3 to specify a Gradus stair edging is to provide peace of mind - there is no equal peace of mind the law Several areas of guidance and legislation now exist to assist with the selection of suitable stair edgings, to help building owners achieve an inclusive environment in line with the Disability Discrimination Act 199 (DDA). Light Reflectance Values - BS893: guidance on the use of colour and contrast within the built environment to aid access for all users (see pages 16 to 16). BS8300: good practice recommendations for the design of domestic and non-domestic buildings and their approaches to meet the needs of disabled people (see page 166 to 167). The Building Regulations Approved Document M (200) - guidance to help building owners meet their legal duty of ensuring all uses gain access and use its facilities (see page 168). Increased slip-resistance on stairs - BRE - guidance on the best way to assess the types of proprietary nosings that should be provided on non-domestic stairs (see page 169). Gradus has devoted significant resource to product development to ensure our products help meet these requirements. This is backed up by our guarantee statement (see page 163), and all our specification consultants are trained to offer advice and guidance in this area to help you make the right selection. 10

Over 100,000 injuries are reported on non-domestic stairs each year and the latest HSE figures show that 100 deaths result directly from falls and trips on stairs. Stair edgings significantly contribute to safety when selected correctly and can help towards achieving an inclusive environment in line with the latest guidance in BS8300 : 2009 and ADM 200. The following key factors need to be considered when selecting a stair edging: slip-resistance the environment in which stair edgings are situated will determine the correct selection of insert material to ensure slip-resistance. Gradus offers a choice of insert types (see pages 12 to 13). fixing a secure fixing is essential. All stair edgings should be installed in line with the installation guidance on page 160. environment the type of building and volume of traffic will determine the correct selection of stair edging. Guidance can be found on page 62. In addition Gradus specification consultants are pleased to offer advice tailored to a particular project and application. health and safety at the forefront of all Gradus product design. The most recent addition is the XT range, featuring an enhanced level of slip-resistance. Details can be found on pages 16 to 21 (Aluminium range) and to 7 (PVC-u Hardnose range). the future We are constantly adding to, and evolving our product range to ensure we offer you the most up-to-date solutions. This brochure contains details of the XT range, a new edge in safety on stairs, and Xtra-grip, a new high performance insert offering increased slip-resistance. 5 slip-resistance & performance types of insert - critical choice An insert provides slip-resistance at the step edge to reduce the risk of slips on stairs All Gradus inserts are measured for LRVs to provide a colour contrast to ensure the step edge is clearly visible - see page 1 for colour choice All Gradus inserts are designed and tested to ensure optimum performance throughout the life of the product The environment in which the stair edging is to be used determines the type of insert - see below xtra-grip insert Registered Community Design no Pvc incorporating mineral aggregate and a wear layer Offers increased surface roughness to reduce the risk of slip, particularly where the stair edging may become wet, e.g. stairways close to entrances or where safety flooring is used Suited to areas where health and safety is a priority, e.g. in public buildings such as schools and hospitals Achieves a low risk of slip in both dry and wet conditions (see figure 1) Mineral Aggregate Wear Layer Pvc Base Carrier Registered Community Design no shown in XT stair edging xtra-grip plus insert Registered Community Design no Xtra-grip Plus features all the benefits of Xtra-grip and utilises an enhanced insert bond system making it suitable for interior areas that require more frequent cleaning such as catering and food preparation environments 12

47 guide to stair trims & welded corners description Welded corners are designed to form a neat and attractive edge around the open end of a step by concealing the edge of the floorcovering and stair edging. Welded corners are supplied pre-welded to suit the angle between the riser and tread of the step (78-90 ). They are available in a variety of gauges to suit different floorcoverings. Welded corners are available with either a fixed flange or separate fixing clips as shown on the opposite page. When selecting the appropriate welded corner the thickness of the screed, the floorcovering and the combined thickness of the stair edging riser and floorcovering must be considered to ensure a neat finish. Profiles are also available in longer lengths to be used as trimming strips on landings etc. In addition to welded corners a range of specialist stair trims can be found on the following pages (6 to 9). D XT range For details on XT side trims and welded corners refer to page 20 (Aluminium) and page 7 (PVC-u Hardnose). Fixed with screws and adhesive. mitre joint Welded corners with TC2 clips must be mitred. TAC2 should also be mitred. type of jointing butt joint Two adjoining welded corners can be butt jointed for all corners with TC1 clips and fixed tabs. note To achieve an optimum finish the angle between each riser and tread should be the same. Remedial work may need to be undertaken prior to installation to achieve this.

48 TAB to suit up to 3.mm resilient floorcoverings 3 designs to choose from welded corner with fixed flange (page 6) Welded corners are fabricated using a trimming strip of the correct gauge to suit the thickness of the floorcovering. Different types of trimming strip can be combined on the tread and riser to accommodate the combined thickness of the floorcovering and riser of the stair edging e.g. TAB (tread)/ta (riser). Welded corners are fixed with a proprietary cartridge adhesive. Note: the use of a latex screed to disguise the fixing flange may be required when using vinyl or linoleum. A gauge welded corner with TC1 clips (page 7) HT2, HXT2, MT2, TA2, TAC2 and TAXT2 all use the TC1 clip which is adjustable to provide an upstand of 6mm, 8mm or 10mm on the tread or riser. The clip is positioned in one of the grooves using two clips per tread and one per riser and the side trim is then fixed on with proprietary cartridge adhesive. When this has cured the clip is removed. Different clip positions can be used on the tread and riser to allow for the combined thickness of the floorcovering and riser of the stair edging. B TA to suit up to 6.0mm (combined thickness of resilient floorcovering and stair edging riser) Fixed Flange gauge 6mm 8mm 10mm TC1 C welded corner with TC2 clips (page 7) TA0, TA66 and BT2 all use the TC2 clip which is made from spring steel and is used in approximately the same positions as TC1 but is left in position after the proprietary cartridge adhesive cures. gauge TC2 Surveying Service Gradus Accessories offers a free measuring and templating service to ensure optimum product selection. TA6 is an aluminium trimming strip used to form a central run of resilient floorcovering on stairs and landings. Can also be used on the riser. TA6 Aluminium Diagram shows AS11 and TA6 trimming strip with a special on-site fabrication. bevelled underlay BU 200 Bevelled underlay is a flexible pvc material used as a diminishing strip and is ideal for building up resilient floorcoverings for use with mm stair edgings. This is an ideal solution where a heavy-duty stair edging is required with a resilient floorcovering. Grooves along the length of the underlay provide a straight cutting edge at points where the thickness gives ideal height adjustment. Bevelled underlay is fitted with a proprietary contact adhesive and it is advisable to feather the tapered edge with a thin layer of latex cement. Diagram shows BU200 bevelled underlay being used to build up a 3.2mm linoleum to ensure a flush finish with the back edge of a G11 stair edging (mm gauge).
