3 Steel Beam Guide Rail Steel beam guide rail shall be according to OPSS Channel components shall be according to OPSS Wood posts and blocks shall be according to OPSS Steel sleeves and spacer tubes used in transition treatments to concrete structures shall be fabricated from Schedule 40 galvanized steel pipe. Steel posts, sleeves, and spacer tubes shall be hot dipped galvanized after fabrication according to CAN/CSA G164M. Steel posts shall be according to ASTM A 36M Fabricated Steel Bases Fabricated steel bases shall be according to OPSS Concrete Concrete shall be according to OPSS 1350 with a nominal minimum 28 day compressive strength of 30 MPa CONSTRUCTION General Guide rail shall be installed plumb, and set according to alignment and grade, regardless of the material encountered. The tops of the wooden posts shall be cut as specified. The cut tops of the pressure treated posts shall be treated with two coats of 2% copper napthenate wood preservative. Field applied wood preservative which comes in contact with any galvanized components shall be removed immediately. Acceptable material from post hole or anchor block excavation shall be used as backfill around posts and shall be thoroughly compacted according to OPSS 501. Reflectors shall be fastened to the guide rail posts at the height and spacing specified in the Contract Documents. Fabricated steel bases shall be installed level and square to the centre line of roadway to ensure a plumb post. Cut ends, field drilled holes, and damaged areas of hot dip galvanized coatings on any galvanized component shall be repaired according to ASTM A 780 at no additional cost to the Owner. Flame cutting shall not be permitted. Page 3 Rev. Date: 11/2002 OPSS 552

4 Cable Guide Rail The work shall consist of the installation of cable guide rail posts, fabricated steel bases where applicable, cables, and reflectors as specified in the Contract Documents. Wood posts shall be installed to the specified depth with the larger end of the post in the ground. Cable shall be attached to the guide rail posts using cable clamps and nail fasteners. Cable mounting height shall be measured from the top of final shoulder grade at the post face. The cable height shall be adjusted to provide a smooth installation. Cables shall be tensioned so that the sag between posts shall not exceed 6 mm. Cable splices occurring on the same cable shall be spaced greater than 15 m apart. There shall be only one cable splice per panel regardless of the number of cables in system Anchor Blocks The work shall consist of the installation of concrete anchor blocks including any excavation required to place precast or cast-in-place cubical or cylindrical blocks, regardless of the material encountered. In porous or crumbly soil, forms for cast-in-place anchors shall be used to prevent contamination of the concrete. Forms may be left in place or removed. Except for slip forms, forms that shall be removed shall not be removed until the concrete has set sufficiently to prevent deformation of the concrete. Rigid steel slip forms may be used provided the voids around the slip forms are backfilled and compacted prior to form removal. Earth backfill and granular materials shall be compacted according to OPSS Adjust Cable Guide Rail The work shall consist of the removal of the staples and spacers, or cable clamps and nails, and the removal and salvage of all the cables from the existing guide rail posts according to OPSS 510, and their reinstallation at the new cable height with new cable clamps and nail fasteners on the existing posts Steel Beam Guide Rail The work shall consist of installing steel beam guide rail including steel beam guide rail elements, fabricated steel bases, steel channel where applicable, posts, and associated hardware. Each steel beam guide rail installation may incorporate either steel posts with routed wood blocks, or wood posts and blocks but not both. Wood posts shall only be allowed with the steel posts installations where wood posts are specified for guide rail end treatments. Extension of an existing wood post installation with steel posts shall only be allowed where the extension length is greater than 100 m. Where a transition to a rigid obstacle is required, the offset block for the channel may be either wood or a pipe sleeve over the connecting bolt. The pipe sleeve shall be an 89 mm OD galvanized steel pipe cut to the required length. Backup plate, steel spacer tube, and pipe sleeve shall be installed as specified in the Contract Documents. All joints shall be lapped in the direction of traffic. Page 4 Rev. Date: 11/2002 OPSS 552

5 Bolts shall be tightened to 100 N m. Bolts for wood post installations shall be field cut as required to maintain a maximum protrusion of 10 mm beyond the nut. The cut end of the bolt shall be ground smooth with all sharp edges and burrs removed Steel Beam Guide Rail Structure Connections The work shall consist of connecting the guide rail system to new or existing structure walls as specified in the Contract Documents Adjust Steel Beam Guide Rail The work shall consist of the removal and salvage of the offset blocks, steel beam elements, channels, bolts and washers from the existing guide rail posts, and their reinstallation at the new steel beam element height on the existing posts as specified in the Contract Documents. Washers from the front face of the existing steel beam guide rail are not to be reinstalled. The minimum adjustment in height shall be 50 mm and the top of the offset block shall not extend beyond the top of the existing post Management and Disposal of Excess Material Management and disposal of excess material shall be according to OPSS MEASUREMENT FOR PAYMENT Actual Measurement Cable Guide Rail Measurement shall be made along the centre line of the system in metres from centre of anchor block to centre of anchor block for each installation. No additions shall be made for the overlapping length of cable at intermediate anchor blocks Adjust Cable Guide Rail Measurement shall be made along the centre line of the system in metres from centre of anchor block to centre of anchor block for each installation. No additions shall be made for the overlapping length of cable at intermediate anchor blocks Anchor Blocks For measurement purposes, a count shall be made of the anchor blocks installed Steel Beam Guide Rail Measurement shall be made along the centre line of the system in metres from end to end of each steel beam guide rail installation.
