1 Second Announcement Course Description The course would cover the work of Dr F Schwarze, Prof. Dr Claus Mattheck, Dr Alan Raynor, Dr Lyn Boddy, Prof. Dr Olaf Schmidt. All the content would be specific to Hong Kong fungi. Objectives: To underst how decay fungi found in Hong Kong cause wood degradation in living trees To underst the different strategies employed by the decay fungi to colonise woody tissues the implications for tree care To have knowledge of the different types of rot caused by the decay fungi be able to recognise white, brown soft rots the implications for the tree To recognise the principal decay fungi found in living trees in Hong Kong To know for each fungi - a typical host tree species, colonisation strategy, type of rot they cause, part of tree attacked the significance for the tree. To have knowledge of the wood-decay processes host fungi interactions as this is essential to providing objectivity in risk assessment involving fungi trees Biography of Presenter: Mr. Dave Dowson Qualifications Fellow of the Arboricultural Association Fellow Chartered Arboriculturist of the Institute of Chartered Foresters Training Development Lead Body qualified assessor verifier holding units 32, Registered Training Services Verifier with LANTRA. (1997-) Moderator/lead examiner for the RFS Certificate (1998-) AA Technicians Certificate in Arboriculture examination. ( ) Examiner for the AA Technicians Certificate ( ) in Arboriculture RFS Diploma in Arboriculture examinations.( ) Assessor for the ICF chartered examinations (2000-) Member of the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA), UK/I Chapter Chief Executive Officer, Certified Arborist past International executive board

2 member. Author of the new AA Tree Officers competence award in Arboriculture. Author principal instructor for the LANTRA Professional Tree Inspection course. Past Chairman of the Association of Lecturers in Arboriculture Professional Experience Dave Dowson is the Director of Tree Life AC Ltd Tree Legal Ltd providing a full range of consultancy services to a range of clients which include Parish Councils Local Authorities (LA), large development companies, solicitors, mortgage lenders, lscape architects, planning consultants Health Safety Executive providing educational consultancy services for bodies such as the Royal Forestry Society, Arboricultural Association, National Arborist Association, International Society of Arboriculture the Awarding Body Consortium. Dave has been a registered expert witness for ten years. His experiences include providing preliminary final reports for the Health Safety Executive, solicitors court room use where neighbour disputes have occurred breaches of Tree Preservation Orders. In the last six years, he has specialised in the area of tree inspection, failure defensible systems of tree inspection recently attended a coroners court related to a death caused by a tree failure. He is currently involved in cases of tree related injuries/deaths nation wide. He has assisted Southampton City Council, the National Trust Burleigh House Estates to design their system of tree risk management based on zoning providing external independent advice. Recently he has externally audited Sheffield City Council s system of tree risk management identifying weaknesses making recommendations to strengthen their procedures. He is a member of the working party compiling a new British Stard on Tree inspection which has now reached the consultation stage. He is the author, principal trainer moderator of the nationally recognised professional tree inspection programme offered by LANTRA, the industry lead body. He has 18 years experience in operating interpretation of the results from the vast majority of the commonly available decay detection equipment has extensive

3 knowledge of the decay patterns in trees enabling him to match the choice of equipment used to the circumstances of the tree. 6 Terms Conditions 1. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. 2. All cheques shall be crossed made payable to the organizer LNS Ltd to confirm registration are subject to bank clearance. 3. There is no refund for cancellation of booking initiated by registrant. However, the registration may be transferred to another person from the same company or organisation at no extra charge by notifying the organiser at least 3 days prior to the commencement of the course. 4. The Organiser reserves the right to cancel the course should there be insufficient cidates or for other reasons. Course fee will then be refunded 100%. 5. All cidates will be informed well in advance should there be any change of course date due to unforeseen circumstances. 6. Applicants will be notified by to confirm successful registrations. An official receipt will be provided on the day of the event. 7. Applicants are expected to attend the course at the place time notified by the organizer. 8.
