gaps. A linear gap seal such as a piece of mineral wool is suitable for a linear gap where no movement is anticipated. It is entirely unsuited for use in expansion gaps where, it is anticipated that the gap will open and close. Mineral wool is not designed to open and close in response to structural deflection whilst at the same time maintaining the fire integrity of the compartment. The following fire barriers are suited for use in expansion gaps up to 500mm wide and accommodating seismic movements of up to +/-250mm. They are tested to BS 476 and to UL 2079 and offer the most comprehensive range of fire barriers for expansion gaps in the world. Certain expansion joints create a path for fire and smoke to travel through. Vexcolt s fire barrier systems cover all building requirements and maintain performance during any building movement. 29
