1 Alberta Society of Professional Biologists Academic Requirements: University of Alberta Version: October 08, 2014 The Alberta Society of Professional Biologists (ASPB) is the legislated professional organization in Alberta that works with individuals who practice in the field of biology. There are two regulated membership categories: Biologist in Training (BIT) and Professional Biologist (P Biol). In addition, students in academic programs leading to a degree in biology are welcomed as Student Members to the ASPB. To be qualified to become a BIT or P Biol, an individual must have a degree in biology (or equivalent). The purpose of this document is to help students who are interested in becoming members of the ASPB to choose courses that will provide them with the necessary academic qualifications. The ASPB s Registration Committee considers that any Canadian university degree in a biology program, which includes ecology, zoology, botany, microbiology and others, is adequate to meet the academic requirements of a BIT or P Biol. Other degrees, although they are not named biology, may include enough biological content to be accepted. For applicants in this category, the Registration Committee examines the individual s university transcripts to determine if the degree has sufficient biology content to meet requirements. A degree is considered to be equivalent to a biology degree if it includes: 25 science courses, of which 15 have substantial biological content, and 4 of the biological courses are at a senior level (i.e., 3 rd or 4 th year). Any 3-credit course offered by the U of A s Department of Biology meets the biology course requirement, including Bioinformatics, BIOIN Biology, BIOL Botany, BOT Cell Biology, CELL Entomology, ENT Genetics, GENET Immunologie, IMINE Immunology and Infection, IMIN Marine Sciences, MA SC Microbiology, MICRB Paleontology, PALEO Zoology, ZOOL The following course groups are also included in the biology course count: Anatomie, ANATE

2 Anatomy, ANAT Biochemistry, BIOCH Biochimie, BIOCM Augustana Faculty - Biology, AUBIO Biologie, BIOLE Botanique, BOTQ Microbiologie, MICRE In addition, the members of the Registration Committee understand that many courses do not carry the banner of being called a biology course yet may, in fact, have substantial biological content. In reviewing past applications, the decision of the Registration Committee to accept or reject a specific U of A course to count towards an applicant s 15-course biology requirement is noted in the following table. Please note: this is not an exhaustive list of courses offered by the university. Because the content of individual courses may change over time, the Registration Committee may reassess its acceptance of a course in its review of future applications.* Course Number Name Accepted Rejected AGFOR 100 Global Ecosystems AN SC 110 Equine Physiol Nutr AN SC 260 Animal Nutrition AN SC 376 Wildlife Management ANAT 200 Human Morphology ANATE 140 Anatomie ANTHR 101 Introductory Anthropology ANTHR 209 Intro to Physical Anthropology ANTHR 319 Hominid Evolution AREC 214 Appl Lin Mod to Food, Res & Env AREC 323 Intro Mgnt/Agri-food and Environment AREC 365 Natural Resource Economics AUENV 324 Resources and Environ Management AUENV 325 Environ Impact Assessment AUENV 351 Biogeography AUENV 421 Environ.
