1 Steel Structures Seminar Impo rtant Update: Practical Steel Frame Design & Fabrication Standards N ATIONWIDE: AUCKLAND TO DUNEDIN 25 July - 24 August 2018

2 The 2018 edition of our popular Steel Structures Seminar is a must-attend event for practic ing structural engineers, engineering students and academics. The half-day seminar will lead with an overview of the design of seismic-resistant steel buildings with moment resisting frames for low rise industrial and multi-level buildings, and discuss research into the seismic performance of steel buildings during the Kaikoura Earthquake with recommendations to further improve steel construction performance in severe earthquake events. Tips on cost effective structural arrangements for portal frames structures will also be shared. The second session will focus on steel fabrication and standards updates. Included will be a demonstration of where cost savings can be made in design and why shop detailing is done in-house by the fabricator, giving attendees a behind-the -scenes look at a fabrication shop. The seminar will look at the new AS/NZS 5131 fabrication and erection standard, which is now cited in the Building Code, and the role of the engineer in its implementation. Also looked at will be the new technical standard for the durability of steel structures. Why Attend Hear directly from steel industry experts Keep your engineering knowledge relevant and up-to-date Improve your skills in the design of cost-effective and seismically resilient steel structures Learn about steel fabrication and how structural steel contractors can add value Network with industry peers Dates and Venues T AURANGA - 17 JULY 2018 Trinity Wharf, 51 Dive Crescent D UNEDIN - 15 AUGUST 2018 Distinction Hotel, 6 Liverpool Street HAMILTON - 18 JULY 2018 Novotel Tainui, 7 Alma Street NAPIER - 25 JULY 2018 The Crown Hotel, 22a Waghorne St AUCKLAND - 26 JULY 2018 Crowne Plaza, 128 Albert Street CHRISTCHURCH - 16 AUGUST 2018 Chateau on the Park, 189 Deans Ave PALMERSTON NORTH - 22 AUGUST 2018 Hotel Coachman, 140 Fitzherbert Ave WELLINGTON - 23 AUGUST 2018 Copthorne Hotel, 100 Oriental Parade

3 Programme 12:30pm Registration 1:00 SESSION 1 Design of Seismic-Resistant Steel Buildings - Moment-Resisting Frames Kevin Cowie, Senior Engineer, Moment frame structures provide architectural freedom in design, permitting open bays and unobstructed view lines. Both the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes have reminded engineers of the importance of ensuring resilience in the design of seismic frames. This presentation will cover: The seismic response of moment-resisting steel-framed seismic-resisting systems Design and detailing requirements for steel moment-resisting frames to possess an appropriate level of ductility as well as to satisfy the earthquake loading provisions of the loading standard. L essons Learned from the Kaikoura Earthquakes Alistair Fussell, Consultant, The 2016 Kaikoura earthquake was the second leargest earthquake in New Zealand since European settlement. Attendees will hear about the seismic performance of structural steel buildings during the earthquake. Results of the HERA-commissioned research report on the seismic performance will be presented together with recommendations to further improve the performance of steel construction in severe earthquakes. Portal Alistair Frame Design Tips Fussell, Consultant,, Jamie Macredie,, Steltech and Amir Shahmohammadi, Steltech Smart design and detailing can have a significant impact on the cost of steel portal frame buildings. Attendees will receive tips on cost-effective structural arrangements of with emphasis on optimising the combination of critical components: cladding, purlins and portal frame member sizes and connections. This session also addresses the seismic design of portal framed structures. 3:00 Afternoon Tea 3:30 SESSION 2 What Every Engineer Should Know About Fabrication Wayne Carson, Chairman, and Bob Hawley, Councillor, Attendees will learn about where cost savings can be made in design, why shop detailing is done in-house by the fabricator, will be taken on a 'walk through' of a structural steel fabrication workshop. What Every Engineer Should Know About the New Fabrication & Erection Standard Alistair Fussell, Consultant, AS/NZS 5131 is now cited in the Building Code B1/VM1 for Steel Fabrication & Erection. the new standard and their role in its implementation. The New Technical Standard Durability of Steel Structures Kevin Cowie, Senior Engineer, and Zahid Hamid,, Learn about the new technical standard for the Durability of Steel Structures and how to apply warrantees. and In this session engineers will learn about 5:30 Networking Drinks
