1 SECTION QUARRY TILE PART 1 GENERAL 1.1 SECTION REQUIREMENTS A. Provide all labor, materials and equipment required for the installation of quarry tile flooring as shown on drawings and schedules and as specified herein. 1.2 SUBMITTALS A. The Contractor shall submit for the Architect's approval: 1. The manufacturer's complete descriptive literature and standard design and color selector charts for each type of tile and trim specified. 2. Samples in triplicate of each different type, design, color, and size of tile and trim selected from the manufacturer's charts, for final approval by the Architect. 3. When so requested by the Architect, submit setting drawings for specific areas showing tile layouts and locations and types of special pieces of trim. 4. A written guarantee that all work required by this Section shall be free from defects in material and workmanship, provided the Contractor is notified in writing by the Owner of any defect within one (1) year from date of completion and acceptance of the project. 5. 2 1.4 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Materials shall be delivered to the project site in their original unopened packages or sealed containers clearly labeled with the manufacturer's name, product identification, required environmental storage conditions precautionary notices, and lot numbers where appropriate. B. Store materials in cool, dry, well-ventilated storage areas reserved for this purpose and protect from damage by impact, abrasion, spillage, etc. C. Any damage or otherwise imperfect tiles shall be discarded and removed from the project site. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS A. American Olean B. Florida Tile C. Summitville D. Dal Tile 2.2 MATERIALS A. Quarry tile shall be 6 inches by 6 inches by 1/2 inch thick standard grade conforming to ANSI A Materials is from American Olean specified here in as reference. B. Dry-set mortar shall be "Thin Set" mortar conforming to ANSI A D. Grouting shall be "Sanded Floor Grout". San Juan, Puerto Rico Quarry Tiling

3 E. Colors to be selected by the Architect. 2.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. The installation of quarry tile flooring shall be done by the product manufacturer's authorized installer of installer with a minimum of five years of experience on similar type of project, workmen involved in the installation shall be thoroughly qualified and familiar with the manufacturer's recommended procedures. B. All work shall be done in strict accordance with the product manufacturer's written instructions and recommendations. C. The Contractor shall notify the Owner's Representative in writing of any unsatisfactory conditions or defects which he considers would impede the execution of his work. Lack of such notification shall indicate acceptance by the Contractor of existing conditions as fittings for the installation of quarry tile flooring as required. D. Areas where quarry tile is to be installed shall be clean and free of moisture, oil, grease, dust and any other foreign matter or conditions that prevent adhesion, all bumps shall be chipped and scraped-off smooth, all cracks filled, and all depressions leveled-off and failed employing the recommended procedures of the flooring products manufacturers. E. Contractor shall verify that area to be tiled does not have a variation of more than 1/8 inch in 10 feet. F. All materials shall be firmly secured in place. 4 G. Intersections and returns shall be perfectly formed. Cutting and drilling neatly done without marring surface. Cut edges against trim, finishes, fixtures, and other work accurately ground, fitted and jointed. Around electrical outlets, pipes, fixtures, and fittings, tile shall fit close so that regular planes, collars or coverings will overlap the material. H. All tile work shall be laid out on floors in such manner that no tiles less than half full size be used. I. Joints for quarry tile shall be approximately 1/2 inch throughout. J. Before any tile is set, consult with all other trades and contractors to see that all pipes, drains, sleeves,inserts, bucks, frames, supports for plumbing fixtures, and any other material to be installed before the work are properly installed. k. All work shall be covered and protected from stains or damage of any kind. If any work is damage or marred, it shall be removed and replaced with sound material by the Contractor without additional cost to the Owner. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 INSTALLATION A. Mix and apply dry set mortar as by manufacturer's recommendations, minimum thickness shall be 1/4 inch. B. Set tiles straight & true, leaving a 1/2 inch joint throughout, and tamp solidly with wood blocks or mallets in order to assure a firm bond. C. As soon as mortar bed has hardened sufficiently, rake out joints to a uniform depth of approximately 3/8 inch and wipe tiles clean of all excess mortar. San Juan, Puerto Rico Quarry Tiling

5 D. Prepare grouting as by manufacturer's recommendations. E. While joints are still damp, apply grouting and properly tool joints to a barely concave configuration. F. Installation shall conform to ANSI A CLEAN-UP A. Remove all waste and excess material and rubbish from the work areas and properly dispose of it away from the project site. B. Take away all equipment, tools and utilities, leaving the work areas clean, free of obstructions. C. It shall be the Contractor's sole responsibility to properly protect all tile work from damage or defacement of whatever nature until final inspection and acceptance of the work. D. Just prior to final inspection and acceptance remove all protective coverings and wash and clean tile to the satisfaction of the Architect. 3.3 PROTECTION FROM TRAFFIC A. Contractor shall prohibit foot and wheel traffic from using newly tiled floors for at least 3 days, preferably 7 days. B. Contractor shall place large, flat boards in walkways and wheelways for 7 days where use of newly tiled floors. END OF SECTION San Juan, Puerto Rico Quarry Tiling
