6 HOW TO LAY RETAINING WALLS Austral Masonry s Palm Retaining Wall Blocks are an ideal choice for retaining walls in gardens and other residential applications. The interlocking and dry stacked nature of the Palm blocks, makes them easy to install for the Do It Yourself landscaper. The result is an attractive and low maintenance wall. The fl exibility of the system provides tremendous scope for the garden designer, from edging to terraces, straight walls to curves. Note: For commercial projects, terraced walls, fences above walls, walls in clay or fi ne sands, walls in areas subject to water run-off, walls over 800mm high and other specialised applications, engineering and/or council guidelines will need to be followed. Please consult with regulating council for local design requirements prior to the commencement of any retaining wall. Councils may request walls over 0.5m in height and / or where a surcharge exists (e.g. driveway, house, fence or other structure) be designed and certifi ed by a suitably qualifi ed consulting engineer. Your Checklist String line Shovel Pegs or stakes Mitre saw (to cuts blocks if req d) Tape measure Spirit level Broom 10-20mm Crushed stone (back fill) Walling units Wheel barrow Gloves & eye protection Crushed rock (for base) Compaction Tool Agriculture Drain Pipe Geogrid Estimating materials Calculate number of Palm blocks required No. blocks high Length of wall (metres) 2m 4m 6m 8m 10m 12m 1 course courses courses courses Calculating Block Quantities Example wall 10m long x 4 courses high = (3.3 block per lineal metre) x 10m= 33 blocks per course 4 courses high x 33 blocks per course = 132 blocks in total Please Note: Capping Blocks should be included in the overall size of the wall. Blocks required for complete job = 99 Palm Blocks + 33 Palm Capping Blocks Maximum height of a Palm wall including capping block is four courses (800mm). Step 1: Permits Check with your local council to ensure all local Building Codes are complied with. Step 2: Footings Use a string line to mark out the desired shape of the wall. Dig a trench for the footing approximately 600mm wide and 300mm deep. Fill with 200mm of fi ne crushed rock (FCR) and compact well. Spread 25mm of bedding sand onto the FCR and level across the footing. To determine how much fi ll is required, measure the length, depth, and width of footing (all in metres). CALCULATION OF VOLUME Length x Depth x Width = Volume Example: footing is 10m long, 0.2m deep and 0.6m wide. 10m x 0.2m x 0.6m = 1.2m3 of crushed stone required 6 Austral Masonry

7 Step 3: First Course The fi rst row of the retaining blocks can now leveled into the bedding sand. Ensure at least half of the block (100mm) is below the ground level. Use a string line and spirit level to make sure the blocks are completely square. The blocks should be laid with the lugs facing up. Step 4: Drainage and Back Fill Using a 1:100 fall, place a PVC mm ag-pipe behind the fi rst course. Backfill using 10-20mm of drainage gravel (eg. blue metal) for approximately 300mm behind the wall. Fill the blocks with drainage gravel as well for added strength. Backfi ll after every course is laid. Step 5: Laying Additional Courses and Capping Using a string line to keep the wall straight and making sure the top of each block is clean, continue laying courses and backfi lling. Lay a capping block (tapered or straight) with the solid side up to complete the fi nal course. Step 6: Finishing off the Wall A layer of compacted clay approximately mm high and 300mm wide should be used to seal off the drainage gravel. It is important to ensure that dirt or fi ne particles can not enter the drainage gravel. Care must be taken when compacting to ensure there is no movement of the blocks themselves. Warning Corners Steps Vehicle and machinery traffi c should be allowed no closer than one metre behind the wall. Corners are built by adhesively fixing mitered blocks or capping blocks. Steps can be easily built using a combination of Palm blocks and Palm capping blocks. The step risers are built with Palm blocks, the capping blocks are then adhered to the top of the blocks to form the treads. Retaining Walls Palm TM 7
