1 What the project does The project supports projects within the Federation Humana People to People that are interested in participating in an action to plant millions of trees during There are many good reasons to support such activities, not only due to the role trees have in mitigating Global people and nature get from having trees. BELIZE: 26,000 trees planted Facts Started in September 2013 and ended in July Implemented by 14 associations within the Federation Academy at St Vincent. Funded by The GAIA-Movement through donations from The GAIA-Movement Living Earth Green World Action USA, Inc. and Green World Recycling Ltd. The projects in Belize collected some of the seeds for their actions from trees in the forests as can be seen in the photo at the top. Other trees were not local, but anyway useful trees such as moringas grown for their highly nutritious leaves. A group of children are here being instructed in how to grow these from cuttings. 2 BOTSWANA: 23,000 trees BRAZIL: 180,000 trees / cactus The trees were planted through actions in 8 communities. In Topisi Village the local chief mobilized many people to participate in the treeplanting by telling them how trees were needed since the area was no longer receiving the rains it used to get. The seedlings were produced in 6 communities by volunteers with support from HPP Brazil. The planting was carried out by a core group of 30 volunteers together with people from the communities. A mobile exhibition was set up at every place to explain about the importance of trees and Global Warming. THE GAIA-MOVEMENT / ANNUAL REPORT 13

4 GUINEA BISSAU: 191,000 trees INDIA: 809,000 trees planted The trees have been planted at 55 schools, by farmers organized in Farmers Clubs and by a number of other families. Many of the trees were planted during a 5-day action involving 575 people, which was combined with campaigns about Global Warming. A number of people planted jatrophas to provide live fences as shown in the bottom photo. Humana People to People India projects planted trees together with more than 100,000 people in 6 states at teacher training colleges, in Farmers Clubs, Community Development Projects, together with women self-help groups and many more. 5 MALAWI: 1,293,000 trees MOZAMBIQUE: 1,780,000 trees DAPP (Development Aid from People to People) Malawi has a solid tradition of treeplanting especially by the farmers in their Farmers Clubs and families in the Child Aid projects, who have planted million of trees during the last years. As one can clearly see from the bottom photo showing a group carrying seedlings for planting, there is a great need for more trees in Malawi. Thousands of Mozambicans were out planting trees many were invited to a plant trees in the Community Forest, only to discover that this was barren land. But the action changed this and the many local people were not in doubt that they would take care of their future forest. THE GAIA-MOVEMENT / ANNUAL REPORT 16

6 LAOS: 162,000 trees NAMIBIA: 48,000 trees The forests of Laos are disappearing fast, with the valuable hardwood trees being cut down. People in the villages are therefore very interested in planting new trees for house construction and but new seeds were then collected in the forests, and they are now being taken well care of. previously had extensive growth of mopane trees, but most of these have disappeared. DAPP (Development Aid from People to People) and many people have now been involved in the actions not only of planting the trees but also taking care that they survive. 7 SOUTH AFRICA: 92,000 trees St. VINCENT: 11,000 trees Many communist activists have been mobilized to take care of the seedlings and the planted trees. A number of trees that can safely be planted in other countries will have therefore been collected and used in the tree planting action. of it has a healthy tree-cover, there is a need for more trees. 8 ZAMBIA: 1,122,000 trees ZIMBABWE: 1,597,000 trees The Forestry Department donated many of the trees that DAPP Zambia planted during their actions, but thousands of seedlings were also produced at the projects and by families. A number of Zambian farmers have planted msangu trees which can be grown in Many Zimbabwean smallholder farmers have started tobacco This has resulted in increased deforestation.
