1 June 2017 Dear Incoming Third Grade Students and Parents, Welcome to Third Grade! We are excited to have you in our classes in the fall and we want you to begin the school year with many skills and strategies to be successful. That is why Mary of Nazareth requires that you continue to work on the IXL math and language arts skill sets that you have been engaged with during this school year. This year Mary of Nazareth School is requiring that all students practice their learning skills by completing the identified objectives of the IXL math and language arts from their current grade level and complete the attached Reading projects. The IXL math and language arts skill objectives have been identified for you based on what has been taught in those classes, your identified student learning objectives from the May Scantron assessments, and the expectations for the beginning of the school year. Your work will count as your first quiz grade in math and language arts; the more objectives you do, the higher your grade. In addition to the IXL review, the third grade teachers are asking that you do the following reading projects: 1. On September 15, 2017 the award winning, Maryland author Priscilla Cummings will be visiting Mary of Nazareth. In preparation for her visit, all of the rising second and third grade students are asked to purchase her book Chadwick Forever, Save our Endangered Friends (about $9.00 on Amazon). You may need an adult to read this book with you. We ask that you complete the attached graphic organizer as groundwork for some fantastic science and literature activities during the first weeks of school. 2. The teachers would like you to read the hilarious book Freckle Juice by Judy Blume, This book can be found at the public library, Barnes & Noble, or on Amazon (about $3.00). We hope this book becomes a family favorite. To begin our school year, the teachers have planned many creative activities and lessons that bring this book to life! We know that the students will really enjoy what is in store for them in early September. 3. The teachers would like you to select at least one other novel to read and create a poster about a book that you have read over the summer. Please read the attached rubric. Your reading teacher will be giving you feedback and a homework pass for your efforts. Remember, your poster will be displayed for everyone to view during Back to School Night. Our goal is to provide you with some interesting activities that will keep your reading, grammar, and math skills sharp and will get you ready for third grade. But remember to pray daily, go to Mass, have fun, play outside, and have a wonderful vacation! Have a blessed and peaceful summer! The Third Grade Team

2 Incoming Third Grade Summer 2017 Reading Projects Welcome to Third Grade! The students are being asked to complete the following reading tasks: 1. Try to read everyday for at least 20 minutes. The time-spent reading should be relaxing and will help you to be better prepared for third grade. See how many books you can read over the summer! 2. In preparation for our author s visit please purchase and read (with adult help) Chadwick Forever and complete the attached graphic organizer. Remember to bring the book to school on September 15 so the author can sign it. 3. The teachers are requiring that you read Freckle Juice by Judy Blume. Please remember to bring your book to school on the first day of school and be prepared for our fun activities. 4. Choose another chapter book (Not Freckle Juice or Chadwick) that you would like to read. We hope that you will read lots of books and tell us all about those books when we see you in September. Pick one of the free choice books that you have read over the summer make an informative and colorful poster about that book. Your poster will be displayed in the hallway; therefore, it is to be no bigger than 14 x 22 a half sheet of poster paper. Please do not use foam-core boards because they cannot be easily hung on concrete block. The poster must have the book title and author, as well as illustrations about the story, main characters, and your favorite scene (you can draw pictures, cut out pictures, print pictures, or use photographs). Please put your name on the front of your poster. Type (size 16 font) one paragraph, about 100 words, about your book. You can write a summary or you can write about your favorite part of the book. Glue your paragraph to your poster for everyone to read Be creative with your ideas and materials! The poster is due Thursday, September 7, 2017.

3 Pick one animal from Chadwick Forever and try to learn a few details to share with the class. To begin the school year we will be talking about the animals of the Chesapeake Bay.
