1 Retractable ceiling column Installation Manual Retractable Ceiling Column Models 8301 & 8301PC

2 Overview The Retractable Ceiling Column is a convenient and cost-effective way of supplying medical gas and electrical services in surgery and special care areas. This compact ceiling-suspended unit eliminates hoses and cables from the floor and may be equipped with grounding and electrical receptacles, IV hooks, computer and communication outlets, and nitrogen control panel. The unit has a 13-1/2" upper section for rigid mounting at the ceiling level, and a 12" telescoping lower section capable of 16" vertical adjustment. Both upper (fixed) and lower (retractable) sections of the column are constructed of 16-gauge stainless steel. Included within the column design are two removable service access panels, a stainless steel ceiling collar, and a heavy steel mounting plate. The mounting plate is furnished complete with connection points for four 3/4" diameter threaded rods, to be connected to an ownersupplied ceiling mounting structure. The retractable section of the column is powered by a 24V electrical actuator capable of stopping at any user-determined position within the vertical range. The control push buttons are located on the lower side of the movable section, with the option of an additional remote control panel mounted on an adjacent wall. The speed setting of the column is fixed at one inch per second. The upper section is available in various lengths, depending on ceiling height and customer specifications. The recommended clearance from the lower edge of the unit to the finished floor is 78" in the retracted position and 62" in the extended position (Figure 1). Figure 1. unpacking and inspection 1. Upon receipt of units and prior to unpacking, inspect shipping containers for damage. Document any damage found and notify the carrier and Modular Services Company. 2. Locate the carton for the unit you wish to install. Labels at each end of the carton identify the unit type and general description of contents, as well as the room number or area of installation (if applicable). 3. Unpack unit from shipping containers, taking care not to damage unit. 4. Verify that all components are included, according to the packing slip. NOTE: Ceiling height to be determined by customer. Ceiling Ceiling Height 13-1/2" (340 mm) 78" (1981 mm) Suggested Floor Clearance 17-5/16" (439.7 mm) 62" (1573 mm) Extended Ceiling Collar 6" (152.4 mm) Finished Floor Variable Length 5. Inspect units for defects in materials or workmanship prior to installation. It is the responsibility of the customer to report any damage or deficiencies to Modular Services immediately upon discovery. 2

3 Installation Figure 2 shows recommended locations of the Retractable Ceiling Column in an operating room. To facilitate access to the patient and traffic flow within the room, units should be placed approximately 3' 4' from the corners of the operating table. The Retractable Ceiling Column includes an upper rough-in riser plate which must be firmly attached to the building structure (Figure 3). The heavy-gauge steel plate is attached at each corner to the above ceiling support structure with four 3/4" diameter threaded rods. Support structure in ceiling is to be supplied by others (see Figures 4 and 5 for suggested means of support). After installation of the riser plate, the unit is attached by 1/2" diameter bolts to the mounting plate located at the top of the column. Figure 2. Recommended location of columns in sugery and special care areas. Access Panel Side 3' 4' ( cm) Operating Table 3' 4' ( cm) Access Panel Side Operating Room Medical Gas Connections Medical gas riser pipe stubs extend 6" above ceiling column. Medical gas outlets are pre-installed within the bottom faceplate of the column (Figure 6, positions 1 10) and are connected with flexible hoses to the top for final connection to the DISS riser connector pre-installed in the riser plate. Contractors are to provide the final connection to the hospital s medical gas piping system. Outlet quantities and locations are according to customer specifications, as indicated on submittal drawings. Connection of all outlets and devices between the upper and lower sections are made with flexible hoses for medical gas outlets and retractable cable for electrical devices. All DISS connections comply with NFPA 56F. Units are assembled and tested prior to shipping, and are UL approved. All component installation and testing complies with NFPA and/or National Electrical Code (NEC) and CSA Z Upon completion of all final site inspections, reinstall the access panels. Electrical Connections All electrical devices are pre-installed on the periphery of the column s telescopic section (Figure 6, positions A1 D5), and are terminated within the column in a junction box located above the ceiling level mounting plate. Wiring between devices and junction box uses 1/2" diameter captive cable. The junction box is accessible through a ceiling access panel (supplied by others). Electrical devices are furnished in quantities and locations according to customer specifications, as indicated on submittal drawings. To access components within the column, remove both access panels located on side A of the column (see Figure 6 for component locations). Electrical contractors are to provide the final connection to the hospital s electrical wiring circuits. The contractor has the responsibility to ensure that every column is subject to a final site inspection in compliance with all national, state and local codes. All electrical receptacles are UL listed, NEMA 5-20R, 125VAC, or NEMA 5-15R hospital-grade components. Electrical receptacles are red in color for emergency or ivory for normal power. See Figure 7 for schematic diagram. Care and Cleaning All outside surfaces of the column are made of either stainless steel or epoxy-coated paint. To clean, simply use a wet towel with a gentle soap. Never use steel wool or similar abrasive. A liquid stainless steel cleaner is recommended. 3
