1 GWINN FOREST MANAGEMENT UNIT COMPARTMENT REVIEW PRESENTATION COMPARTMENT # 9 ENTRY YEAR: 200 Compartment Acreage: 775 GIS acres County: Marquette Revision Date: 8/2/2008 Stand Examiner: Jerry Mohlman Legal Description: 44N R23W SECTIONS 24,, Management Goals: This area has very diverse forest stands due to the high productivity of the soils. However soils can be very difficult to work on because of the higher silt or clay content. Traditionally these hardwood stands contained hemlock. We will encourage hemlock in hardwood harvests by possibly underplanting or otherwise encouraging natural reproduction. All areas proposed for harvest are hardwood selection harvests. There is one small stand that has never been thinned but the rest proposed for this entry period have been thinned at least once. We will retain all species represented and all size classes including all large legacy trees. We will retain at least two den trees per acre if present. All existing cedar, hemlock, white pine and red pine will be retained. We will retain at least 50% of existing cherry, w. spruce, yellow birch in these stands. All stands along Deer creek and N. Branch Deer Creek are put into riparian management protection. Soils and topography: Level to rolling uplands bisected with low drainages and swamps. Cathro-Ensley complex, Shoepac-Ensley complex, Charlevoix-Ensley complex, Trenary silt-loam, Charlevoix silt-loam, Shoepac-Trenary silt loam, Cathro-Ensley mucks, Chippeny-Nahma mucks Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: Mostly a large block of state land with a few residences or hunting camps along the county road at the north side of the compartment and a couple hunting camps south. Unique, Natural Features: The Boiling Springs are in this compartment, an area of numerous large, high-output springs along the N. Branch Deer Creek. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: Special Management Designations or Considerations: Special riparian management stands:3,4,5,6,20,2,26,27,28,29,30,32,33,34,46,38,39,4,52,40 Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Deer Creek and the N. Branch of Deer Creek are in this compartment. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Maintain and protect riparian Special Conservation Area stands as movement corridors and core habitat for a multitude of game and nongame wildlife species/communities. Promote habitat legacies in all Special Conservation Area stands. Maintain or enhance biodiversity in northern hardwood stands through conservation/sustainment of all associated overstory and understory species, with a particular focus on providing mesic conifer species in all forest strata

2 Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions: Compartment 9 Sections 24, &, T44N-R23W, Marquette County Surface sediments consist of medium-textured glacial till. There is insufficient data to determine the glacial drift thickness. The Ordovician Trenton Group subcrops below the glacial drift. This formation is quarried in the UP for dolostone. A gravel pit is located in section 20 and potential appears to be good on uplands. Abandoned iron mines are located twelve miles to the northwest. This compartment has not been previously leased for metallic exploration. There is no economic oil and gas production in the UP. Vehicle Access: Generally good from either county road 444 or the Deadhorse road south of Deer creek. The roads are sometimes in poor condition due to the water holding capacity of the soils. Survey Needs: We would like the SWSW corner of and the west 6 th corner along the south line of established. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: This area is a popular hunting area and other traditional outdoor activities. Fire Protection: Fire frequency is low in this compartment. Additional Compartment Information: The following 5 reports from the Operations Inventory System (OIPC) are attached: Cover Type by Age Class Cover Type by Management Objective Compartment Volume Summary Proposed Treatments No Limiting Factors Proposed Treatments With Limiting Factors The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand numbers, cover types Proposed treatments Proposed road access system Suggested potential old growth

Underplant mesic conifers in spring following completion of overstory treatment northern hardwood unevenaged selection 2 planting comnts Fmd : Wld : This stand is poor timber quality. Some aspen but not throughout. Recommend small clearcuts where aspen occurs and mark the rest with sale combined with large hardwood south. Many large den trees here with upland cedar and hemlock. Some low areas. BA low in most of stand, but should be treated this entry to renew aspen and remove some red maple clumps. Leave at least 50% of the cherry, y.birch and spruce. Retain some scattered mature aspen. Leave cedar, hemlock, and white pine. Underplant mesic conifers in spring following completion of overstory treatment northern hardwood unevenaged selection 2 planting stand with fdf potential comnts Fmd : Thinned 984. Good quality most areas. Good regeneration in some spots. Mix of red maple and sugar maple stand due to changes in elevation. Ready to thin again but some areas would be light as BA is still low in some areas. On a finger southeast is some young aspen from a cut 30 years ago mixed with hardwood. Conifer was removed there in the hardwood. Possible to manage for aspen or hardwood in that area. That area is only a few acres. Leave at least 50% of the cherry. Y.birch and spruce. 11 EDEPARTMENT OF NATURAL R Report Date: 08/5/2008 Type Mgt. Unit Compartment: 009 DNR DEDICATED CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS Page of * This is a list of Dedicated Biodiversity Areas for this compartment along with a /4 mile buffer surrounding the compartment. Refer to Dedicated Conservation Area Map for areas that the below listed Conservation Areas are located. Conservation Area Description Gwinn MICHIGAN ERA = Ecological Reference Area HCVA = High Conservation Value Area SCA = Special Conservation Area SOURCES SCA Archaeological Site An aquatic or terrestrial area of the State that contains physical remains of human occupation. These are sites of cultural and historical significance that may occur upon terrestrial areas and Great Lakes bottomlands. They include thousands of Native American settlements and burial sites, as well as French and British outposts, nineteenth century logging camps, mines and homesteads. Beneath the waters of the Great Lakes, there are shipwrecks and other remains documenting the maritime trade. Such sites may be identified by Natural heritage data from the State Historic Preservation Office. Proposed treatments in this compartment will be implemented in such a manner as to maintain the integrity of these sites. Due to the sensitive nature of this information, no further detail about location is available. SCA Cold Water Stream A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 20. SCA Potential Old Growth Areas This category contains stands were identified for a broad range of reasons and were coded in the OI database as stand condition 8 as potential old growth (POG). Approximately 30,000 acres have been identified through the Operations Inventory (OI)/Compartment Review process. For stands in Year of Entry 2008 and forward, potential old growth is managed for the identified objective until it is: ) vetted through the Biodiversity Conservation Planning Process (BCPP) and given a specific designation and objective (as an ERA, HCVA, or other type of SCA) and is released from the potential old growth designation; or 2) it is released from the potential old growth designation via the Compartment Review process.
