2 SUPERIOR CAL-SHIELDS Features & Benefits FAST One-piece hinged construction Insulation, vapor barrier and G-90 galvanized steel shield in one unit. Butt-and-go Insulation extends beyond the steel shield for a neat and fast seal to the adjoining insulation material. Self-Sealing longitudinal lap Provides a positive seal against vapor migration over the full length of the unit. One model for either hot or cold systems Easy to order, eliminates potential application errors in the field. SUPERIOR True vapor barrier Critical on pipe operating below ambient air temperatures to eliminate condensation or saturation of the insulation material from water vapor. (Water-resistant treatments typically do not provide any protection from moisture in the air and/or high humidity conditions.) NOTE: Liquid-dipped shields for chilled water do not meet MSS and cannot be visually inspected for conformance. Water-proofing is not the same as vapor barrier. Precise Dimensions I.D.s correctly cut to fit copper tube as well as steel pipe. O.D.s to ASTM standards. One-half inch wall thickness available to 8 pipe, one inch wall thickness available up to 24 pipe size. Structural inserts of ultra high compressive strength material are standard on 10 pipe with one inch insulation and all pipe sizes 12 and larger. 100% American-made materials. Heavy gauge G-90 galvanized steel shields and asbestos-free insulation materials. Consistent quality throughout the Cal-Shield line. PROFESSIONAL Standard units meet or exceed most specifications. Units comply to MSS SP-58, paragraph 2.2 for a Type 40 shield with high compressive strength inserts. Custom units available to meet any engineer s requirements. SAVE Vapor barrier jacket matches the adjoining insulation for a neat, professional appearance. Cal-Shields are documented, and have consistent performance characteristics. Faster and easier installation lower installed cost. Eliminate expensive field fabrication and costly errors of omission. When adjusted as the pipe is hung, the grade is set no need for spacers or adjustments after the insulation is installed. Helps assure the use of correctly sized hangers and proper spacing between pipes. One-piece hinged construction, one model for either hot or cold pipe, fast and easy installation all add up to a lower installed cost over competitive models or field fabrication. 1

3 SUPERIOR CAL-SHIELDS Data Sheet DESCRIPTION/FEATURES Cal-Shields are 360º thermal hanger shields designed to meet the broadest range of pipe support applications. They provide a continuous section of insulation with an integral vapor barrier making them appropriate for a wide range of operating temperatures and pipe hanger systems. The insulation and vapor barrier extend beyond the galvanized steel shield for a neat, vapor-tight seal with the adjoining insulation. Cal-Shields are appropriate for use on systems operating between 20º and 1200º F. (-6º to +648º C). They may be used in conjunction with band-type hangers, on flat surfaces or properly sized roller-type supports. To assure superior support on larger pipe sizes, 450 PSI structural inserts are included on units for 10 pipe with one-inch insulation and all units for pipe sizes 12 and larger. APPLICATIONS For indoor use on clamping support systems, flat surfaces, clevis or other band-type hangers. May be used on roller-type supports where pipe travel is +/- 1/3 the shield length. Chilled to steam piping and dual temperature lines. Hanger spans per MSS SP-69, Table 5. 1/2 inch wall thickness available to 8 pipe size, 1 wall thickness to 24 pipe size. All pipe sizes to 4 wall thickness. MATERIALS/CONSTRUCTION 140 PSI calcium silicate meeting ASTM C-533, C-585, C-795, E-84, Flame Spread -0-, Smoke Developed -0-. Adhesive complying to NFPA 90-A, ASTM E-84, Flame Spread -10-, Smoke Developed -0-. G-90 Galvanized steel shield, small check per ASTM A-527. Vapor barrier of all-service jacket meeting ASTM D-774, D-828 and E-84, Flame Spread -5-, Smoke Developed -5-. Structural inserts (standard for 12 pipe and larger) minimum 450 PSI meeting ASTM C-533, C-795, E-84, Flame Spread -0-, Smoke Developed -0-. 4 SETTING THE STANDARD OBJECTIVE Establish guidelines for standard lengths of thermal pipe hanger supports. PROBLEM Virtually every mechanical specification calls for some type of thermal hanger shield to protect and maintain the insulation system integrity at each point of support. Descriptions of this type of product vary widely throughout the industry. The most frequently referenced documents are published by the Manufacturers Standardization Society or MSS. Their SP-58 and SP-69 publications reference Type 40 thermal hanger shields as falling into two categories: those without high density inserts and those manufactured with high density, high compressive strength inserts. The MSS documents recommend that when thermal hanger shields are used with high compressive strength inserts, two issues be specifically addressed: 1 That the shield length and thickness be appropriate for the compressive strength of the insert material. 2 Where a vapor barrier is required, that it extend beyond the steel shield and overlap the circumference of the insert. DESIGN Lord and Sons Superior Cal-Shields utilize the industry s finest materials for our inserts with compressive strengths ranging from 160 PSI to 450 PSI setting the standard for insulated pipe supports. The galvanized steel shields range from a minimum 22 gauge (.0376 ) to 14 gauge (.0865 ), with a G-90 grade galvanization, surpassing normal corrosion resistance requirements. Every Superior Cal-Shield includes an integral vapor barrier of Compac Corporations FB400MPC (metallized polyesterin) jacket. Unlike water-resistant treatments that allow water vapor to penetrate the surface of the calcium silicate and potentially saturate the entire insulation system, Superior Cal-Shields are completely enclosed and sealed with a visually verifiable, true vapor barrier. This vapor barrier jackets characteristics exceed the specifications of the jacket used on the adjoining fiberglass insulation once again setting the standard for insulated pipe supports. Due to the preferred design of Superior Cal-Shields, all units are appropriate for either hot or cold systems. They are easy to order, simple to install, have a naturally hinged, one-piece construction, and are in a word Superior. 3

5 LOAD-BEARING CHARACTERISTICS The allowable loads shown in the table below were derived by extensive destructive testing at the Johns Manville Technical Center in Littleton, Colorado. Tests were performed on a state-of-the-art Inston Series IX testing system to ASTM C165, Method A standards. The allowable loads relate directly to the spans of pipe between hangers. In addition, one must take into account increased loads from valves, fittings or other attachments to the pipe which may increase the actual weight on the system. Superior Cal-Shields may be used to MSS SP-69, Table 5 maximums for steel pipe or copper tube, water service. Note: Allowable loads are based on pipes mounted in standard clevis or band type hangers. When pipe is mounted on pipe rollers care must be taken to correctly size the rollers to accommodate the pipe diameter plus the insulation wall thickness. Additional weight distribution plates may be required and are available upon request. 4
