2 : Your job is to untangle the mystery of the history of this area. For example, some people say a forest fire burned here over 60 years ago. Is this true? If your team can find evidence to prove what really happened here over the last 200 years, you will earn the Tillamook State Forest Detective Certificate! Good Luck! Directions: In this booklet are a list of dates with events that are reported to have occurred in the nearby area. For each event: Use the maps on pages 3 and 4 to find the location of your clues. Search for the evidence. Stay within sight of your adult assistant. Be careful! Do not destroy or damage any evidence or life forms you may encounter. When you hear the words detective meeting stop what you are doing and return to your adult chaperone. Repeat steps and for each event below. 4 Outside Map Future (*bonus*) Future forest plans call for growing trees to provide for forest products, habitat for many different plants and animals and fish and more recreation for people. Some trees will be cut when they are young and some trees will be left to grow very old. Many natural and human-caused events can change a forest. Question If you come back to this area in ten years, what changes might you see? fire? more trees? new trails? bigger trees? more houses? you decide! 4 13

List different objects that were created from western redcedar trees growing in the forest long ago. 6 (inside) Homesteading was a means of obtaining land when people were migrating to the west to start a new life. There were many chores to do including cutting wood, picking fruit and making butter. The butter churn. Take turns giving it a try. Can you churn butter for 15 seconds? The model train area for answers to the questions. What can you do when you visit the forest to make sure that you do not damage any plants, harm animals or leave any litter behind? 7 Today (wildlife) (inside) Large and small wild animals find food, water and shelter here. Can you find evidence of wild animals? (Clue: some small animals have more than four legs or no legs at all! Large animals leave behind more than footprints!) List what you find in the boxes below.
