2 The Brazilian government acknowledges the strategic value of the International Meat Secretariat OPIC. I cannot fail to mention the efforts made some 15 years ago to encourage trade associations to take part in IMS/OPIC and set up trading relations. IMS/OPIC has certainly helped to show Brazil to the rest of the world. Argentina has always been present in IMS/OPIC and once more gives us the opportunity to be here in this beautiful city, enjoying the company of friends, and, more importantly, strengthening the ties of friendship and cooperation. 2

3 Brazil has a dynamic meat industry with a large number of agents. The chain mobilizes important assets, with global brands, global companies, global conglomerates, pension funds, investment funds and stockholders in many countries. 7 DENSITY BOVINE HERD Brazil s Amazon region stretches out over 3,581 km2, accounting for 42.07% of the country The Legal Amazon region is still larger, covering 60% of the Brazil with a total five million km2. It encompasses the States of Amazonas, Acre, Amapá, western Maranhão, Mato Grosso, Rondônia, Pará, Roraima and Tocantins The Amazon region is home to 33% of the planet s tropical forests and roughly 30% of all known species of flora and fauna Ecological region map of Amazon. 17 Programa Boi Guardião Guardian Animal program Based on the use of satellite monitoring images, georeferenced farm information and electronic GTAs Animal Movement Permits. In order for electronic GTAs to work efficiently the georeferencing register of issuing units must be up-to-date, there must be permanent access to the Internet, and the unit must have sufficient equipment to allow all GTAs to be issued on-line. Need to enhance inspection at border inspection posts and feedback from the posts to Adepará and MAPA by means of the electronic GTA system.

22 Low Carbon Agriculture Program (Agricultura de Baixo Carbono-ABC) Volume of resources: R$ 2.0 billion (1st year) Beneficiaries: Breeders and their cooperatives Limit per beneficiary: R$ 1 million; Interest rate: 5.5 % per annum. Repayment deadline: up to 12 years. Financed activities: introduction and expansion of agriculture-livestock integration systems or crop-livestock-forestry integration systems; Recovery of degraded pastures; Introduction and maintenance of commercial forestry; Recovery of conservation areas or legal reserves;

25 The Program aims to recover 15 million hectares of degraded pasture, through the introduction of suitable management practices and fertilization, which is expected to enable an increase in the stocking capacity of these pastures from the current 0.4 animal units per hectare to 0.9 animal units per (AU/ha). This is expected to result in a reduction from 83 to 104 million tonnes of CO 2 by 2020.

28 The Crop-Livestock-Forestry (ilpf) and Agriforestry includes four types of integration system: 1. CROP-LIVESTOCK (Agri-pastoral) 2. LIVESTOCK-FORESTRY (Silvi-pastoral) 3. CROP-FORESTRY (Silvi-agricultural) 4. CROP-LIVESTOCK-FORESTRY (Agri-silvi-pastoral) Systems strategy

29 The Program aims to introduce CLF systems in 4 million hectares, equivalent to a reduction of 18 to 28 million tonnes of CO 2 eq.

36 The Program aims to promote reforestation throughout Brazil, expanding the reforested area currently dedicated to the production of fiber, wood and cellulose from 6.0 million hectares to 9.0 million hectares, helping reduce by 8 to 10 million tonnes of CO 2 eq.

39 Fall in Deforestation According to The Economist, from 1996 to 2005, approximately 19,500 km² of Brazilian Amazon forest was felled each year. This area was dramatically reduced to approximately 7,000 km² from 2008 to 2009 This was due to: The demarcation of all indigenous areas, the setting-up of National Parks and areas for growing timber, and stricter enforcement actions to fight illegal logging, with tighter satellite surveillance of deforestation. Map of deforestation in Brazilian Amazonia, published in August Source: Imazon / Agência Brasil We expect to reduce deforestation by 80% by 2020, and in light of recent results, many politicians are already saying that deforestation will cease by 2030, or at least be reversed.
