This HB provides a complete coverage of Plant Commissioning in an orderly and practical manner, from planning to implementation By Didaskalex ***** A chemical plant is an industrial process plant that manufactures chemicals, on a large scale, via the chemical, and physical or biological conversion and/or material separation. Chemical plants use special technology with units, equipment, and control systems to achieve its final product. Worldwide, only a limited list of international contractors are capable of designing and constructing process units, like Bechtel, Fluor, KBR, Lummus, Lurgi, Parsons, and Chiyoda, JCC in Middle and Far East. Contractors could still provide pre & commissioning services, and may support the start up, in coordination with process Licensors. This guide covers commissioning of chemical process plants, to complement industrial plant/ equipment completion check, prior to plant start up. Pre & commissioning are conducted by, or on behalf of the owner/operator to guarantee that the engineering contractor has fulfilled his contractual obligation towards the mechanical and structural completion of plant facilities. The units are to be turned in a clean tidy condition. The construction is considered complete with the signing of the 'mechanical completion check list', such as API Publication 700. All the activities specified in the Completion Checklist are to be agreed as have been carried out. From the reading, it appears that much could also apply to an oil refinery. Many of the steps will seem like common sense. Overall, the text is about processes and documents. There is a surfeit of paperwork, and indeed much still seems to exist as hardcopy. Of course, all is primarily for safety. The processes include checking any mechanical interlocks. Plus also when check valves are used, these invariably have some internal device in the flow stream. There are tests to see if the internal device is actually present, and that it works, and that it is in the correct process flow. Tests, tests and yet more tests. So to give a flavour, just one page of the text talks about procedures like - fitting locks onto all valves, packing a reactor with catalyst, installing filter media into filters, filling a mill with beads. Other tests include checking that exit routes are clearly identified and illuminated. By the way, if you have ever seen photos of chemical plants at night, they are usually heavily lighted up. One reason is safety, because usually there are personnel deployed at all hours. The book also gives figures of example check sheets, with stern warnings that such should never be a substitute for actually doing the tests. Here are some of this text's attributes: -The author's knowledge and experience is presented in clear, direct language (instead of couched in an onslaught of jargon). -The charts, graphs, and illustrations are large and support the material (they are not used as "filler" for the text). -The author is immensely responsible. He addresses nearly every hazard... and, perhaps more importantly, discusses how to prevent that situation from occurring in the first place. In this sense, the text is extremely proactive. -The entire fourth chapter is devoted to blank commissioning documents. This is a sage, practical choice. These documents are invaluable to the reader. They could easily be scanned and then manipulated to one's specific needs.

8 -The extensive appendix provides sample inspection reports, status charts, and a variety of worksheets. Every need is addressed. The hefty price many prompt potential buyers to look elsewhere.
