SUDS Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS), are management practices and physical structures designed to drain surface water in a more sustainable way than conventional systems. Many existing urban drainage systems cause problems of flooding, pollution or damage to the environment and are not sustainable. Elders practice Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUDS) and consider long term environmental and social factors when designing drainage. We aim to: Manage runoff flow rates, reducing the impact of urbanisation on flooding Protect or enhance water quality Be sympathetic to the environmental setting and the needs of the local community Provide a habitat for wildlife in urban watercourses Where appropriate encourage natural groundwater recharge

FEATURE PROJECTS: STRUCTURAL Marrion House, near Dunbar Project Value : 750K A new single storey house built on both sides of the stone wall of a walled garden. The existing out buildings and cottage on the one side of the old stone wall were extensively altered and the existing red sand stone wall had to be underpinned in areas where the foundation stones were found to be shallow. A 6m wide opening was also created in the wall at ceiling level for the entrance area. The living area has exposed rafters with steel tie rods. California, near Falkirk Project Value : 800K The Structural division are involved as project managers and designers for the infrastructure works to create 46 house plots on a site near Falkirk. A desk top survey and site investigation was carried out which revealed shallow coal mine workings and a land fill site. The Planning Authority, Transport Authority, Scottish Water and SEPA were consulted on the new road layout and Sustainable Urban Drainage System for the surface water drainage. The Public Utilities have been co-ordinated to provide all services for each house plot.

FEATURE PROJECTS: STRUCTURAL Chemical Biology, Kings Buildings Campus, University of Project Value : 4.5m A phased refurbishment within the original existing Chemistry Department Building to provide new teaching and research facilities. The original steel structures were within enclosed courtyard areas and were replaced to form new open plan laboratories and create new plant rooms, one of which has been located on top of an existing two storey building. EPIC / NMR Facilities, Kings Buildings Campus, University of Project Value : 4.0m Refurbishment of part of an existing brick and steel building to provide a state of the art facility to house an 800 MHz magnet system and three Mass Spectrometers. The nature of these instruments and their controlled environments meant that no ferrous metal could be present within a given zone centred on the instruments. The existing steel roof structure was therefore removed and replaced with timber trusses fabricated using stainless steel fasteners. Replacement of the existing reinforced concrete floor also took place. Renovation works to adjacent rooms were also carried out to create smaller laboratory areas.

FEATURE PROJECTS: STRUCTURAL New Roxburghe House, Aberdeen Project Value : 4.0m A new-build project to provide health care services for cancer patients in a non-institutional type environment. The steel framed structure is mainly of single storey construction with a two storey central core section supporting a precast concrete first floor. New Chemistry Building, Kings Buildings Campus, University of Project Value : 7.6m A new-build project to provide teaching and research laboratories for the Chemistry Department. The works included demolition of a small temporary building, enabling works and the construction of a new four storey steel building braced with the aid of composite concrete floors with internal reinforced concrete shear walls. The internal metal stud paritions are non-load bearing and their positions can be altered in the future without major disruption. The project includes the surrounding hard standing and landscape areas.

FEATURE PROJECTS: STRUCTURAL Building and Feasibility Surveys The Structural Division have carried out numerous building condition surveys. Our most recent commissions relate to the Filmhouse in and Chalmers Hospital in Banff. We have also carried out a feasibility survey for Bonar Teich in Dundee to assess options for the future development of their thin-film printing facilities to meet supply requirements for national and international food retailers. Affleck Centre and Young Persons Unit, Royal Hospital Project Value : 7.0m Two new-build projects to replace existing facilities and provide residential accommodation for vulnerable client groups in a medium security environment. The structure of both buildings were similar with steel frame two storey sections flanked by single storey timber construction with timber roof trusses. The Structural Division were involved as Design Engineers for the timber truss and stud wall manufacturer for areas which included complicated frame connections which required in depth design.
