7 BASIC TYPES OF FUME HOODS SASH OPEN SASH CLOSED SASH OPEN SASH CLOSED AIR BY-PASS The By-Pass Hood is designed in such a manner that closing the front sash causes a redistribution of the air entering the hood through the sash opening, eliminating high velocity air streams in the near closed position of the sash. The By-Pass opening above the sash minimizes fluctuations in face velocity as the sash is raised or lowered. The By-Pass Hood is more desirable for use with fragile apparatus and instrumentation since face velocity does reach levels which might be detrimental to experimentation. AUXILIARY INDUCED AIR The Add-Air Hood provides a means of introducing outside air to the hood exhaust and limits the percentage of room air exhausted from the laboratory. The Add-Air Hood requires a separate duct system for the introduction of the outside air directly to the fume hood, and an additional blower system for this ductwork. The Add-Air Hood offers a convenient means of supplying up to 50% of the exhaust capacity of the hood with untempered air. When outside temperatures are extreme, we recommend that the Add-Air supply be tempered.
