3 Milestone of Agricultural Engineering Farming without a plough During the 30-year-old company tradition HORSCH like no other manufacturer contributed to the breakthrough of tillage without a plough. In 2013, these efforts were awarded with the Milestone of Agricultural Engineering award. A lot of products, e.g. the Terrano, Tiger and Joker models and last but not least the universal seed drill Pronto DC, allow for farming without a plough on the highest level. For wheat it amounts to even 60 per cent. 20 years ago no-one dared to believe that. HORSCH played an important part in getting this far. With this background other milestones in agricultural engineering will be developed.

5 8 Convincing performance Simpler, safer, faster. What is so special about a Horsch machine? It always meets the criteria faster, simpler, safer. The operation of a machine has to be simpler compared to another machine. It has to work safely and do a quality job as our cultivators do and guarantee a good germination as with our seed drills. Last but not least, the work the farmer wants to carry out with the machine has to be done faster than before. Only if a machine fulfills all these criteria and, moreover, is innovative and of uncompromising quality, Horsch decides to build this machine. The structural changing in agriculture advances quickly and also presents the sector of agricultural machinery with new tasks. Optimising the methods of tillage, sowing and plant protection as well as reducing costs and working more efficiently these are the requirements, while at the same time increasing yields and improving the quality of the harvested crops. 7 12 Research for the future The Agritechnica Innovation Medals of the DLG are the most important awards worldwide for trendsetting innovations in agricultural engineering. In 2013, Horsch gets two silver medals for its innovations. Horsch is the first manufacturer of agricultural machinery to present a solution how to single cereals at a high operational speed. The new metering technology is used with Horsch seed drills that are equipped with TurboDisc coulters for sowing like a Pronto DC or a Focus TD. The seed is supplied from a central hopper by means of a central volume metering unit. This pre-metered seed is pneumatically conveyed and transported to the respective seed row. As far as the coulter the seed supply is carried out in a completely conventional way without any modifications at the standard seed drill. Only a new TurboDisc coulter body including a mounted metering unit is necessary for singling and placing in the soil. This coulter body has been designed to achieve high singling accuracy. This is important to keep up the output of the present seed drills with an operational speed of 10 to 12 km/h. The new single grain metering unit is able to meter cereals in single grain quality up to a frequency of 120 Hz. 120 Hz corresponds to 120 grains/sec. and thus to a seed quantity of 240 grains/m2 at a speed of 12 km/h with a row spacing of 15 cm. The patented singling system in practice allows for COV values from 30 to 50 % and thus comes close to the traditional single grain seed drills.

As the boom has been separated from the chassis, an exact adaption of the boom to the field contour is possible for the first time.

This, too, was awarded with an Agritechnica silver medal. This kind of active BoomControl is unique and patented and the essential basis of an application with a low distance to the target area. As the boom has been separated from the chassis, an exact adaption of the boom to the field contour is possible for the first time. Due to this decoupling the rolling motions of the carrier vehicle are not transmitted to the boom. The adjustment speed of the contour adaption is very high even in most difficult conditions. This is the reason why an application with fine droplets and a low risk of drift has become possible. Disturbing influences like wind and thermal, thus, can be minimised. Operational speeds of 30 km/h in the field with a distance to the target area of 30 m are no problem for the new BoomControl system even in extremely hilly areas and in difficult conditions.

The disc harrow is available as Joker CT for three-point attachment and as Joker RT with its own chassis in larger working widths. High hectares output is possible due to high working speeds up to 20 km/h. A 1-bar deep loosener Mono TG is available as an additional option for the Joker 3 CT. It is particularly suitable for the use on heavy sites where the soil has to be loosened deeply and the harvest residues, however, only have to be mixed in in a shallow way. With a maximum working depth of 15 cm it is ideal for perfect stubble cultivation with optimum straw distribution after combine harvesting, for seedbed preparation, as a fine cultivator for mechanical weed control and for loosening and venting the soils in spring. Its FlexGrip tine with a release force of 100 kg controls the depth of the coulter and absorbs lateral forces. The Cruiser XL is available as a 3-point machine with 5 and 6 metre. Individual levellers to steady the earth current are attached in front of the RollFlex packer (with new spring elements and reinforced design) of the 3-point Cruiser. 16 30 Terrano FX Effective cultivation technology with a wide range of uses The HORSCH Terrano FX is a compact 3-row cultivator with an enormous range of use for shallow stubble cultivation as well as for intensive soil mixing. The allrounder Terrano FX mixes soil perfectly in all depths between 5 am 30 cm. Due to a frame height of 85 cm and a tine spacing of 30 cm it mixes all residues evenly even on the heavy soils. Already in 2003, the DLG Fokus test confirmed the low horsepower requirement of the Terrano FX. The diesel consumption for best working quality is 20 % lower compared to the average consumption of all competitors that have been tested. 34 Terrano FM Heavy universal cultivator Terrano MT Shallow mixing deep loosening The Terrano FM can be used for shallow as well as for deep cultivation.

It has a high clearance to allow for clogging-free working even if there are large quantities of harvest residues.

The middle chassis of the Terrano FM allows for tight turning on the headlands and for an excellent roadability.

The latter guarantees a very good and even consolidation even under most difficult conditions (e. g. many stones) due to new spring elements and a reinforced design.

18 34 Terrano FM Heavy universal cultivator Terrano MT Shallow mixing deep loosening The Terrano FM can be used for shallow as well as for deep cultivation. Due to its 4-bar design it mixes intensively, whereas the power demand remains low due to a tine spacing of 28 cm. It has a high clearance to allow for clogging-free working even if there are large quantities of harvest residues. It is equipped with TerraGrip tines of the second generation they are maintenance-free and stand for exact coulter control due to high release forces of 570 kg for the Terrano FM. The middle chassis of the Terrano FM allows for tight turning on the headlands and for an excellent roadability. Under for example wet conditions the chassis can be used additionally for depth control. The following packers are available: RollFlex, FarmFlex and SteelDisc packer or the new double RollFlex packer. The latter guarantees a very good and even consolidation even under most difficult conditions (e. g. many stones) due to new spring elements and a reinforced design. The Terrano MT has been specially designed for the following range of use: mixing on the top, loosening at the bottom. The cultivator disposes of a middle chassis and a 4-bar design. A disc harrow is situated in first two rows followed by two rows of TerraGrip tines with narrow LD (low disturbance) coulters. The Terrano MT is particularly suitable for cultivating heavy soils that have to be loosened deeply, but where harvest residues can only be mixed in in a shallow way to prevent rough soil from being transported to the surface. The 2-row DiscSystem allows for a shallow and intensively mixing cultivation and a clogging-free working even if there are difficult residues and high quantities of straw. The DiscSystem is followed by a 2-bar tine system. The power demand for this system is low. It allows for an intensive loosening down to a depth of 30 cm and it runs below the disc harrow horizon. The packer that is used is a Horsch SteelDisc packer with a diametre of 58 cm and a weight of 175 kg/m working width for maximum consolidation. 45 88 Leeb GS Trailed professional sprayers The trailed professional sprayer Leeb GS is now available with a tank capacity ranging from 6,000, 7,000 to 8,000 litres. Moreover, the sprayer has been completed with new intelligent and userfriendly features. The one-axle sprayer has a very compact design, is extremely manoeuvrable and is equipped with air suspension. As usual HORSCH does not compromise with regard to the tank. Like for all Leeb machines the tanks of the whole GS range are made of stainless steel, thus allowing for easy cleaning and residue-free inside walls. The pump and the distribution system have been arranged in such a way that the hose lengths are reduced to a minimum and thus, there is only a very small amount of residual liquids. The induction hopper has been optimised even further to guarantee a safe and quick jetting of compounds. In the suction area of the Leeb GS there is a large three-inch pipework to allow for a quick filling. The spraying pump is a three-inch rotary pump with a maximum output of 1000 l/min which is widely maintenance-free. The patented boom suspension is a parallelogram. It is hydraulically spring-loaded and damped and thus guarantees a soft and smooth boom position. Available as an option, the electronic control system BoomControl guarantees an exact control of the boom. Thus the boom can be kept very close to the target area even at high speeds and on hilly sites. The hydraulically proportional control allows for smooth movements which guide the boom sleeplessly depending on the deviation. The middle part of the boom and the outer wings are controled independently. The boom itself is available in nine different configurations and widths. Due to the pneumatic individual nozzle control the spraying line can be equipped with a large variety of nozzle body combinations ranging from single nozzle bodies with a horizontal spacing of 50 cm via double nozzle bodies with a horizontal spacing of 25 cm to a quadruple nozzle body with intermediate nozzles. With an optional nozzle spacing of 25 cm the distance to the target area and the drift can be reduced to a minimum. The pneumatic nozzle control allows for individual, intelligent application technology for an excellent wetting and penetration of the crop. After having finished spraying the inside cleaning system CCS (Continuous Cleaning System) (standard equipment) allows for a safe and quick cleaning of the sprayer. First of all the line system can be discharged by blowing it out with compressed air. An additional piston diaphragm pump pumps clean water into the tank via rotation nozzles. Due to the continuous flushing of the container with clean water while the spraying pump constantly sucks and takes out the flushing water the cleaning of the tank and the spraying lines is very efficient and time-saving. The cleaning can be operated completely and comfortably from the tractor cabin. It has inherited the genes of the first Horsch auger waggons and raises them to a completely new technical level. Due to the large hopper capacity of 34 m³ idle times on the field boundaries and awkward manoeuvring are part of the past. The hopper capacity of the UW corresponds to one truckload. A truck is thus filled at one go. The output of the newly designed hydraulically foldable auger conveyor (ø 600 mm) is 18 tons per minute. Thus, 34 m³ are reloaded in only 90 seconds. The Titan 34 UW has a telescopic axle as standard equipment. It moves every tyre to the outside by 30 cm. This increases the width of the machine from 3,00 to 3,56 m. Thus, stability is increased and soil pressure reduced as the tyres of the auger waggon do not run in the tractor tracks. Another soil-saving means are the large-dimensioned tyres (900/60 R32).
