1 International Timber CLEAR SOFTWOOD The Westernmost of Canada s provinces, British Columbia along with the U.S states of Washington and Oregon known as the Pacific Northwest harvest mainly Clear softwoods such as, and Western Red Cedar. This region especially B.C. is a largely a resource based economy and is the end point of transcontinental highways and railways and the site of major Pacific ports which enable international trade in many of the natural harvested products of the region. As a result of Kuroshio Current (also known as the Japan Current), which crosses the North Pacific Ocean, coastal British Columbia has a mild, rainy oceanic climate. Due to the blocking presence of successive mountain ranges, the interior of the province has a semi-arid climate with certain locations receiving less than 250 mm (10 ) in annual precipitation. The annual mean temperature in the most populated areas of the province are above 10 C (50 F), the mildest anywhere in Canada. Timbers from this region are now enjoyed throughout the world with many species now under good governance with COC schemes set in place to take advantage of the world s environmental needs. Further south and east in the states of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Georgia harvesting of Southern ellow Pine provides another clear softwood for domestic and export markets, the warm climate found in these states provides a continuous growing cycle which enables product to grow to allow clear cutting of much larger raw material. As well as clear softwoods from British Colombia, International Timber offer Siberian Larch, an extremely durable species and virtually clear of defects in the better grades available. It is increasingly being used in the joinery and construction sector. Siberian Larch has outstanding qualities that provide a durability normally only found in hardwood. It is particularly noted for its dense grain structure and resinous composition. For a softwood timber it is extremely slow-growing and is responsibly harvested. For centuries, the unique performance of structures built out of Siberian Larch lead to Siberian Larch being described by many as The Tree of Eternity. Some buildings and churches in Russia have been estimated to be in excess of 800 years old. Perhaps the most famous example of its longevity and durability is its use in the construction of the ancient city of Venice. Due to its proximity to Europe, Siberian Larch has enabled Europeans to take advantage of this material notably since the dissolution of the former Soviet Union. Architects from around the world are now specifying the use of larch in the construction of residential homes and commercial spaces such as schools, museums, stadiums, and bridges. Finding a reliable supplier with the necessary expertise to process Siberian Larch has been the challenge for some but International Timber are proud to be able to offer our customers Siberian Larch in rough sawn or finished specifications

2 Contents CEDAR - western red Product No. 2 Clear (Para 401). No. 4 Clear, Factory Flitch, Select Merchantable. Stocked Environmental No2 Clear Green PIne - southern yellow 177 siberian larch 178 BOTANICAL NAME PHSICAL/STRUCTURAL Thuja plicata Its light weight and soft timber contributes to low strength properties and compared with European redwood (Pinus sylvestris) it is some 20 to 30 per cent inferior in bending strength, and about 15 per cent less stiff. It is also much less resistant to splitting and indentation on side grain than redwood DENSIT 390 kg/m A tree of the northern Rocky Mountains and Pacific North-west; its full range extends from Alaska southwards to California, and eastwards along many of the interior ranges of British Columbia, northern Washington, Idaho and Montana to the western slope of the continental divide DRING 170 Code 3 Thin sizes dry readily with little degrade, but the timber generally tends to hold its moisture at the centre and care is needed with thick stock to avoid internal honeycombing and collapse. The timber holds its position well after drying with practically no tendency to warp and check while movement due to shrinking and swelling in changing atmospheres is small Durable, FSC (very limited) MOISTURE CONTENT KD 13-19% : AD 50%+ Canada, North West USA PURCHASING CCLE Green stock outside, KD stock under cover TPICAL APPLICATIONS Cladding, Decking, Joinery - Exterior, Greenhouse Manufacturing Good - The timber works easily with both hand and machine tools, but its relatively brittle nature, which can cause splintering during some operations, and its soft character, which can lead to chip-bruising, usually means that care is needed in order to obtain the best results during mortising, planing and moulding. A good finish can be obtained, but cutters must be kept sharpened S x 5" S x 6" S x 4" S x 6" S x 8" S x 4" 8' S x 4" 10' S x 4" 12' S x 6" S x 4" S x 6" S x 4" S x 5" S x 6" S x 8" S x 10" S x 12" S x 6" S x 6" + S x 6" + S x 6" + S DURABILIT.625 x 4" Continued... Drying degrade is generally confined to surface checking, splitting and loosening of knots, and splitting in the vicinity of knots. Accordingly, stock from trees grown in the UK and in Europe when dried from the green state, needs care, particularly because of the generally higher preponderance of knots which are hard, often loose, and which encourage more wavy grain than in imported stock 1.25" S " S " S x 8"+ S " S x 8" S "+ S x 8"+ S " S No.2/3 Clear and Better (85/15) H.T.
