Overview Virginia Burkett, USGS, GFOI.ORG GFOI1

What is GFOI? Partnership for coordinating the delivery of international support on forest monitoring & GHG accounting for REDD+ and related GFOI.ORG GFOI1 2

GFOI Partners Founded under the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) in 2011 First work plan was Review in 2016 led to development of Phase 2 Lead partners: currently Australia, CEOS, ESA, FAO, Norway, UK, USA, & the World Bank Many other contributor including UNFCCC, IPCC, universities, technical and policy experts Open to new GFOI.ORG GFOI1 3

GFOI Goals Provide REDD+ countries with a larger and more targeted package of support than any one international partner can provide alone Enable consistency or complementarity in support Ensure support is targeted at country needs to help accelerate progress towards reporting and action Foster a network of experts to help address challenges and bottlenecks to progress Facilitate exchanges resources, comparative advantages, south-south collaboration and enable learning between partners Avoid overlaps and duplication of effort by developing countries and international GFOI.ORG GFOI1 4

Four GFOI.ORG GFOI1 5

3 pillars of GFOI.ORG GFOI1

GFOI and Paris Agreement The role of forests under the Paris Agreement is clear Limiting global warming to 2 degrees very difficult without significant mitigation from forests Reducing emissions from deforestation, forest degradation and related activities (REDD+) is a key mechanism for emissions mitigation The UNFCCC s Warsaw Framework on REDD+, linked to Paris Agreement, outlines the structure of REDD+ Countries need to establish National Forest Monitoring Systems (NFMS) for emissions Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) GFOI.ORG GFOI1 7

GFOI and Paris Agreement GFOI is supporting countries to develop NFMS for REDD+ MRV and related purposes NFMS generate information on forests and associated GHG emissions to enable developing countries to: Track progress in implementing their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement Generate information to inform decision making and policy development of responsible interventions to reduce GHG emissions Provides confidence in REDD+ activities and key feature for accessing performance based payments Co-benefits: supports land use planning, tenure and other GFOI.ORG GFOI1 8

Progress to date Through the collaborative action of its partners, GFOI has: Assembled a network of world leading partners who help implementing countries on forest monitoring & MRV issues Published implementation friendly guidance which comply with the IPCC Built technical capacity in countries Facilitated wall-to-wall coverage of the world s forests from multiple satellite sensors Established network of experts to address obstacles to progress and build consensus Developed functional methods of coordination and collaboration Developed Phase 2 to better target country needs and accelerate GFOI.ORG GFOI1
