1 The Building Envelope Company CORPORATE OVERVIEW

2 SOPREMA Since In 1908, Charles GEISEN founded the Alsatian Emulsion Factory, the forerunner of SOPREMA. His stroke of genius came when he began dipping jute cloth into hot bitumen. The result was a lightweight, solid, strong sheeting material which has been acknowledged by many as the first waterproofing membrane of modern history. SOPREMA was also the first manufacturer to develop factory-made, prefabricated roofing membranes. GEISEN called his product the MAMMOUTH membrane, French for Mammoth. During World War I, the business was moved several times. In 1933, Pierre GEISEN, the son of the founder, took over management of the company. His improvements to the MAMMOUTH membrane allowed the business to continue to grow. World War II forced the company to once again move, this time to Avignon, France. In this free zone Pierre GEISEN opened a new plant named SOciete des Produits et Revetements d Etancheite MAmmouth... SOPREMA was born. SOPREMA History Through the 1950 s, 60 s and 70 s, SOPREMA continued to grow through innovation and new product development. In 1972, the innovative Elastophene brand of SBS Modified Bitumen membrane was invented. In 1975, SOPREMA s state-of-the-art research laboratory developed Sopralene, the first line of SBS elastomeric bitumen membrane reinforced with polyester fleece. The growth of worldwide exports required the development of additional subsidiaries. In 1992, Pierre-Etienne BINDSCHEDLER, the grandson of Pierre GEISEN, took over management of the company. By this time, SOPREMA had manufacturing sites at multiple locations including Quebec, Canada and soon in Wadsworth, Ohio. SOPREMA was quickly becoming a worldwide leader in the roofing and waterproofing industry. The Building Envelope Company

6 Roofing The Heart of Soprema The History of Roofing Before 1970, the prevailing roofing system was Builtup Roofing (BUR) consisting of multiple plies of organic felt. After the energy crisis of the early 1970 s, the roofing market experienced dramatic changes resulting in the development of new roofing materials such as EPDM, PVC, TPO, Hypalon, and modified bitumen solutions including APP, SBS and SEBS among others. Mechanically Attached - Colphene Fix Braun Music Center, Stanford University - Stanford, California Why SBS... In the late 1960 s, Shell Chemical patented SBS Modified Bitumen by adding a polymer (SBS-Styrene Butadiene Styrene) to the bitumen. The addition of the SBS dramatically changed the physical makeup of the bitumen by absorbing oil, a major component of the bitumen, creating a three dimensional rubberized structure between the bitumen molecules. As a result, SBS Modified Bitumen roofing membranes possess these superior properties: SOPREMA Roofing Improved elongation Low temperature flexibility High elastic recovery High temperature resistance High compound stability Long-term aging Ease of application in cold temperatures It s the Reinforcement Fiberglass & Polyester SOPREMA utilizes both fiberglass and polyester as reinforcing mats in our SBS Modified Bitumen membranes. Polyester reinforcing mats possess superior elongation and tensile strength making them the preferred roofing membrane reinforcement. SOPREMA s patented manufacturing techniques allow for industry leading, high speed production of polyester reinforced roofing membrane resulting in a better cost structure for our customers. The superior strength of polyester has lead to SOPREMA s development of advanced, mechanically attached roofing systems that exceed current wind resistance standards. The Building Envelope Company
