4 Duplex Steel and Corrosion in Concrete... Researchers at the University Carlos III of Madrid (UC3M) have published a study on the properties of duplex stainless steels against corrosion processes in concrete. The implementation of this type of reinforcement steel in critical areas of a building guarantees the life of those in the marine environment where chloride concentrations are higher. Research Results: Mrs. Asuncion Bautista, a researcher at the Department of Science and Engineering of Materials and Chemical Engineering UC3M, confirms the use of duplex stainless steel in construction to prevent corrosion. The interest lies in investigating these materials also, us a present alternatives in the time of building, because if you use this type of steel "structures could hardly have corrosion problems, even in harsh environments", said the teacher, an author the study. In most cases, the deterioration of reinforced concrete structures due to chloride, water or carbon dioxide penetration from the atmosphere. This causes a variation of ph and, therefore, corrosion of steel structures, as well as reducing the life of the concrete. This leads to another problem, the economic: "There is a very high percentage of GDP spent on solving the problems of corrosion and in 20-30% of cases, afford this if we apply the research being conducted," says scientific. 5 Duplex Steel and Corrosion in Concrete... A historic investment and smart The main limitation of this type of steel is related to its high cost. However, its use is not necessary for any structure, but only at critical points such as corners, external areas, bridges or marine zones, ie those places where it is most likely that there are problems of corrosion. At first, the initial expenditure by using duplex steels increases between 5 and 15%, however, its use in the construction minimize maintenance costs of buildings and would make a negligible cost. To mrs. Asuncion Bautista, "the use of duplex steels is in the long run, a wise investment in environments with high chlorides and high temperatures". A typical example where you are using the duplex steel is in the construction of mosques in the Arab countries. These buildings are intended to last for centuries in an adverse environment as the Persian Gulf. In addition, also presented as an alternative for the repair of buildings of historic interest and, thus, increase its durability over time. Duplex stainless steels have a structure of two phases: austenite and ferrite. This composition has a better performance against corrosion and has superior mechanical properties when compared with typical stainless steel. In this study, it has demonstrated by using techniques electrochemical and surface analysis, that the passive layer to prevent corrosion of these steels, is more protective. It was also found that the corrosion resistance of these steels in concrete is significantly higher than the austenitic which has more experience as reinforcements for concrete. This study, "Passivation of duplex stainless steel in solutions simulating chloridecontaminated concrete" has been published in the journal 'Building Materials' by a group of researchers from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Universidad Autonoma de Madrid and the CNRS-UPMC (Paris). 6 Chilean Tersainox and mills... For a major olive oil mill in the country, Tersainox has designed and manufactured tanks for storage and production of olive oil. For olive oil production, we had produced with great success and according to customer requirements, conical tanks bottoms for better drainage of oil and for evacuating the excess oil. For storage of finish olive oil, Tersainox fabricated flat-bottomed tanks with no legs, to give the guarantee to preserve the oils for a long time. Both tanks qualities far exceeded customer expectations, as it produced one hundred percent sanitary finish, with high quality fittings with gaskets for oil, at a minimum of time and mounted in inaccessible places. Thanks to the experience and capabilities of our engineering, production and quality control. Tersainox achievement meet the standards and qualities that demanded the final customer. Remarks of Eric Miranda, Tersainox food area manager, directly involved with the engineers of the new mill. In the mill, we try not to move the finish olive oils tanks and for this reason that tanks needed to fully meet our requirements in quality material and internal polished steel finish. Tersainox was the only provider in Chile that met all our demands, which showed us that we are right in the election. For the quality, professionalism, confidence and fulfillment in committed, is that my partners and I decided to send to make more tanks, skipping the stage of looking for more suppliers. Were the words of the owner of the mill. Eric Miranda Lagos. Food and Spirits Division. Page No. 5

7 Tersainox Australia: Grand Challenges, Great Achievement... The Australian first vineyards were planted in 1788 in a small area near the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Today, the vineyard extends over 62 wine regions regulated covering a total of 170,000 hectares. Australia is the fourth largest exporter of wine, with a distribution that reaches over 100 countries spread all over the world. The country is now considered a leader in combining tradition, innovative technology and new ideas Australian vineyards today are changing their view of the market, producing more premium wines and reinventing and creating new boutique vineyards changing volume by price. Our affiliate Tersainox Australia in its third year established in the country has posed a great challenge to change the concept of Australian vineyards. standard in terms of design, materials, and finishes of our teams. Covering materials like 316 stainless steel fermenters or selling stainless steel platforms never seen in Australian vineyards. It was not an easy task. We had to first build confidence with our Australian customers for which we have gone with two of the leading distributors of equipment for wineries in Australia that have a presence in major wine regions of Australia. We understood this task as a challenge and this year we have had great achievements. Exporting 22 containers of 40ft each with equipment and platforms to the most exclusive boutique wineries in Australia. As we know, people are talking about us in this great Australian market and we succeeded in opening a big door for finally settling down as a great alternative for price and quality. Cristian Lohse. 8 Standard seismic NCh2369 and Ponds... Today, the Chilean seismic standard NCh2369 is in the minds of all engineers and designers of structures, circuits, tanks, towers, ducts and equipment for much of Chilean companies. The earthquake of February 27 of this year affected large part of the domestic industry in the central area and with it, the importance and validity of this norm once again it has been proven in our country and also internationally. Our customers in the category Wine, Agro-Industrial, Cellulose, Chemical, Petrochemical and other areas were affected varying the degrees of damage. For a prestigious client of cellulose, all their plants were affected by the earthquake and several working circuits presented problems. With regard to the tanks and recently manufactured Stripper Columns by Tersainox to there Mininco plant, they all withstand well the seismic event out gracefully. The comments has been positive towards our equipments until today. Tersainox SA since he began the manufacture of tanks, columns, towers and equipment, has considered standard NCh2369 in the design and calculation of the sheets, ceiling, bottoms, structure, anchor bolts chairs, cutting keys and other details team. And, therefore, has offered customers the Memory Calculation when listed and he is the one who decides whether or not to endorse the required purchase of the tanks or equipment. To illustrate, we present the two most used types of tanks according to earthquake standards: 1) High Tanks resting on legs: These tanks are designed considering the mobility of the liquid in height and which are supported on legs with side reinforcements, hopefully in X, to affirm the structure and dissipate the energy of oscillatory earthquake. Also it can be use skirts. 2) Vertical Tanks resting on Soil: These tanks are usually cylindrical or rectangular, symmetrical about a vertical axis and with the bottom resting on the ground or foundations. 9 Standard seismic NCh2369 and Ponds... Tanks consider API or AWWA standards for their design and manufacturing. The NCh2369 complements these in determining the seismic forces by location, risk and safety required and thus achieve a safe design. It is also necessary to consider the liquid mass in an earthquake divided into an impulsive movement which vibrates in unison with the structure and convective motion, generating waves on the surface, all in conjunction with the period duration of the earthquake. In turn, the waves generated indoor air movement ceiling. Hence the importance of properly defining the thickness of the shells, the bottom and roof of the tank. In all the structures, anchor bolts and keys cut, are necessary to contain the vertical and horizontal movement, preventing the displacement of the tank and lodging. An adequate level of revenge between the ceiling and the surface of the liquid. Along with determining the diameter of the vent pipe to allow a proper breath of air in motion. Tersainox SA has dedicated time and resources to achieve appropriate design industrial tanks to Chilean reality and avoid the negative consequences of an earthquake. When you think of stainless steel tanks. Think Tersainox S.A. We will be happy to answer your inquiries and support your projects. Guillermo Rudolph. Sales Engineer. Page No. 8
