Dramatic Lightweight Roof 1. Stansted Airport - pavilion-like appearance (like some giant metallic sunshade or umbrella: parasol) - square lattice-shelled steel roof module (grid): indicate orthogonal nature of the plan - made up of square-metre dome modules - unlikely to get lost: (from almost any point inside the building) can see all four walls and all four corners of the roof - clutter-free: no suspended ceiling/ fluorescent lights/ mysterious dust-gathering ducts, tubes or pipes - continuous roof membrane: no penetrations, no expansion joints, not a single rainwater pipe - floating pvc roof: undulating roof of domes seeming buoyant and to float above improbably thin steel struts - supported by a space frame of inverted-pyramid roof trusses

2. Chek Lap Kok Airport - aeroplane-like (wing-like) appearance - prefabricated vaulted steel roof: developed out of one simple vault module - extends a concept pioneered at Stansted Airport - covers the building like a blanket: providing the symbolic identity of the building - a spectacular gateway to the city - continuous barrel vaults running east-west (with the grain & angle of the structure): provides instant orientation (both inside & outside) - provides a constant point of reference for passengers: whether you are arriving or departing - direction of the vaults remains constant throughout the building: an aid to navigation

3. Beijing Airport - dragon-like appearance - a symbol of place: soaring aerodynamic roof and dragon-like form celebrates the thrill of flight and evokes traditional Chinese colors and symbols (representative of a dragon) - changing color system in the roof (steel trusses structures): shifting from red to orange to yellow (Beijing s imperial palaces and temples) - red: domestic (the Chinese color for good luck,) yellow: international - welcoming and uplifting: as the gateway to the city for athletes participating in the twenty-ninth Olympiad - roof structure: a steel space frame with triangular roof lights and colored metal decking - curve (sloping) roof : rising at the midpoint, and tapering towards the edges of the building

4. Canary Wharf Underground Station - swelling landscape glass canopies cover two main entrances (east & west) (the only visible elements on the ground level): in the form of large glass-domed bubbles made up of fair-faced concrete, stainless steel and glass - Canary Wharf s principal public recreation space on the ground level between two entrances serving as the roof - minimize the physical and visual impact of the above-ground station structures - directional signage for passengers to find entrances - main canopies comprises 9 steel-plate box-girder arches, elliptical in elevation, varying in size and tapering towards apex - a secondary structure of circular-hollow-section purlins: ties the steel arches together - whole frame: clad with laminated toughened glass panels (3x1m), which are curved in the long direction - a sense of transparency and lightness: integrated well into the landscape park without damaging the atmosphere

5. Dresden Station Redevelopment - extended barrel-vaulted roofs - Past: sheathed in wood boarding, admitting no daylight Now: a lightweight fabric roof - 30,000-square-metre roof sheathed in a translucent membrane skin of white Teflon-coated glass fiber - new fabric roof: pulled tightly down into the springing points of the arches in alternate bays, forming a fan vault somewhat reminiscent of that of King s College Chapel - like a tent or a hilly landscape pierced with funnels down which the rainwater disappears - respecting the existing structure, reinforcing the impact it makes, and introducing forward-looking elements to represent modern-day rail travel - existing iron structures + additional structural steel members
