64 Auditorium Existing Conditions This space is served by two air handling units suspended in the ceiling plenum. These units contain a mixing box with dampers, hot water heating coil, direct expansion (DX) cooling coil and a single supply air fan (condensing units are located on the roof of the Auditorium). The supply air ductwork is located in the ceiling plenum space and distributes the air to the space through 12 round ceiling diffusers. The entire ceiling above the auditorium serves as a return air plenum. The air system was installed during the 1994 renovation of the High School building. There is an existing masonry shaft located in the corner of the stage that would theoretically pull return air from the space to the return air plenum above the ceiling. 67 Auditorium Existing Conditions There were two small 36x12 return air openings added during the 1994 renovation. These two openings are not sized large enough or in the correct location to effectively return air from the space. 68 Auditorium Recommendations Provide a proper return air path to help even out the space temperature. A new 48 x 48 heavy duty return air grille should be installed near the floor level in front of wall air shaft. Four (4) additional grilles should be installed at the back of the Auditorium in the vertical wall/ceiling space. 69 Auditorium Recommendations Extend lined return air ductwork attached to the back side of the four grilles to extend up further into the return air plenum to aid in sound attenuation. The addition of a proper return air path should help provide an even space temperature and aid in occupant comfort. This work could be combined with an Energy Savings Project.
