1 SECTION (00041) SPECIAL INSPECTIONS PART 1 GUIDELINES As defined by the IBC 2003, Section 1704, Special Inspections of materials, installation, fabrication, erection of components and connections requiring special expertise to ensure compliance with the construction documents are required. Special inspections may include: structural steel framing, welding, concrete, masonry wall panels & veneers, or sprayed on fire-resistant materials. Special Inspections for the following may also be required for Seismic Resistance in compliance with IBC 2003, Section and Special Inspections for seismic resistance. 1. The seismic-force-resisting systems in structures assigned to Seismic Design Category C, D, E or F, as determined in section Designated seismic systems in structures assigned to Seismic Design Category D,E or F. 3. Architectural, mechanical and electrical components in structures assigned to Seismic Design Category C, D, E or F that are required in Sections and Structural steel 1. Continuous special inspections for structural welding in accordance with AISC 341. At the beginning of each project, the architect/engineer should review the project scope to determine if and what construction activities require special inspections and bring to the WUSM project managers attention. The architect should review all questionable areas with the building official/ Authority Having Jurisdiction. The owner or the registered design professional in responsible charge acting as the owner s agent shall employ one or more special inspectors to provide inspections during construction on the types of work listed under Section Exception: Special Inspections are not required on projects with work of a minor nature or as warranted by conditions in the jurisdiction as approved by the building official. PART 2 CONTRACT DOCUMENT GUIDELINES The registered design professional in responsible charge shall prepare a statement of special inspections to be submitted by the permit applicant. The statement shall include a complete list of materials and work requiring special inspections, the special inspections to be performed and a list of the individuals, approved agencies or firms intended to be retained for conducting such inspections (See attached Tables). PART 3 EXECUTION The owner or registered design professional shall seek competitive bids (minimum of 3 bids required) from the WUSM approved testing agencies master list for the professional services. The special inspector(s) shall be qualified who shall demonstrate competence, to satisfy the building official, for inspection of the particular type of construction or operation requiring special inspection. Acceptable Special Inspection Agencies: Geotechnology, Inc SSE Reitz PSI Shannon & Wilson END OF SECTION SPECIAL INSPECTIONS
