2 SPEC /7 1.0 PURPOSE This specification describes the minimum requirements for painting of concrete block masonry with a three coat interior paint system. This system is primarily used for lunchrooms and vestibules. This paint system to be applied to concrete block masonry as specified on the project drawings, Room Finish Schedule. 2.0 APPLICATION This specification, applies at any Vale locations indicated with approval on the cover page, with the following exceptions: 2.1 EXCEPTIONS None..0 REFERENCE DOCUMENTATION The following documents were used in the development of this document or have instructions and procedures applicable to it. They shall be used in their most recent revision. SPEC Paint General Requirements 4.0 MATERIALS Block Filler Prime Coat Finish Coat Emulsion Type Filler Waterborne Alkyd Semi-Gloss Enamel Waterborne Alkyd Semi-Gloss Enamel ly one coat Filler/Primer to produce a smooth finish; filler must be compatible with finish coat. Paint to be Waterborne Alkyd Enamel, two coats minimum 2 mils dry film thickness per coat, exclusive of filler. Do not exceed "pot-life" recommended by Manufacturer. Colour as specified on Room Finish Schedule. For other concrete block masonry, where specified on project drawings Room Finish Schedule:

3 SPEC-1500 /7 ly one coat block filler primer at the rate of 1 gallon per 100 sq. ft. and two coats Waterborne Alkyd Pearl Enamel. 5.0 PRESENTATION Preparation of Surfaces Wash surface with water and a mild detergent and scrub with a wire brush. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry. If irregularities occur on face, rub surfaces with carborundum brick, patch all holes prior to scrubbing. If efflorescence appears after 48 hours, wash affected areas with vinegar and water solution or with a solution of lb. zinc sulphate per gallon of water and allow to dry. Moisture content of block must not exceed 20% when painting begins. Test surfaces for alkalinity with pink litmus paper or other recognized method. Where extreme alkalinity occurs wash surface with 4% solution tetrapotassium pyrophosphate ( oz. per gallon of water) 6.0 PAINT APPLICATION 6.1 GENERAL Finishes specified in the Schedule are intended to cover surfaces completely. If they do not, apply further coats until complete uniform coverage is achieved as required. Any areas exhibiting incomplete or unsatisfactory coverage must have the entire plane painted. Patching will not be acceptable. Spraying will not be allowed without written permission. Paint must be uniform in sheen, colour, and texture, free from brush or roller marks, sags, roller hairs, runs or other defects. 7.0 PRODUCT DELIVERY, HANDLING, STORAGE Deliver materials to site in their original containers with labels intact and store in spaces directed by Owner. Keep stored materials covered at all times and take all necessary precaution against fire. During work of this Section provides CO2 fire extinguisher of minimum 20 lb. capacity in paint storage area. 8.0 JOB CONDITIONS 8.1 ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Do not paint or finish in unclean or improperly ventilated area. Do not paint in temperatures lower than 10 Degrees C. 8.2 PROTECTION Provide metal pans or adequate tarpaulins to protect floors in areas assigned for the storage and mixing of paints. Use sufficient drop cloths and protective coverings for the full protection of floors, furnishings and work not being painted. Protect mechanical, electrical and special equipment, hardware, all other components of the building which do not require painting, from paint spotting and other soiling during the painting process. Keep waste rags in metal drums containing water and remove from building at end of each working shift. 9.0 PAINT MATERIALS 9.1 GENERAL Products of the following manufacturers will be accepted providing that proposals are equivalent in quality, formulation, available colours and finish. a) CIL

5 SPEC /7 b) PPG c) DULUX d) Pratt & Lambert e) Benjamin-Moore All colours must be as specified on Colour Schedule. Colours to be verified prior to purchase. Of necessity, the colour selections are made from the products of one Manufacturer. If it is proposed to use the products of a different Manufacturer than used for colour selections, it must be the responsibility of this Subtrade to submit to the Owner a revised colour schedule showing by means of paint sample chips, the equivalent colours it is proposed to use. Where accent colours are specified on Colour Schedule, additional coats above those scheduled will be required to obtain uniform coverage. Accordingly, this trade must allow in their stipulated sum for two additional coats above those scheduled on 25% of painted wall surfaces; if location of accent colours are not indicated on floor plan MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL WORK Finish paint primed mechanical equipment: convertors, wall fin perimeter induction heating units. Paint insulated and bare pipes where exposed to view. Prime and paint exposed, unfinished electrical raceways, fittings, outlet boxes, junction boxes, pull boxes, and similar items. Replace identification markings on mechanical and electrical work when painted over or spattered. Remove grilles, covers, access panels for mechanical and electrical systems from installed location and paint separately, if these items are not factory finished. Paint work to match adjacent walls and ceilings unless directed otherwise. Paint interior surfaces of air ducts that are visible through grilles and louvers with one coat of flat black metal paint to limit of sight line. Carefully install all removed grilles, covers etc. upon completion of painting.
