CADI Framework: FAO Outputs and Activities Outcome Conservation and management of biodiveristy and ecosystem services of cold winter deserts is strengthened across borders Output I Evidence based knowledge on ecosystem services, biodiversity, conservation status and land-use of cwd is available, applied and disseminated Activity 1.1. Activity 1.2. Adapting FAO s methodological approach of an integrated RSbased inventory (Open Foris, Collect Earth) for dryland pastures and forests in cwd of Central Asia to assess land-uses and degradation for a pilot site in Uzbekisten (tbd) Exemplary valuation of natural resource assets (pastures, woodlands) and ecosystem services (PES) in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan: - two pilot sites each up to 100 sqkm; - mapping of ecosystem services; - quantifying available amount and limits of sustainable usage for PES (Payment for Ecosystem Services) approaches.

CADI Framework: FAO Outputs and Activities Outcome Conservation and management of biodiversity and ecosystem services of cold winter deserts is strengthened across borders Multi-stakeholder-based sustainable land management for desert biomes is Output II introduced in the partner countries Activity II.1. Activity II.4. Activity II.5 Activity II.6 Reviewing framework for INRM based on FAO-developed format (in UZB) and identifying challenges and opportunities Establishment of local project partnerships in selected pilot areas (in UZB), including pastures, with exemplary investments (closely linked to II.5) related but not limited to: (i) fuel efficient stoves; (ii) greenhouses for medicianal/aromatic plants; (iii) plant seeds & seedlings; (iv) fencing material; (v) drying tables (vi) processing equipment; (vii) beekeeping; (viii) access to pastures. Developing project partnerships into exemplary INRM comanagement agreements with alternative income concepts (incl. business plans) as well as exemplary lease-agreements for pilot areas with at least two representatives of local communities (in UZB) Establishing bestpractices and approaches for climate-adapted & biodiversity-friendly INRM in cwd through Farmer Field Schools (FFS) and improvement of water resource management through construction and restoration of wells/watering holes in pilot sites (in UZB)

CADI Framework: FAO Outputs and Activities Outcome Output IV Conservation and management of biodiversity and ecosystem services of cold winter deserts is strengthened across borders Key actors in the region develop a joint vision for conservation and sustainable use of cwd in Central Asia, communicate this vision at national and international level and establish networks Activity 4.1. Activity 4.2. Activity 4.3. Conduct one workshop per country on IPBES (KAZ, UZB, TKM) Regional awareness raising workshop for decision-makers and extension of national political agenda for INRM in deserts (closely linked to activity IV.3) Establishing interim secretariat of the initiative preferably using existing government structures, including: - coordinator position for one year, - moderating dialog between individual focal points of each Rio Convention (UNCBD, UNCCD, UNFCCC), - collecting best practices and lessons learned from the region, - identifying funding opportunities.

CADI Framework: FAO Outputs and Activities Outcome Conservation and management of biodiversity and ecosystem services of cold winter deserts is strengthened across borders Key actors in the region develop a joint vision for conservation and Output IV sustainable use of cwd in Central Asia, communicate this vision at national and international level and establish networks Activity 4.4. Activity 4.5. Activity 4.6. Organizing project specific side Organizing an events at UNCCD COP in 2017, international conference UNCBD COP in 2018 and on cwd in Asia, targeting UNFCCC COP in 2019, there, conservation and adopt CADI strategy (MSF) sustainable use Backstopping the process to establish CADI between partner countries and develop a joint programme of work, including review of current situation and study on sustainable funding options for CADI secretariat

Synergies between Central Asian Desert Initiative (CADI) Conservation and sustainable use of cold winter deserts in Central Asia CACILM II Integrated natural resources management in and drought-prone and salt-affected agricultural production systems in Central Asia and Turkey Focal area Integrated management for sustainable use of natural resources, and conservation/restoration of biodiversity and ecosystem services of the multifunctional and drought-prone landscapes of CA in context of LDN-UNCCD, UNFCCC and UNCBD; Partner countries: CADI : 3 CACs and partners (Iran, China and Mongolia) CACILM II - 5 Central Asia countries and Turkey

Common and cross cutting activities CACILM II Multi-country collaboration and partnership to foster the effective delivery of INRM. Integration of resilience into policy, legal and institutional frameworks for INRM. CADI The joint vision for conservation and sustainable use of cwd in Central Asia and its communication at national and international level, and establish networks. Development of target-specific communication strategy and material for integrated, sustainable natural resource management and nature conservation. Policy and institutions review and assessment. Multi-stakeholder land-use plans and innovative technologies and SLM/WM practices for selected production landscapes per country are promoted. Multicountry platform for consolidation of knowledge and harmonizing of INRM Upscaling of climate-smart agricultural practices in drought prone and/or salt affected production landscapes. Enable conditions and investments to establish and maintain of the protected areas in selected desert biome is promoted in line with IUCN rules and status. Multi-stakeholder-based SLM for desert biomes is introduced. Evidence based knowledge on ecosystem services, biodiversity, conservation status and land-use of cwd is available, applied and disseminated Multi-stakeholder-based sustainable land management for desert biomes is introduced in the partner countries
