3 Siemens Foto: Siemens VERSATILE AND FLEXIBLE LEVEL CROSSING BARRIERS FROM EUROPOLES Regardless of whether the barriers are full-length or half-length or for walking or biking paths they must be readily identifiable for everyone and reliably ensure safety. These are precisely the requirements that Europoles fulfils with its fibreglass-reinforced plastic level crossing barriers, which are available as round and square barriers. As a Q1 supplier of Deutsche Bahn AG (DB AG) for many years, these barriers fulfill the strict technical regulations of German National Railways, thereby proving their quality both in Germany and around the world. Individual requirements Europoles level crossing barriers made of fibreglassreinforced plastic (FRP) are delivered white as standard. Various RAL colour shades are available by colouring the polyester resin. Subsequent painting is not necessary. Each level crossing barrier is equipped with a weatherresistant, reflective tape that is highly resistant to corrosion and solvents. The reflecting system of the reflective tape ensures that light shined on it is reflected back without glare. Different tape types, colours and cuts can be selected depending on the country-specific specifications. Special equipment such as LED lighting or arm breakage monitoring can be installed in the FRP level crossing barrier, allowing for a customised design.

4 LONG-LASTING DESPITE WIND AND WEATHER ECONOMICAL AND MAINTENANCE-FREE The centrifugal process gives the FRP level crossing barriers a sealed and perfectly smooth surface that is not at all susceptible to weathering. There is no danger of corrosion with fibreglass-reinforced plastic (FRP). This and the high UV resistance of the material result in a life expectancy of at least 25 years. The material is perfectly suitable for the demands made on a level crossing barriers, since FRP possesses very good vibration-damping properties, allowing it to withstand highly dynamic loads. If a vehicle goes through a closed barrier, the barrier will break in the predetermined breaking point close to where it is mounted. This construction prevents the barrier from bending into the area of the track or road. The predetermined breaking points themselves are smooth, which in contrast to a splintered break prevents further injuries. This also minimises the damage to the vehicle involved. As an insulator, FRP provides maximum personal safety in the event that it comes into contact with the overhead line. In addition, it is extremely difficult to ignite. This is why the use of our FRP products is also welcomed at airports, where safety requirements are extremely strict.

5 POLE-BREAKAGE MONITORING INCREASED SAFETY Due to increasing safety requirements for the international railway market, Europoles has developed arm breakage monitoring for round level crossing barriers. This is realised by means of a copper strand that is firmly embedded in the wall. The strand is completely maintenance-free and reliably detects any breakage along the entire length of the arm through an interruption in the safety circuit. If a vehicle breaks through the level crossing barrier, the approaching train will be stopped by a signal which will only be triggered if the level crossing barrier is broken.
